Book excerpt: The Santonian-Campanian Eagle Formation in south-central Montana was deposited along the western margin of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway and is composed of a series of well preserved regressive and transgressive deposits. This study documents the depositional evolution of the informal lower member of the Eagle Formation exposed near Billings, MT. Detailed mapping and characterization of the internal stratigraphy, facies architecture, and bounding surfaces of the lower Eagle provide the basis for reconstruction of a paleodelta system that serves as a valuable reservoir analog within the Cretaceous Seaway and elsewhere. This study demonstrates that the informal lower member of the Eagle Formation in south-central Montana was deposited in a regressive to transgressive wave-dominated deltaic system. Within this deltaic succession the identification of five facies and four bounding surface types are used to establish a two-phase depositional history: 1) a regressive phase characterized by prograding pro-delta to distal delta front deposits emplaced below fair weather wave base but above storm wave base; and 2) a transgressive phase characterized by landward dipping proximal to distal shoal overwash fan deposits derived from combined-flow storm-generated turbidity currents. A maximum regressive surface (MRS) separates underlying prograding deltaic deposits from downlapping shoal overwash fan deposits above. Shoal overwash fan packages dip and stack en-echelon towards the paleoshoreline indicating landward migration of the shoal during delta transgression. A time-transgressive ravinement surface (TRS) developed on the basinward side of the transgressive shoal and migrated landward with the shoreline, truncating of shoal overwash fan deposits.

Book excerpt: The (Campanian) Blair Formation (Fm), along the Rock Springs Uplift (a N-S, doubly plunging anticline) near the city of Rock Springs, Wyoming, comprises a stratigraphic 3rd order sequence set that included lowstand, transgressive, and highstand deposits. The Blair Fm was emplaced in shallow marine depositional settings (less than 100m of water) and contains deposits of offshore, prodelta , fluvial-dominated delta front, tidally-influenced delta front , wave-influenced delta front, and subaqueous terminal distributary channels. Delta deposits coarsen and thicken upward with variable degree of reworking by tidal(t) currents or waves(w) indicated by: sigmoids(t), single and double mud drapes(t), mud chips(t), and hummocky cross-stratification(w). No evidence of deep-water basin floor or slope deposits is present in the Blair. Additionally, the Blair is similar to other shallow marine deposits of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway (CWIS) that display a preferential tidal dominance during lowstand and preferential wave dominance during highstand. The Blair Fm evolves from lowstand, tidally-influenced deltaic deposits to transgressive offshore and prodeltaic deposits, and ultimately into highstand wave-influenced deltaic deposits. Local embryonic Laramide uplift and differential subsidence led to changes in the basin floor slope and geometry, likely steepening the formerly gentle, ramp-style geometry of the retroarc foreland basin, and inducing high sediment supply near local uplifts. Presence of delta-front turbidites to the north and prodeltaic mudstones in the south are indicative of the locally high sediment supply to the north. The changes in basin floor topography and/or steepening of the basinal slope are evidenced by the successive, meter-scale slumped intervals and a thickness anomaly within the middle Blair, along with amplification of tidal signatures in the lower Blair. This incipient uplift during the emplacement of the Blair may have occurred earlier (82 Ma) than the postulated earliest timing of uplift at around 80 Ma suggested by other workers. The Blair Fm is considered an unconventional (tight), heterolithic reservoir that produces mainly gas in hydrocarbon fields near the Rock Springs anticline. The lower Blair, heterolithic, tidally-influenced lowstand wedge deposits may serve as an analog for other lowstand tidal reservoirs of the CWIS, including the Frewens sandstone of the Frontier Fm

Book excerpt: This study examines thin-bedded facies within shelf and prodelta deposits of the Cretaceous Ferron Notom Delta in central Utah. Thin beds may be the result of storms (tempestites), ignitive turbidity currents, or hyperpycnal flows. This study quantitatively evaluates the proportion of each facies types within heterolithic strata at the base of the sandier lithofacies to better characterize the relative proportion of formative processes. Mud along shelves has traditionally been linked to suspension settling. This study also quantitatively compares structures initiated by traction deposition to those linked to suspension settling in an attempt to show that most mud deposited offshore is due to reworking by waves and storms, and hyperpycnal flows. Primary data were derived from well-exposed outcrops of parasequences 5a, 5b, 6, 11, and 16b, within the Notom deltaic wedge, which represent a spectrum of wave-dominated shorefaces to river-dominated deltas. Parasequences 5a and 5b are comprised of over 60% HCS beds with subordinate amounts of wave-rippled strata. Parasequence 5a represents a high-energy wave environment. Parasequence 5b also reflects a wave-dominated environment, however, a greater proportion of massive to planar interbeds suggests fluvial and wave mixing. Parasequence 6 contains predominantly normal and inverse graded units with numerous Bouma sequences and starved ripples. Parasequence 6 is river/flood dominated, containing both ignitive turbidites and hyperpycnites. Parasequence 11 is dominated by graded bedding, and shows the highest degree of river/flood dominance with the highest evidence of hyperpycnal deposits seen within the three parasequences. Parasequence 16 is dominated by massive units, along with graded beds, Bouma sequences, and rare HCS. Parasequence 16b shows evidence of all three processes, although ignitive turbidite deposits seem to dominate. Over 90% of all parasequences were represented by bedload deposits as opposed to suspended sediment settling. Tempestites, ignitive turbidites, and hyperpycnites likely occur within the same system, interacting with each other, producing deposits which have remnant signatures of each. Results show it is possible to document the relative proportion of formative processes within heterolithic sequences, as well as to quantify them in terms of wave versus fluvial versus tidal dominance, as well as bedload versus suspended load transport.
