Chapter 1 provides a background of the evolution of THz-TDS from a historical and physics/engineering perspective followed by an extensive section from a chemistry perspective dedicated to the interaction of THz radiation with matter. A variety of measurement techniques are discussed, culminating in a literature review. Chapter 2 focuses on the investigation of the 20 essential amino acids as crystalline solids using THz spectroscopy, in which absorbance of THz frequencies by crystal lattice phonon propagation is documented. A study dedicated to qualitative analysis of L-alanine introduces a novel approach for the spectral assignment of the observed THz absorbance frequencies to the crystal structure of the analyte. Chapter 3 presents the study of five types of excised human breast tissue - normal, benign, lobular carcinoma, ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive ductal carcinoma - using THz pulsed imaging, which consists of successive THz-TDS measurements over a two-dimensional space. The presentation and evaluation of the tissue images are supplemented with the examination of frequency-domain reflectance spectra of selected tissue areas. The results of the studies presented herein are followed by detailed guidelines for the maximization of the efficiency and benefit of continued pursuits in this field. Chapter 4 investigates the potential of reflectance-mode THz-TDS as a method for the non-destructive determination of the gel-point of sol-gel monoliths. Results are used to compare the gel point properties of sol-gels with and without a stabilizing dendrimer. The conclusions are found to support a particular theory concerning the stabilization mechanism of the dendrimer in the sol-gel process.

Book excerpt: Local electromagnetic field fluctuations and related enhancement of nonlinear phenomena in metal-dielectric composites near the percolation threshold (percolation composites) have recently become an area of active study, because of the many fundamental problems involved and the high potential for various applications. It has been recognized recently that local field fluctuations can be especially large in the optical and infrared spectral ranges due to the surface plasmon resonance in metallic granules and their clusters. The strong fluctuations of the local electric and magnetic fields result in the enhancement of various optical effects: anomalous absorption, Rayleigh and Raman scattering, generation of the higher harmonic, Kerr nonlinearity, etc. Nonlinear percolation composites are potentially of great practical importance as media with intensity-dependent dielectric functions and, in particular, as nonlinear filters and optical bistable elements. The optical response of nonlinear composites can be tuned, for example, by controlling the volume fraction and morphology of constituents. This book presents a new theory of electromagnetic field distribution and nonlinear optical processes in metal-dielectric composites. The new approach is based on a percolation theory and the fact that the problem of optical excitations in percolation composites mathematically maps the Anderson transition problem in quantum mechanics. The theory predicts localization of the excitations (surface plasmons) in percolation composites and describes in detail the localization pattern that allows one to obtain relatively simple expressions for the enhancement of linear and nonlinear optical responses. Thistheory is supported by recent near-field experiments where the surface plasmon localization has been directly observed in the percolating composites in optical and microwave bands.

Book excerpt: The terahertz (THz) band between 100 GHz and 10 THz is particularly interesting for a wide range of applications since it unifies the properties and advantages of the adjoining spectral ranges, the infrared and the millimeter waves. But unfortunately in this spectral range the optical as well as electronic systems can not offer a sufficient performance in terms of power and sensitivity. So in both approaches, new sources and detectors are developed to expand the accessible electromagnetic spectrum into the THz range. In this thesis new developments in the field of optical THz systems for THz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) are investigated using femtosecond pulses for the coherent generation and detection. New schemes for THz emitters are elaborated. The main aim is to obtain a THz source with high output power in the frequency range between 100 GHz and 4 THz for femtosecond pumped systems. In a cooperation with the RIKEN Institute in Japan an enhancement cavity for the pump radiation is developed. This is an actively stabilized synchronously pumped ring resonator which recycles the unused pump radiation. As THz emitter a lithium niobate crystal in Cherenkov-type geometry is applied. Lithium niobate is particularly well suited as a THz emitter because of its high nonlinearity, high transparency in the near infrared and the well developed poling technique. To guarantee an efficient broadband surface emitting scheme also for long crystals an attached silicon prism is used as THz output coupler. The enhancement cavity is characterized in terms of properties for the near infrared pump pulses as well as for the emitted THz radiation. So far most of all THz-TDS systems are based on pulsed lasers with wavelengths around 800 nm. In order to apply readily available femtosecond fiber lasers at 1.5 μm wavelength, used e. g. in the telecommunication field, new materials for THz emitters have to be investigated. Here results of various emitters based on different semiconductors with pump wavelengths up to 2 μm are presented. For the application of THz radiation different TDS systems are realized. Limiting factors like laser power, pump wavelength, flexibility, space consumption and imaging optics are addressed. Portable systems and fiber based systems are constructed. A special emphasis is placed on a THz imaging system, which is used in feasibility studies for industrial customers. Results of industrial relevant measurements are presented. The recorded THz electric field is typically evaluated in terms of amplitude and phase. This shows a THz image underlining different properties of the device under test. Potential applications are in the field of non-destructive testing and final inspection (geometry, thickness, coatings, interfaces). The detection limit in the time domain is demonstrated for thin layers and calibrated samples. THz spectroscopy also can give the “spectral fingerprint”, an important decision criterion for the sample to be identified (content, substance distribution). Simulants as well as real world explosives and poisons are measured. The advantages of THz time-domain spectroscopy compared to cw or passive THz systems are discussed.
