Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the United States Army Air Corps was led by a cadre of officers who believed implicitly that military aviation, particularly fast heavy bombers at high altitude, would be able to destroy strategic enemy targets during daylight with minimal losses. However, by 1942 the Flying Fortress was proving vulnerable to Luftwaffe fighters. This title charts the United States Army Air Force's struggle to develop a Long-Range Escort which would enable them to achieve the Combined Bomber Objectives and gain mastery of the skies over the Third Reich. The commitment of the USAAF to the Mediterranean and European theatres saw an increasingly desperate need to find a fighter escort, which reached crisis point in 1943 as losses suffered in the Tidal Wave offensive and Schweinfurt-Regensburg-Munster raids emphasised the mounting strength of the Luftwaffe. The USAAF leaders increasingly accepted the probability of bomber losses, and the deployment of the P-51B Mustang solved the problem of Germany's layered defence strategy, as Luftwaffe fighters had been avoiding the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightening escort fighters by concentrating their attacks beyond the range of the Thunderbolt and Lightning. The P-51B duly emerged as the 'The Bastard Stepchild' that the USAAF Material Division did not want, becoming the key Long-Range Escort fighter, alongside the P-38 and P-47, that defeated the Luftwaffe prior to D-Day. As well as the P-51B's history, this title explores the technical improvements made to each of these fighters, as well as the operational leadership and technical development of the Luftwaffe they fought against.

Book Synopsis Aerodynamic Loads on a Leading-edge Flap and a Leading-edge Slat on the NACA 64A010 Airfoil Section by : John A. Kelly
Download or read book Aerodynamic Loads on a Leading-edge Flap and a Leading-edge Slat on the NACA 64A010 Airfoil Section written by John A. Kelly and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A previous report, NACA TN 3007, gave force and moment data for the NACA 64A010 airfoil section equipped alternately with a flap and a slat at the leading edge, and with a split flap and a double-slotted flap at the trailing edge. The present report presents the chordwise distributions of pressure measured concurrently with the force and moment data of NACA 3007. The pressure data for the leading-edge flap and slat have been converted into coefficients of normal force, chord force, and moment based on the geometry of the leading-edge device.

This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Modelling and Simulation of Aircraft and the Environment An in-depth discussion of aircraft dynamics modelling and simulation This book provides a comprehensive guide to modelling and simulation from basic physical and mathematical principles, giving the reader sufficient information to be able to build computational models of aircraft for the purposes of simulation and evaluation. Highly relevant to practitioners, it takes into account the multi-disciplinary nature of aerospace products and the integrated nature of the models needed in order to represent them. Volume 1- Platform Kinematics and Synthetic Environment focused on the modelling of a synthetic environment in which aircraft operate and its spatial relationship with vehicles that are situated and moving within it. This volume focuses on the modelling of aircraft and the interpretation of their flight dynamics. Key features: Includes chapters on equations of motion, fixed-wing aerodynamics, longitudinal flight and gas turbines, as well as an opening chapter that presents an overview of flight modelling and a concluding chapter that presents a number of additional topics such as aircraft structures and embedded systems. Serves as both a student text and practitioner reference. Follows on from previous Aerospace Series titles, offering a complementary view of vehicles and systems from the perspectives of mathematics, physics and simulation. This book offers a comprehensive guide for senior, graduate and postgraduate students of aerospace engineering as well as professional engineers involved in the modelling and simulation of aircraft.
