In the United States of America, knives are the third most commonly used weapon and the most widely used weapon in England and Australia in violent offenses. On average, attacks on Law Enforcement Officers from knives in the USA number 1,000 assaults yearly. Males in the USA were more common to commit knife crimes; however, equal proportions of males and females commit knife crimes internationally. The most common training strategies to prepare LEOs against these attacks include the 21-foot principle, scenario-based training, and classroom education material. However, none of the reported literature on knife attacks accounts for differences in attack times between sex or age. Abundant literature reports the significant differences between sexes and ages in running speed, upper body power, and upper body strength, all essential factors in knife attack execution for the attacker. Understanding how sex and age affect knife attack dynamics can provide critical information for LEOs to improve decision-making and tactical readiness for the violence occurring while on duty. The present study examined the dynamics and effects of age and sex on the type of knife motion attack, location of knife contact, and attack performance times during short-distance attacks of 21 feet and 8 feet.
