Book excerpt: "This book examines an enigma: How did a small Appalachian state, overwhelmingly poor and Protestant, become a key player in the political future of John F. Kennedy? While the primary proved to be an unpredictable campaign boost for JFK, the 1960 West Virginia contest also brought to light a host of social issues that would play a part in the overall story of Kennedy and the 1960s. The West Virginia primary meant the end of a taboo that kept the Catholic faith out of American politics; the rise of the primary as a political tool for garnering delegate support; the beginning of a nationwide confrontation with Appalachian stereotypes; and the seeds for what would become Kennedy's War on Poverty"--

Download or read book Writing JFK written by Thomas W. Benson and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the dramatic Bay of Pigs fiasco in 1961, President John F. Kennedy moved to repair the damage the invasion had done to his image and to his relations with the press. Thomas W. Benson examines two speeches and a press conference held by JFK in the days after the crisis, shedding light on how the structures of speech writing influence the texts of the speeches and policy formation, as well as the ways the press mediates and even helps to formulate presidential rhetoric. Writing JFK: Speechwriting and the Press in the Bay of Pigs Crisis provides the full text of both speeches and the press conference, as well as Benson's analysis of what would come to be known as "spin control." He demonstrates how the speeches display the implicit collaboration of Kennedy with his speech writers and the press to create a depiction of Kennedy as a political and moral agent. A central feature of the book is Benson's exploration of "the enormous power of the presidency to compel press restraint and to command the powers of publicity." In this brief but intensive examination, Benson holds a magnifying glass of rhetorical inquiry to the processes of contemporary government. These speeches have never before been studied in such depth, and Benson has drawn on many sources to arrive at unique historical and critical understanding of them. The resulting insight into the relationship among the press, politics, and public policy will appeal to all those interested in politics and rhetoric, the power of the American president, and the legacy of JFK.

Book excerpt: "'The time has come for this nation to fulfill its promise.' John F. Kennedy was born one hundred years ago. As America's thirty-fifth president, he often took bold actions: establishing a peace corps and challenging Americans to land on the moon. But on civil rights, it took the urging and the example of other courageous people--leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Jackie Robinson, and even students and children--to help him realize that the time to act was now. On June 11, 1963, Kennedy's 'big speech'--his civil rights address--was a game changer, and his efforts laid the groundwork for the Civil Rights Act of 1964--but our country's work is not finished"--

In this part of the paper, the literary aspects of the speeches are examined, most importantly the theme of the "New Frontier". Book Synopsis The Making of the President, 1960 by : Theodore Harold White
Download or read book The Making of the President, 1960 written by Theodore Harold White and published by Signet Book. This book was released on 1961 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a year before the election of John F. Kennedy, Theodore H. White began to explore the secret planning and private aspirations of seven men, each of whom, in his own way, found his dreams tormented by the power that might be his in the White House. By spring, White had begun to follow the candidates through the early jousting of the primaries. Continuing through the conventions, the campaigns and the final drama of election night, he fashioned a work of contemporary history that highlights the decisions, the acts, the accidents, that created an American President, and also the cold political realities of a country upon whose decision the world of freedom waits. At once a political study of power in America, and a chronicle of individual Americans caught in the act of leadership, it was a story no other writer attempted to tell before.--Adapted from book jacket.
