This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is relevant to the practice and theory of agricultural extension. In the current context of significant changes in thinking, policy, and expectations, these changes require extension agents to respond to challenges in developing leadership skills to support and encourage changes at farm and household levels. The book has identified the background, personal, and environmental factors influencing achievement motivation in the leadership role of extension agents. The background factors are primary dimensions of diversity and are less amenable to change, exert significant impacts, and shape our basic self-image, sense of identity, and early learning experiences. Researchers often ignore the interdependence of the background factors with other (secondary) dimensions of diversity, in which the latter are changeable personal characteristics that are acquired, and may be modified or abandoned throughout life. Although the secondary dimensions of diversity are more controllable, they will be affected by other people’s decisions, which in this book we see as environmental factors. The reliability and applicability of the above-mentioned theoretical discussions have been tested in an original study involving extension agents in Iran.

Book excerpt: Education is the process of developing the capacities and potentials of the individual so as to prepare that individual to be successful in a specific society or culture. From this perspective, education is serving primarily as an individual development function. Education begins at birth and continues throughout life. It is constant and on going. Schooling generally begins some where between the ages four and six when children are gathered together for the purposes of specific guidance related to skills and competencies that society deems important. In the past, once the formal primary and secondary schooling was completed the process was finished. However, in today’s information age, adults are quite often learning in informal setting throughout their working lives and even into retirement.

The theoretical framework used as a basis for this study was McClelland's Acquired Needs Theory, that humans are motivated by their need for achievement, power and/or affiliation. The CAFNR Freshmen Questionnaire was distributed via email to current freshmen students in CAFNR who indicated membership in FFA on their scholarship application (N = 127). A total of 53 (48.86%) completed the instrument. Overall, students reported achievement, power and affiliation as motivational factors. Results indicated that the motivational factors of achievement, power, and affiliation vary little in terms of home setting and courses taken in high school Female students displayed a higher need for power, than their male counterparts.

Book Synopsis Factors Contributing to Students' Graduation in Agricultural Education in a 4-Year University Through the Lens of Social Cognitive Career Theory by : Chadwick W. McKay

McKay and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the factors that statistically predict student's degree attainment within agricultural education as a course of study. The study is based on a population of first year agriculture students (n = 616) at a private four-year college in Southwestern Ohio. The study is correlational design, which employed cross-sectional archival survey methodology. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to inform the research questions through the lens of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT: Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994). The research questions were designed to measure the extent to which six learning factors predict students' degree attainment in degree programs in agricultural education; the six predictors included: 1) coming from a different a high school setting (rural vs. urban), 2) belonging to the National FFA Organization (FFA), 3) holding an FFA officer position while in high school, 4) having or not having a farm background, 5) parental occupation, and 6) expressed interest in teaching vocational agriculture. Results revealed that four of the six factors did have a significant association with students' degree attainment in a specific a degree program in agricultural education. Specifically, coming from urban school settings, holding an officer position while in FFA, parental occupation related to agriculture, and having an expressed interest in teaching vocational agriculture served as significant predictors that contributed to students' degree attainment of a bachelor's degree in agricultural education. With the current trend that the number of agricultural education teaching positions is on the rise, there is a demand for agricultural education teachers but a lack of individuals to fill the open positions. Accordingly, from a practical standpoint, the findings inform the way in which the case study institution's agricultural department designs and implements recruiting strategies that encourage more high school students to pursue a bachelor's degree in agricultural education. Given the study's data that shows only seven percent of the students graduated with a degree in agricultural education, a follow-up study may need to investigate how such student hands-on learning experiences as teaching reactions contribute to their degree attainment. This future study would allow researchers to inform academic professionals' insights as to how the number of graduates in their program could potentially look after that learning experience.
