This book was released on 1997 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From reading the title you may be wondering what imparkment' means. It is actually the conversion of land into parks, either by the owners of manorial estates or the church. Way's survey is mainly focused on the environmental effects and changes in the landscape that imparkment' brought about, though he does discuss social conflict that it caused. The bulk of the book consists of tables detailing documents relating to parks, a gazeteer of parks in Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire and maps, both ancient and modern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parks were prominent and, indeed, controversial features of the medieval countryside, but they have been unevenly studied and remain only partly understood. Stephen Mileson provides the first full-length study of the subject, examining parks across the country and throughout the Middle Ages in their full social, economic, jurisdictional, and landscape context. The first half of the book investigates the purpose of these royal and aristocratic reserves, which have been variously claimed as hunting grounds, economic assets, landscape settings for residences, and status symbols. An emphasis on the aristocratic passion for the chase as the key motivation for park-making provides an important challenge to more recent views and allows for a deeper appreciation of the connection between park-making and the expression of power and lordship. The second part of the book examines the impact of park creation on wider society, from the king and aristocracy to peasants and townsmen. Instead of the traditional emphasis on the importance of royal regulation, greater attention is paid to the effects of lordly park-making on other members of the landed elite and ordinary people. These widespread enclosures interfered with customary uses of woodland and waste, hunting practices, roads and farming; not surprisingly, they could become a focus for aristocratic feud, popular protest and furtive resistance. Combining historical, archaeological, and landscape evidence, this ground-breaking study provides fresh insight into contemporary values and how they helped to shape the medieval landscape.

Book excerpt: The romance of extraction underlies and partly defines Western modernity and our cultural imaginaries. Combining affect studies and environmental humanities, this volume analyzes societies' devotion to extraction and fossil resources. This devotion is shaped by a nostalgic view on settler colonialism as well as by contemporary »affective economies« (Sara Ahmed). The contributors examine the links between forms of extractivism and gendered discourses of sentimentality and the ways in which cultural narratives and practices deploy the sentimental mode (in plots of attachment, sacrifice, and suffering) to promote or challenge extractivism.

Book excerpt: New contributions to the most important critical debates of the period. The themes of 'image' and 'representation' play a major part in the essays collected in this volume; subjects explored include the religious sympathies of townsfolk and gentry and their physical manifestations, the cultural setting for the activities of leading families of the period and the interaction of Crown and community of the realm. As the fruit of original archival research on the later Middle Ages, overall the contributions offer the most up-to-date scholarship on the period, and a snapshot of the most crucial issues in current research. Book excerpt: The park - a feature of the landscape we always associate with the hunting of deer - played an important role in the psyche of Britain's medieval aristocracy. This well-illustrated book offers a reappraisal of the park by a new generation of landscape researchers, who use a diversity of approaches to assess its economy, ecology and social role. They show how parks actually had many functions other than deer management and hunting; they were integrated into the wider rural economy, and also provided a means by which seigniorial control of the landscape might be demonstrated. They varied considerably across Britain, and are of considerable conservation significance today.

Book excerpt: In this detailed study, Liddiard examines the processes and factors which determined the number, distribution and location of castles and considers how a castle's construction altered its environment. Using structures such as Castle Acre, Castle Rising, Middleton and Horsford as examples, Liddiard suggests that the location of most of Norfolk's castles was shaped by social factors and not military considerations. Castles were primarily intended to act as residences even though they were designed to dramatically dominate the landscape.

Book excerpt: the county in medieval times. Parks were particularly numerous in the north-eastern part of the county and relatively sparse in the south-west. The underlying reasons for this pattern are explored, focusing in particular on the unusual relationship between the distribution of the parks and the distribution of woodland in the county at Domesday. Based on an enormous amount of original work, this meticulously researched book opens a window onto medieval Hertfordshire and illuminates a significant aspect of the county's landscape history." --Book Jacket.
