Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Succinct History of the Sabbath Day: Carefully Compiled From the Old and New Testaments The differences of opinion which prevail on the subject of the Sabbath day, as well in the church as out of it, preclude the necessity of an apology for attempting to deduce from the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, which are held and admitted by the writer as the divinely inspired word of God, a succinct, and as far as possible a correct, history of that institution. It is true that almost the entire Christian world fully recognizes a sacred character of that day, and a very solemn duty to observe it. Nevertheless, it is quite remarkable how far individual proclivities, necessities and interests modify individual consciences. In tact, after a general acknowledgment of certain great duties of the day, each man's conscience becomes a law to himself, and instances are very rare where you can find two pious minds fully agreed upon the details of Sabbath duties. The religious views which we entertain, however we may flatter ourselves that we think for ourselves, are often, unconsciously, the mere adoption of the opinions of others, without the process of ratiocination on our own part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Succinct History of the Sabbath Day: Carefully Compiled From the Old and New Testaments HE world, even the Christian world, is divided in their views on the question, Whether God made the heavens and the earth and 'all that in them is, in the short Space of six days, as we now count time, or whether that great work occupied six periods of time, which might represent millions, or billions, or trillions of our years. Happily this question does not disturb our investigation, as our problem will work as well under one hypothesis as the other. It is a necessary preliminary, however, to refer to the week of creation, as whatever the length of days might have been, it is generally conceded that the, week of creation is the type of our week of seven days. Download or read book A Brief History of Sunday written by Gonzalez, Justo L. and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this accessible historical overview of Sunday, noted scholar Justo Gonz lez tells the story of how and why Christians have worshiped on Sunday from the earliest days of the church to the present. After discussing the views and practices relating to Sunday in the ancient church, Gonz lez turns to Constantine and how his policies affected Sunday observances. He then recounts the long process, beginning in the Middle Ages and culminating with Puritanism, whereby Christians came to think of and strictly observe Sunday as the Sabbath. Finally, Gonz lez looks at the current state of things, exploring especially how the explosive growth of the church in the Majority World has affected the observance of Sunday worldwide. Readers of this book will rediscover the joy and excitement of Sunday as early Christians celebrated it and will find fresh, inspiring perspectives on Sunday amid our current culture of indifference and even hostility to Christianity.

Download or read book The Sabbath written by R. Curtis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath: A Concise Bible History of the Israelitish or Jewish Sabbaths The prevalent diversity of opinions, respecting the Sabbath and its observance, suggested the following work, which is offered to the public, with the hope of harmonizing all the conflicting Sabbath views, on the basis of the Scriptures. Within the last quarter of a century, a new church organization arose attracting much attention by their earnest advocacy of the seventh day of the week, as the proper and only day to be observed as the Sabbath day, "holy to our Lord." Very soon they asked and obtained legislative authority to work and carry on their occupations on the first day of the week, which had been, time out of mind, held to be the Christian Sabbath by nearly every Christian people in this and other countries. The Seventh-day Sabbath views, were opposed by various arguments, setting forth, that the Sabbath was changed from the seventh day, to the first day. Unfortunately, however, for the truth, both contending parties were agreed in maintaining the error that originated the misunderstanding. Each party claiming the seventh day of creation as the origin of the Sabbath, with four thousand years of unabated obligation upon all mankind, made the institution of universal application. Upon this unauthorized assumption of origin, its long standing would indicate that the Seventh day was of perpetual obligation; giving to the Seventh day view, the greater weight of argument.
