Book excerpt: This qualitative study investigated urban middle school teachers' reports regarding the relationship between character education and student leadership practices of being honest, forward-looking, being inspiring, and being competent. This study utilized a conceptual framework derived from Kouzes' and Posner's (2002, 2008) extensive research, which uncovered the top four character practices expected of leaders. These practices are: honesty, forward-looking, being inspiring, and being competent. These practices are also embedded in urban middle school character education curriculum. The study's participants were twelve certified middle school teachers drawn from eight urban schools, located in a district in Northeastern United States. Each participant had taught in the school district for over one year. Individual interviews were done with participants to solicit reports regarding the aforementioned students. leadership practices. Data ascertained from urban middle school teachers' reports revealed that the sociocultural context of the school and surrounding community, students' motivation to succeed academically and socially, and teachers' beliefs regarding their instructional and social interactions with students were related to character education and the development of students' leadership practices. Recommendations for practice were designed to help urban middle school administrators and teachers in developing urban middles school students' leadership practices. Urban middle school teachers should receive on-going professional development or in-service training in character education and student leadership practices. A qualitative interview study with middle school administrators should be conducted to determine the amount of emphasis placed on character education. Teachers play a significant role in imparting character education instruction to students. Their reports, therefore, are paramount to assessing character education in their respective schools. The findings from this study are relevant to urban middle school administrators and teachers, in their quest to develop student leaders.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study is to address the gap between the available wealth of resources and the dearth of character education currently in practice at the high school level by investigating if secondary teachers' knowledge of character education information, their beliefs toward character education preparation and their perceived role as an educator relates to their use of character education practices on the school campus and in their own classrooms. The participants consisted of 103 secondary teachers employed in six comprehensive high schools in an urban Southern California city. The researcher developed The Character Education Knowledge, Beliefs, and Practices survey instrument to collect data for this non-experimental correlational study. Descriptive statistics and frequency scores found that teachers are not familiar with existing character education information, strongly believe in their role as character educators, strongly believe that preparation would enhance their practice, and do not frequently practice character education school wide strategies but frequently practice character education in their classrooms. Multiple regression analyses found teachers' school wide practice of character education to be significantly associated with their knowledge of character education information. Two-way analysis of variance tests found no differences exist between gender groups and years of teaching experience for any of the variables except in the case of classroom practices which found a significant interaction effect between males teaching eight to 15 years and males teaching 16 years or more. The implications of this study highlight the importance of recognizing teachers' strong beliefs in their role to educate for character and their perspectives toward the value of preparation to enhance the practice of character education. The results not only clarity the gap that exists between theory and practice of character education but also suggest that more prevalent opportunities to educate teachers and future teachers in character education may be the next step to move toward a more comprehensive approach to character education.

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, there have been numerous government mandated school reform efforts funded by federal, state, and local governments to turn around failing schools. School districts in the NYCDOE endorse professional learning communities to help teachers obtain the knowledge and skills that can lead to increased educator effectiveness and improved results for students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how the implementation of the professional development (PD) provided to English Language Arts (ELA) and math middle school teachers in professional learning communities (PLCs) in two high needs, under resourced, urban districts enabled teachers to create the guiding coalition to bring about change that affects teacher practice and helps improve student achievement. Research participants included two middle school principals, seven middle school teachers of ELA and math, and two PLCs. The study was guided by three research questions. Data were collected through a document review, in-person interviews, and observations of PLC interactions at the participants' middle schools. The findings that emerged included the importance of collaboration and teamwork, common planning time, content area and grade level teams, differentiated PD, peer observation and feedback, and using data to drive instruction. School leaders and teachers agree that professional learning communities are valuable sources of professional study and subsequent capacity building. They understand that having the time within their workday to strategize with their colleagues prepares them to improve outcomes for both adult and student learners. Implications for future research include investigating methods that support the professional development of veteran teachers, teachers who may have different perspectives, and less experienced leaders, so that they can make significant and sustainable contributions to PLCs.
