Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir, Volume 5: Plasma and Oscillations is an 11-chapter text covers the extensive research study of Langmuir in the field of gas discharges. This book specifically tackles oscillations in ionized gases. The opening chapters describe the plasma-boundary phenomena and the use of a probe to separate the primary electron beam from the scattered electrons. The succeeding chapters deal with the collisions between electrons and gas molecules, oscillations in ionized gases, and the interaction of electron and positive ion space charges in cathode sheaths. These topics are followed by discussions on the general theory of the plasma of an arc and the properties of metastable atoms and electrons produced by resonance radiation in neon. The concluding chapter provides experimental evidence that the secondary electrons originate from bombardment by metastable atoms. This book is of value to physical chemists and physical chemistry researchers.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Gas Discharges by : A. M. Howatson
Download or read book An Introduction to Gas Discharges written by A. M. Howatson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Gas Discharges: Second Edition aims to provide a compact introduction to the subject of gas discharges, which continues to make both scientific and industrial progress. In this second edition, the author has made minor corrections, rewritten and expanded some sections, used SI units and modernized notions, in hopes of making the book more up to date. Included in the book is a short history of the subject, an introduction that enumerates the types of gas discharges, the fundamental processes, and then moves on to the more specific areas such as the breakdown, the self-sustaining discharge, equilibrium, plasma properties and measurements, and the technological applications of gas discharges. Concise and easy to understand, the text is for students and researchers who wish to learn the subject and prepare them for more advanced readings.
Book Synopsis Oscillations and Noise in Low Pressure DC Discharges by : F. W. Crawford
Download or read book Oscillations and Noise in Low Pressure DC Discharges written by F. W. Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis is concerned mainly with oscillations and fluctuations which occur either spontaneously, or as a result of deliberate excitation, in low-pressure, hot-cathode plasmas. Experimental observations on high and low frequency effects occurring spontaneously are discussed, and speculations are made on the possible gener-ATION MECHANISMS. In many cases, theories of these mechanisms have been treated in experiments involving deliberate excitation of oscillations, and comparisons are made where relevant. For device applications, and to relieve the difficulties which occur in quantitative experiments in plasma physics, it is important that the sources of spontaneous oscillations should be understood and suppressed if possible. The analysis includes a discussion of work which has been carried out to reduce these effects, and concludes with some suggestions for further lines of attack on the problems. (Author).
