Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses many of the complex issues raised by North American integration through the lens of one of the largest and most global industries in the region: textiles and apparel. In part, this is a story of winners and losers in the globalization process, especially if one focuses on jobs lost and jobs gained in different countries and communities within North America, defined here as: Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. However, it would be a mistake to view the industry solely in these zerosum terms. The North American apparel industry is an excellent illustration of larger trends in the global economy, in which regional divisions of labor appear to be one of the most stable and effective responses to globalization. The contributors to this volume are an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who have all done detailed fieldwork at the firm and factory levels in one or more countries of North America. Taken together the essays offer theoretical and methodological innovations built around the intersection of the global commodity chains and industrial districts literatures, as well as innovative approaches to studying the impact of cross-national, interfirm networks in terms of production and trade issues, and local development outcomes for workers and communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only comprehensive historical analysis of the globalization of the U.S. apparel industry, this book focuses on the reemergence of sweatshops in the United States and the growth of new ones abroad. Ellen Israel Rosen, who has spent more than a decade investigating the problems of America's domestic apparel workers, now probes the shifts in trade policy and global economics that have spawned momentous changes in the international apparel and textile trade. Making Sweatshops asks whether the process of globalization can be promoted in ways that blend industrialization and economic development in both poor and rich countries with concerns for social and economic justice—especially for the women who toil in the industry's low-wage sites around the world. Rosen looks closely at the role trade policy has played in globalization in this industry. She traces the history of current policies toward the textile and apparel trade to cold war politics and the reconstruction of the Pacific Rim economies after World War II. Her narrative takes us through the rise of protectionism and the subsequent dismantling of trade protection during the Reagan era to the passage of NAFTA and the continued push for trade accords through the WTO. Going beyond purely economic factors, this valuable study elaborates the full historical and political context in which the globalization of textiles and apparel has taken place. Rosen takes a critical look at the promises of prosperity, both in the U.S. and in developing countries, made by advocates for the global expansion of these industries. She offers evidence to suggest that this process may inevitably create new and more extreme forms of poverty.

Book excerpt: In this report, the Economic Strategy Institute explains how to structure a North American Free Trade Agreement to strengthen the U.S. economy and bolster the competitiveness of an increasingly integrated North American economy. The report begins with a description of U.S. and Mexican interests in the FTA, and an analysis of how they converge and diverge. It then details the assumptions about the Mexican economy and about the economic future of North America that have been driving U.S. policy. Following a critique of these assumptions, the study paints a detailed portrait of the Mexican economy as it is, not as many Americans wish it to be. The economic impact of the FTA being sought by the administration is gauged by describing recent quantitative and qualitative trends in U.S.-Mexico trade, discussing the body of econometric studies published to date on the FTA, and presenting the Institute's own projections, which are based on analyses not only of trade flows, but of investment flows and Mexican industrial policies. Finally, the report identifies a framework for U.S.-Mexico relations likely to strengthen the U.S. economy. It outlines the criteria that a successful agreement has to meet, and presents detailed recommendations on how to achieve these goals in areas ranging from trade and investment to energy and the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) represents a historic change in relations among Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The effect of the agreement on the three economies has generated controversy and some degree of alarm within each country. In this book, noted trade and development experts review the available literature on the effects of NAFTA on the three member countries and the world trading system. They evaluate how NAFTA will affect areas such as economic growth, employment, income distribution, industry, and agriculture in Canada, Mexico, and the United States; and consider the significance the trade agreement holds for the rest of the world. Drusill K. Brown begins the discussion by providing an overview and comparison of the general results from recent studies. Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda and Sherman Robinson explore in greater detail the potential effects of NAFTA on wages and employment in Mexico and the United States. Sidney Wintrab reviews industry-specific effects of NAFTA, in particular, the environment, the social agenda, and human rights and democracy. Finally, Carlos Alberto Primo Braga considers the implications of NAFTA on the rest of the world. Following each of these chapters, international scholars assess the alternatives and provide recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: Studying the urban agglomeration of Los Angeles County is on the one hand very interesting, exciting, as there is such a wide variety of people living there. This not only concerning ethnic origins but also in view of social classes, (haves and have nots), sub cultures, 'Lebenswelten' and milieus. On the other hand, studying L.A. empirically, i.e. living, working and more than anything else talking to people while observing them, gives an insight into how a society so full of discrepancies works and operates. "To live from day to day. That is life in L.A." Mirna, Los Angeles Garment Worker from Guatemala. Undocumented migration to the U.S. and the U.S.-American textile and garment industry are examples that demonstrate well the interconnectedness of international economic interests, policy-making and migration flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have been shocked by media reports of the dismal working conditions in factories that make clothing for U.S. companies. But while well intentioned, many of these reports about child labor and sweatshop practices rely on stereotypes of how Third World factories operate, ignoring the complex economic dynamics driving the global apparel industry. To dispel these misunderstandings, Jane L. Collins visited two very different apparel firms and their factories in the United States and Mexico. Moving from corporate headquarters to factory floors, her study traces the diverse ties that link First and Third World workers and managers, producers and consumers. Collins examines how the transnational economics of the apparel industry allow firms to relocate or subcontract their work anywhere in the world, making it much harder for garment workers in the United States or any other country to demand fair pay and humane working conditions. Putting a human face on globalization, Threads shows not only how international trade affects local communities but also how workers can organize in this new environment to more effectively demand better treatment from their distant corporate employers.
