Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the three different levels of reading achievement on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills and the mathematics achievement of middle school students in a large urban school district in southwestern United States as assessed by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. A correlational research design was used to study this relationship. The participants were current high school students who were administered both the Reading and Mathematics sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in their sixth, seventh, and eighth grade year in middle school (N = 652). A bivariate analysis using the Pearson product-moment correlation technique was used to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the three different levels of reading achievement and mathematics achievement as measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. Students who achieved a Commended performance and a Met Standard performance in the Reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, all yielded a correlation coefficient that was statistically significant with a p-value .01. This also held true for the overall relationship in sixth (r = + .481 and N =652), seventh (r = + .537 and N = 652), and eighth (r = + .385 and N = 652) grade. These results suggest that there is a moderate to strong relationship between the reading achievement and mathematics achievement of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who achieved a Commended or Met Standard performance on the reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. The seventh grade students who achieved a Did Not Meet Standard in the Reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, N = 53, yielded a correlation coefficient, r = + .325, which was statistically significant with a p-value

The authors describe some of the challenges and offer ways to tackle them, such as reassessing the organization of grades K-12; specifically assisting the students most in need; finding ways to prevent disciplinary problems; and helping parents understand how they can help their children learn at home.

Book excerpt: For more than two decades, the concept of student engagement has grown from simple attention in class to a construct comprised of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components that embody and further develop motivation for learning. Similarly, the goals of student engagement have evolved from dropout prevention to improved outcomes for lifelong learning. This robust expansion has led to numerous lines of research across disciplines and are brought together clearly and comprehensively in the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement. The Handbook guides readers through the field’s rich history, sorts out its component constructs, and identifies knowledge gaps to be filled by future research. Grounding data in real-world learning situations, contributors analyze indicators and facilitators of student engagement, link engagement to motivation, and gauge the impact of family, peers, and teachers on engagement in elementary and secondary grades. Findings on the effectiveness of classroom interventions are discussed in detail. And because assessing engagement is still a relatively new endeavor, chapters on measurement methods and issues round out this important resource. Topical areas addressed in the Handbook include: Engagement across developmental stages. Self-efficacy in the engaged learner. Parental and social influences on engagement and achievement motivation. The engaging nature of teaching for competency development. The relationship between engagement and high-risk behavior in adolescents. Comparing methods for measuring student engagement. An essential guide to the expanding knowledge base, the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement serves as a valuable resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in such varied fields as clinical child and school psychology, educational psychology, public health, teaching and teacher education, social work, and educational policy.

Book excerpt: Since 1969, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has been providing policymakers, educators, and the public with reports on academic performance and progress of the nation's students. The assessment is given periodically in a variety of subjects: mathematics, reading, writing, science, the arts, civics, economics, geography, U.S. history, and technology and engineering literacy. NAEP is given to representative samples of students across the U.S. to assess the educational progress of the nation as a whole. Since 1992, NAEP results have been reported in relation to three achievement levels: basic, proficient, and advanced. However, the use of achievement levels has provoked controversy and disagreement, and evaluators have identified numerous concerns. This publication evaluates the NAEP student achievement levels in reading and mathematics in grades 4, 8, and 12 to determine whether the achievement levels are reasonable, reliable, valid, and informative to the public, and recommends ways that the setting and use of achievement levels can be improved.

Book excerpt: This book is an authoritative examination of summer learning loss, featuring original contributions by scholars and practitioners at the forefront of the movement to understand—and stem—the “summer slide.” The contributors provide an up-to-date account of what research has to say about summer learning loss, the conditions in low-income children’s homes and communities that impede learning over the summer months, and best practices in summer programming with lessons on how to strengthen program evaluations. The authors also show how information on program costs can be combined with student outcome data to inform future planning and establish program cost-effectiveness. This book will help policymakers, school administrators, and teachers in their efforts to close academic achievement gaps and improve outcomes for all students. Book Features: Empirical research on summer learning loss and efforts to counteract it. Original contributions by leading authorities. Practical guidance on best practices for implementing and evaluating strong summer programs. Recommendations for using program evaluations more effectively to inform policy.
