Limited knowledge and research exists concerning the relationship between synchronous online learning and its influence on student learning styles. the research questions guiding this study were (a) How are students' learning styles affected by synchronous online learning environments? (b) What are the learning style preferences before the online class? (c) What are their learning styles after the online classes? (d) Do adults change their learning styles when confronted with online synchronous learning? the research questions were answered using the Soloman-Felder learning style assessment. Data were collected from 20 respondents, all graduate students in a synchronous online course of study. A preexisting online learning style questionnaire was used to test and measure the participants' learning styles. There were several significant findings in the study. First, the research showed that levels of education, gender, or ethnicity did not influence adults' preferred learning style. Second, students with prior online learning experience appeared to prefer intuitive styles as opposed to sensing styles. Third, the data from this study showed that 90% (n = 18) of the research participants did in fact alter their learning styles during the duration of the course, but by the end of the course these students had reverted back to their original learning style. Future research should look at the impact of technology on adult learners and their commitment and motivation to learning. Additionally, future research should explore whether preferred learning style has any relationship to adults' success in learning.

Book excerpt: Abstract:Little research has been conducted that examines the learning style and personality type preferences of Extension Community Development Educators. This descriptive correlational study examines the relationship between learning style and personality type preferences of Extension Community Development program professionals in Ohio. In addition, the study explores the presence of relationships of learning style and personality type preferences to primary work assignment, length of tenure, academic major, educational attainment, age, and gender. More than 56 percent of the 67 Extension Community Development program professionals involved in this study favored a field dependent learning style, as measured by the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT). The mean GEFT score for the sample was 10.40, below the national mean of 11.4. Females were more field dependent. Subjects with academic backgrounds in the physical sciences were more field independent. Subjects with longer tenure in Extension were more field dependent. Nearly 24 percent of study participants indicated a preference for the ISTJ personality type as measured by the Personal Style Inventory (PSI). Males were more than three times more likely to prefer gathering information using their senses (sensing). Twice the number of female subjects (18) preferred gathering information through use of their unconscious (intuition) over males (9). Males preferred reacting to information with logic (thinking). Females preferred reacting to information with personal reflection and consideration for others (feeling). There was a negligible level of association between learning style and personality type subscales. The GEFT and PSI were used to gather data from Ohio State University Extension Community Development program professionals that attended district-level program meetings, completed the instruments, and provided usable data. While study results were generalized only to those providing usable data, a sampling of non-respondents revealed that non-respondent characteristics did not vary significantly from the accessible population.

Abstract: The purpose of the present research was to determine the association of intellectual styles, personality traits, and learning environment with academic achievement and career satisfaction among Chinese adult learners. The two main objectives of the research were 1) to determine the predictive relationships of intellectual styles, personality traits, and learning environment to academic achievement and career satisfaction, and 2) to investigate the mediating effects of intellectual styles in the predictive relationships of learning environment and personality traits to academic achievement and career satisfaction. To achieve the above objectives, two studies were carried out. A pilot study was conducted to test the instruments and explore various relationships. The study was conducted among 304 part-time adult learners taking evening continuing education courses in a Hong Kong institution. Acceptable reliability and validity data were obtained for most of the instruments. Most of the demographic variables were found to be significantly related to intellectual styles and career satisfaction. Personality traits were stronger in predicting career satisfaction than were intellectual styles. It was also found that personality traits had statistically significant predictive power with respect to different types of intellectual styles. The main study was a longitudinal experimental study in which a revised questionnaire, based on the results of the pilot study, was administered to a sample of 459 part-time adult learners in both control and experimental groups in the first (pre-test) and the last (post-test) lessons. A student-centered teaching style, which has been shown to facilitate creativity-generating learning styles, was adopted in the experimental group as an intervention. Data analyses focused on comparing the differences and associations between the afore-mentioned variables in the pre-test and the post-test, the differences between the control group and the experimental group, and the mediating function of styles in the predictive relationships of personality traits and perceived teaching styles to career satisfaction and academic achievement. Follow-up interviews with 15 students who showed greatest changes in intellectual styles provided qualitative data. Results of the present research generally supported the research hypotheses. First, intellectual styles (thinking styles and career personality types) were malleable and were shaped by both personality traits and environmental factors to various degrees. Second, all three types of intellectual styles (particularly Type I styles) were positively associated with higher Type I academic achievement scores and greater career satisfaction. Third, the two style constructs, thinking styles and career personality types, overlapped to some extent, although each possessed its own unique features. Fourth, both thinking styles and career personality types mediated the relationships between personality traits and career satisfaction, and between perceived teaching styles and career satisfaction. In other words, personality traits and perceived teaching styles influenced learners'' career satisfaction, mainly through the influence of learners'' Type I and Type III styles.
