Book excerpt: An analysis of the radar cross section data acquired from the NORDSEE tower during the MARSEN Experiment by the Naval Research Laboratory was made. A dependence on both wind speed and sea state was expected, based on observations and results obtained during the Gulf of Mexico Experiment. The range of variation of wind speed and wave slope during MARSEN were substantial. However, within a narrow range of wind speeds the range of variation of wave slopes was insufficient to demonstrate a radar cross section dependence on it. The results contained herein display appreciable randomness at each slope value; this tends to mask a likely dependence of radar cross section on slope. These results do not conflict with those obtained in the Gulf of Mexico, some of which are included for comparison, they are just too limited in range to add independent support.

Book excerpt: The Normalized Radar Cross-Section (NRCS), the fundamental measurement made by radar scatterometers, was obtained as part of the Water-Air Vertical Exchanges 1987 (WAVES87) experiment. The experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of environmental parameters on the NRCS and was performed from a research tower located in Lake Ontario, on which two microwave scatterometers operating at 14.0 and 5.0GHz were installed for six weeks in the autumn of 1987. The novel aspect of this experiment was that the 14.0GHz radar automatically rotated through 300 deg in azimuth angle at six different incidence angles to the water surface, accompanied by simultaneous measurements of wind stress and high resolution directional wave spectra. Therefore, the incidence and azimuthal angle behavior of the NRCS was examined as a function of wind speed, friction velocity, wind direction, wave direction and atmospheric stability. The dependence of the NRCS on wind speed for various incidence angles is similar to previous results. However, the slope exponents of the NRCS vs. 19.5m wind speed curves at intermediate incidence angles are higher than the corresponding open ocean measurements. Scaling the lake neutral wind speed data by the ratio of lake to ocean drag coefficients reduces the slopes of the curves and suggests the drag coefficient has a sea state dependence. (RH).

Book excerpt: The University of Kansas and the University of Washington conducted a series of experiments during July and August of 1989, and July and August of 1990, to study the effects of various geophysical parameters on radar backscatter. The experiments were conducted from a platform in Lake Washington. Measurements of backscattered power and radar range were made by the University of Kansas, and environmental data such as wind speed, wind direction, and air and water temperature were measured by the University of Washington. Results of preliminary data processing are described. Radar data were acquired using two radars, one that operated at C and X bands and another at Ka band. Measurements were made at W and HH antenna polarizations, at different angles of incidence and under various wind conditions. Plots of backscattered power, normalized radar cross section, and wave height, and the Modulation Transfer Functions of selected data are presented. Book excerpt: This is the final report on ONR Grant N00014-89-J-3022. Since most of the work was in journal articles, conference proceedings, and reports, this report is brief. Work continued, and was largely concluded, on analysis of the TOWARD, SAXON-CLT, and NILDEX data sets. Comparison between optical and radio measurements of ripple spectra at TOWARD showed favorable results. Although the wind direction was usually unfavorable for SAXON-CLT, we obtained useful data on modulation in the crosswind direction. We also demonstrated that a vector slope gauge can work, but for logistic reasons its deployment made its footprint close to the tower. Hence, the data are useful only for proof of concept, not for oceanographic application. A new theory of SAR imaging of the ocean was developed. It incorporates elements of previous theories, but shows an improved way to find out the effects of signal modulations on the observed spectra. It confirms, by a different method, the results from several other theoretical and experimental studies on processor focus adjustment. These show optimum image contrast occurs for along-track wave motion when the processor is set to (phase velocity)/2. The method of analysis used allowed closer examination of the basis for the two-scale (Bragg resonance with slope modulation) model for ocean backscatter. The results cast some doubt on the validity of the Bragg-scatter model for explaining many observed phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations of surface wave and radar cross section modulation induced by a spatially varying surface current have been compared with field measurements made with SAR (X- and L-bands), real aperture radar (X-band), laser slope guage, and CCD video camera during the Joint Canada/U.S. Ocean Wave Investigation Project (JOWIP) which took place in August 1983. The comparison reveals that (i) many existing wind-relaxation models underpredict the hydrodynamic effect of the current, (ii) simple Bragg scattering model underpredicts radar backscatter modulation for higher frequency radars (e.g., X-band) but appears acceptable at lower radar frequencies (e.g., L-band), (iii) the discrepancy between measurements and calculations at high radar frequency is reduced, but not eliminated, when the effects of long surface waves have been accounted for. Keywords include: Radar backscatter, Surface wave modulations, Wave-current interactions, Georgia strait experiment, and JOWIP. (RRH).
