Book excerpt: Peer tutoring is a service provided at a community college that is voluntary for students to use. In this study, data were collected and analyzed to determine whether peer tutoring had an effect on mathematics student success in these areas: retention rates, grades in mathematics courses (with D or F grades, as well as withdrawals considered non-success), and student overall grade point averages. The mathematics students were separated based on course taken (Pre-College Algebra and College Algebra) as well as by the number of hours that they had received peer tutoring. A stratified random sample of tutored students was obtained. The tutored students were then compared to all students. Then, the differing levels of tutoring were compared to one another. Mixed results were obtained. The sample of tutored students had a statistically significantly higher retention rate than all students. When comparing retention rates for the different levels of tutoring in both classes, no statistically significant difference was found. No statistically significant differences were obtained when comparing the D, F, or withdrawal rate of students. There was a statistically significant difference between the overall mean GPA of the sample of tutored students and that of all students. The tutored Pre-College Algebra students did not have a statistically significant difference in overall GPA, but the tutored College Algebra students did.

Book excerpt: Veteran peer-tutoring programs have been growing in number, but little research has addressed their effects on student veterans' success in postsecondary education. Schlossberg's (2012) adult transition theory has been applied to scholarly research on veteran postsecondary transition experiences using the fourth factor, strategies, focusing on student academic assistance such as tutoring. My study builds on Schlossberg's theory by examining a veteran peer-tutoring program. This study utilized a causal-comparative, between-subjects design to examine end-of-semester grades of a treatment (n=28) and comparison (n=28) group. Also, the relationship between frequency of tutoring visits and end-of-semester grades within the treatment group was examined. To obtain an adequate sample size, data across four semesters (spring 2017, fall 2017, spring 2018, and fall 2018) and mathematics courses (college algebra, precalculus, & calculus I) were aggregated for each group. A stratified randomized matching procedure was used to ensure the treatment and comparison groups had equal representation with regard to semester, course, and ethnicity. Mann-Whitney U test was the appropriate analysis approach due to low sample sizes and having an ordinal outcome variable (Field, 2013). Results found no statistically significant difference in grade distribution between groups. Spearman's rho was used to measure the frequency of tutoring visits and end-of-semester mathematics grades within the treatment group. The relationship between these two variables was not statistically significant. Greater usage of the intervention did not result in higher grades for those in the treatment group. Implications and recommendations for developmental education and learning assistance researchers and practitioners are discussed.

Book excerpt: The current mathematics curriculum intertwined with the Common Core State Standards has created a struggle for teachers and struggling students in the classroom to find time and successful ways for interventions. Research has shown for decades that tutoring has been a useful strategy employed with students and over time has been altered through trial and error to create different types of tutoring based upon student needs. Extensive previous research using Reciprocal Peer Tutoring (RPT) has occurred at the elementary and high school level. The purpose of this study is to select the specific research based tutoring program RPT and to use the historical research to create a study to explore its impact on struggling 6th grade mathematic students views of their math skills and show academic gains or losses. In the study described, students took a survey of their views of their individual math skills before and after the implementation as well as a pre and post-test for Quarter 1. Twelve students were selected to participate in the study that occurred 5 days per week for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks data was collected and analyzed to show the effects of RPT on academics and math viewpoint. At the completion of the study students were shown to have made growth in their math skills from quarter one. [from author's abstract]

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of peer tutoring on the achievement of freshmen student in remedial mathematics, reading and writing from one community college and one university. The total population for this study is 300 freshmen, 150 freshmen from the community college and 150 freshmen from the university, composition of male (N=42%) and female (N=58%). The instructors will allow the researcher to pre-test selected students on the second day of class (Fall 2006) using the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (Form E) for reading, Algebra Skills Test (Test I) for math, and pre-determined writing assignments for writing. After four weeks of peer tutoring (quasi-experimental group), the researcher will retest the students (post-test) and collect the test score from the posttest and analyze the data to determine the impact of peer tutoring on freshmen student in remedial mathematics, reading and writing. There were two hypothesis tested. The hypothesis revealed that there was no significant difference of t-test results for pretest scores in terms of Reading for Comprehensive and Vocabulary, Math, and English. It indicated that participants grouped by gender had no pretest threat in both the treatment and the control groups. Although the present study offers additional positive results to those studies conducted in the past, it is the recommendation of the researcher that additional studies needs to be undertaken.

Total correct improved during goal setting as well. The students all responded to the social validity survey that they thought peer tutoring helped them learn more multiplication facts than when they were studying on their own. These results of this study were consistent with other research on peer tutoring and the acquisition of math facts.

Book excerpt: Many in the mathematics community in the U.S. are involved in mathematics education in various capacities. This book highlights the breadth of the work in K-16 mathematics education done by members of US departments of mathematical sciences. It contains contributions by mathematicians and mathematics educators who do work in areas such as teacher education, quantitative literacy, informal education, writing and communication, social justice, outreach and mentoring, tactile learning, art and mathematics, ethnomathematics, scholarship of teaching and learning, and mathematics education research. Contributors describe their work, its impact, and how it is perceived and valued. In addition, there is a chapter, co-authored by two mathematicians who have become administrators, on the challenges of supporting, evaluating, and rewarding work in mathematics education in departments of mathematical sciences. This book is intended to inform the readership of the breadth of the work and to encourage discussion of its value in the mathematical community. The writing is expository, not technical, and should be accessible and informative to a diverse audience. The primary readership includes all those in departments of mathematical sciences in two or four year colleges and universities, and their administrators, as well as graduate students. Researchers in education may also find topics of interest. Other potential readers include those doing work in mathematics education in schools of education, and teachers of secondary or middle school mathematics as well as those involved in their professional development.
