Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of ocular dominance in processing visual memory and analytic tasks is unknown. Previous research variably showed both significant effects and no effect of ocular dominance on visual perception, motor control and sports performance. Consequently, the goal of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between ocular dominance and visual processing under a variety of computer gaming tasks. This was accomplished by first determining subjects' ocular dominance through the use of the Miles test, and then proceeding to examine the subjects' visual performance on four different Lumosity games under three conditions: left eye, right eye and both eyes. The results revealed that there was a relationship between ocular dominance and score in one of the games tested: Raindrops. However, there was no relationship between ocular dominance and accuracy measured in this game nor was there a relationship within any of the other games. It is possible that a relationship between ocular dominance and score in the game Raindrops may have been due to the simplicity of the task. Raindrops only measures arithmetic ability whereas the other games measure a variety of different abilities. A small sample size (n = 20) may have also contributed to the inability to detect significant effects.

Book Synopsis Laterality in Sports by : Florian Loffing
Download or read book Laterality in Sports written by Florian Loffing and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laterality in Sports: Theories and Applications summarizes recent research on the neurophysiological foundations of handedness, and how left or right lateralization (affecting primary hand use, foot use, and eye use) affects motor control, performance outcome, skill acquisition, and achievement of sports expertise—both for one-on-one sports and team sports. As laterality research has matured, greater focus has been given to applications in human endeavours and, in particular, sport. The book examines performance within individual sports, and discusses the coaching ramifications of coaching to a specific lateralization preference. Describes the neurophysiological foundations of handedness Discusses the origins and development of laterality in humans Summarizes the impact of laterality on motor control and sports performance Encompasses research on both individual and team sports Includes research on skill acquisition, coaching, and development of expertise Covers research on laterality in preferred hand, foot, and eye use in sports

Book Synopsis Asymmetry as a Foundational and Functional Requirement in Human Movement by : José Afonso
Download or read book Asymmetry as a Foundational and Functional Requirement in Human Movement written by José Afonso and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the structural and functional asymmetries in human body movement by providing cases and examples using illustrations and easy-to-understand scenarios. Specifically, it adopts an evidence-based approach to demonstrate (i) the role of structural (e.g., bone dimensions) and functional (e.g., hemispheric dominance) asymmetries in the human body; (ii) the asymmetric nature of most daily activities (e.g., gait, mastication); (iii) the benefits of asymmetry for physical performance; and (iv) the role of asymmetry in preventing injury. More than just a scientific book, it bridges the gap between theory and practice, and includes practical examples and applications. The book appeals to academics and practitioners in the fields of kinesiology, human movement, sports sciences, strength and conditioning, and physiotherapy.
