Book excerpt: Axial Flow Fans: Design and Practice focuses on the design of axial flow fans and the practices involved in their applications. The manuscript first offers information on the fluid mechanics of ducted fans, boundary layer and skin friction relations, and aerofoil data for blade design. Discussions focus on flow deflection in cascade of aerofoils, pitching moment, lift, surface roughness in turbulent boundary layers, turbulent boundary layers in pressure gradients, laminar skin friction, viscosity and boundary layers, and similarity and non-dimensional numbers. The text then ponders on vortex flows in ducting and fan, ducts, and introduction to fan design methods. The book takes a look at the momentum and blade element considerations on free vortex flow of rotor and rotor losses. Topics include momentum considerations, profile drag, tip clearance losses, optimum conditions in terms of the flow and swirl coefficients, pressure relations and velocity vectors, and thrust and torque gradients. Tail fairing design and associated losses, overall efficiencies, torque, thrust, and power, and the design of fan unit with arbitrary vortex flow are also discussed. The publication is a dependable source of information for engineers and readers interested in the design of axial flow fans and practices involved in their operation.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed flow measurements made in the casing boundary layer of a two-stage transonic fan are summarized. These measurements were taken at stations upstream of the fan, between all blade rows, and downstream of the last blade row. At the design tip speed (429 m/sec) the fan achieved a peak efficiency of 0.846 at a pressure ratio of 2.471. The boundary layer data were obtained at three weight flows at the design speed: one near choke flow, one near peak efficiency, and one near stall. The data presented show steep axial velocity profiles at the stator exits were not as steep as those at the rotor exits. The data also show overturning of the flow at the tip at the stator exits. The effect of mixing is shown by the redistribution of the first-stage rotor-exit total temperature profile as is passes through the following stator.

Book excerpt: Fans In a unique approach, this textbook combines the design and construction of centrifugal and axial fans with the problem of their noise generation and its mitigation. Easily applicable methods of fan selection, aerodynamic fan design, and fan noise prediction are compiled, including most of the underlying physical principles. Other features of this book include introductions to numerical and experimental methods, simulation-based optimization techniques for fan design, and psychoacoustic methods for evaluating fan noise. Numerous practical problems illustrate and reinforce the ideas and concepts. Content Fan performance parameters, demand of a plant and fan selection, fan performance characteristics, model laws, flow kinematics, efficiencies - Design methods for centrifugal and axial fans - Mechanisms of fan sound generation, methods for fan sound prediction - Psychoacoustic evaluation of fan noise - Design features of noise reduced fans - Computational fluid dynamics, fan test rigs, simulation-based optimization - Practice problems and solutions. Target group Students of mechanical engineering at colleges and universities Engineers in the industrial fan manufacturing industry, planning engineers for heating, ventilation air conditioning systems and in equipment and plant engineering Author Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Carolus taught fluid mechanics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Siegen, Germany, with a focus on fluid machinery.
