Book excerpt: The oil and gas industry relies on multiphase flow models and correlations to predict the behavior of fluids through wells and pipelines. Significant amount of research has been performed on the multiphase flow of different types of liquids with gases to extend the applicability of existing models to field-specific fluid conditions. Heavy oil and gas flow research commenced in the past decade and new correlations have been developed that define their flow behavior/regimes. This study aims to plant a foot in the quite deficient area of multiphase flow research that focuses on a sufficiently common situation faced by many heavy oil producing fields: the presence of sand in wells and pipelines. This study will be the first recorded attempt to understand the multiphase flow of heavy oil, gas, and sand. A 1.5" diameter multiphase flow loop facility capable of handling solids was designed and constructed for the study. Data logging instruments were calibrated and installed to be able to withstand the erosive effects of sand. The flow loop was leak and pressure tested with water and air. Three oils of 150, 196 and 218 cP viscosities were utilized to gather 49 single phase liquid, 227 two-phase liquid- air and 87 three-phase liquid, air and solid multiphase flow data points which included differential and absolute pressures, fluid flow rates, temperatures, liquid and composite liquid- solid hold- up data and photo and videotaping of the observed flow regimes. Validation of the setup was performed using single phase flow of oil and two-phase flow of oil and air. Sand was added in three different concentrations to the 218 cP oil and three-phase oil, gas and sand multiphase flow tests were performed. Flow patterns were identified and flow pattern maps were created using acquired data. No change was observed on flow pattern transitions by changing oil viscosities. Liquid hold- up and differential pressures were compared to observe the effect of changing oil viscosity and the presence of sand in varying concentrations on the two-phase flow of oil and gas and the three-phase flow of oil, gas and sand respectively. An increase in differential pressures was observed with increasing viscosities and the addition of sand. No changes in hold-up were seen with changing oil viscosities rather flow patterns impacted liquid hold-up significantly. The slug flow pattern was analyzed. Composite liquid-solid hold-up in slug flow were physically measured and predicted. Liquid slug lengths were predicted and compared with observed lengths using photo and videography techniques. Differential pressures and liquid hold-up were compared with existing multiphase flow models in the PIPESIM multiphase flow simulator to test model predictions against observed flow data. The dependence of differential pressure gradients and liquid hold-up on dimensionless variables was realized by performing normalized linear regressions to identify the most significant dimensionless groups and the results were given a mathematical form by proposing correlations for differential pressure and hold-up predictions. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt at systematically measuring pressure drop and liquid hold up during the three-phase flow of oil, gas and sand.

Book excerpt: This book provides design engineers using gas-liquid two-phase flow in different industrial applications the necessary fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow variables. Two-phase flow literature reports a plethora of correlations for determination of flow patterns, void fraction, two- phase pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer correlations. However, the validity of a majority of these correlations is restricted over a narrow range of two -phase flow conditions. Consequently, it is quite a challenging task for the end user to select an appropriate correlation/model for the type of two-phase flow under consideration. Selection of a correct correlation also requires some fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow physics and the underlying principles/assumptions/limitations associated with these correlations. Thus, it is of significant interest for a design engineer to have knowledge of the flow patterns and their transitions and their influence on two-phase flow variables. To address some of these issues and facilitate selection of appropriate two-phase flow models, this volume presents a succinct review of the flow patterns, void fraction, pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer phenomenon and recommend some of the well scrutinized modeling techniques.

Book excerpt: Two-fluid dynamics is a challenging subject rich in physics and prac tical applications. Many of the most interesting problems are tied to the loss of stability which is realized in preferential positioning and shaping of the interface, so that interfacial stability is a major player in this drama. Typically, solutions of equations governing the dynamics of two fluids are not uniquely determined by the boundary data and different configurations of flow are compatible with the same data. This is one reason why stability studies are important; we need to know which of the possible solutions are stable to predict what might be observed. When we started our studies in the early 1980's, it was not at all evident that stability theory could actu ally work in the hostile environment of pervasive nonuniqueness. We were pleasantly surprised, even astounded, by the extent to which it does work. There are many simple solutions, called basic flows, which are never stable, but we may always compute growth rates and determine the wavelength and frequency of the unstable mode which grows the fastest. This proce dure appears to work well even in deeply nonlinear regimes where linear theory is not strictly valid, just as Lord Rayleigh showed long ago in his calculation of the size of drops resulting from capillary-induced pinch-off of an inviscid jet.

Volume 141 first summarizes the literature on social cognition and its neural correlates in children and adults with ADHD, focusing on emotion recognition, theory of mind, empathy, moral cognition and social decision-making.Following this, the authors explore the environmental/chemical-associated peripheral blood gene expression profiling of autism spectrum disorder, providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms of environmental chemicals on autism spectrum disorder.A quantitative study is conducted to provide empirical evidence of the relationship between altruistic leader behavior and innovation success, using radical innovation as an explanatory variable. In addition, this compilation aims to validate a scale designed to measure authentic moral pride for children aged 10-16. Participants also completed an adaptation of the Empathy Index for Children and Adolescents. The authors go on to analyze three-year productivity data (2014-2016) from clinical psychologists assigned to U.S. Army behavioral health clinics to examine patient care productivity standards. A simple computational model compares standards from the Department of the Army, the Veterans Health Administration, and the Defense Health Agency. The influence of psychosocial and clinical factors, as well as insight, on attitude and adherence to medication in patients with psychosis is explored through a clinical case study. The services available for support and employment opportunities for individuals with serious mental illness are reviewed. Serious mental illness is defined as a diagnosable mental health disorder that "leads to serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities".The closing study examines the main characteristics of a male Italian child molester, aged 50 years old, through a semi-structured interview based on the central child molester theories and possible intervention strategies

Book excerpt: Annular Two-Phase Flow presents the wide range of industrial applications of annular two-phase flow regimes. This book discusses the fluid dynamics and heat transfer aspects of the flow pattern. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the classification of the various types of interface distribution observed in practice. This text then examines the various regimes of two-phase flow with emphasis on the regions of occurrence of the annular flow regime. Other chapters consider the single momentum and energy balances, which illustrate the differences and analogies between single- and two-phase flows. This book discusses as well the simple modes for annular flow with consideration to the calculation of the profile of shear stress in the liquid film. The final chapter deals with the techniques that are developed for the measurement of flow pattern, entrainment, and film thickness. This book is a valuable resource for chemical engineers.
