Book excerpt: Parent involvement is a crucial aspect of a child's education, reinforcing the importance of education both at home and at school. However, parents of ESL students can have little to no involvement in their child's education due to circumstances beyond their control. By documenting the impact of Family School, a parent involvement program, on parents', translators' and teachers' attitudes towards parent participation in elementary school, the study identifies factors that can improve the parental involvement of limited English proficient parents. Questionnaires, interviews, and observations were used to identify the factors that both encourage and discourage parent involvement, as well as to portray the impact of a parent involvement program on participants' attitudes. The results revealed that the language barrier and lack of teacher communication are the primary factors that discourage parent involvement, while student success and successful teacher communication are the main factors that encourage parent involvement. Family School had a positive impact on the majority of its participants, changing the ways in which each group viewed the importance of parent involvement. When parent involvement programs create opportunities for parent education and involvement with their child's education, and are sensitive to the needs of non-native English speaking parents, the parents will benefit significantly from these endeavors.

Book excerpt: To study the question "What are parents' and teachers' attitudes toward parent involvement?" nine parents and seven teachers from one school were interviewed for a qualitative study. A wide variety of philosophies of parent involvement were found. The parents, as a whole, considered themselves important influences in their children's education and wanted more communication from the school. The teachers had varying needs for parent involvement. While all of the teachers wanted the support from the parents at home, some wanted parents involved in the classroom. One implication of this study is that in order to have a positive relationship with parents, educators need to have an understanding of the wide spectrum of possibilities for and definitions of parent involvement.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the parent involvement attitudes and practices of early care and education teachers. A sample of 171 early care and education teachers rated the degree to which they agreed or disagreed with 25 statements regarding general attitudes of parent involvement, as well as family and teacher and/or center obligations in creating family-school partnerships. Teachers were also asked to indicate the frequency in which they engaged in 9 specified activities that could be used to engage families in their young child's education. The surveyed teachers were from 31 early care and education centers that were participants in a quality improvement initiative designed to improve the school readiness of the children they serve. Fifteen of the 31 centers received additional services from a family engagement specialist, who worked to increase parent involvement at the centers and to strengthen family-school partnerships. Results indicated that, overall, the teachers reported positive views about parent involvement and the families they served. They recognized the benefits of family-school partnerships for young children. The teachers reported feeling that it was an important part of their job to involve all families and that all families had strengths and abilities that could be used to help their children get ready for kindergarten. Modest differences were found in the responses between teachers who had received assistance from family engagement specialists and those who had not, with teachers who were part of the intervention indicating stronger support from their directors and center and being more likely to talk to families about concerns. All of the teachers surveyed reported using a wide variety of strategies to engage families, with teachers in the intervention group using parent workshops and newsletters more often that the non-intervention group. Slight but significant differences were found on some of the survey questions related to teacher characteristics, such as hours worked at the center per week and age of children taught. With increased emphasis being placed on quality improvement in early care and education, it is important to know how those being asked to implement possibly new and demanding changes in practice feel about and respond to what is being asked of them. Efforts to support them should be effective and responsive to their current views and practices.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this dissertation utilized both quantitative and qualitative strategies to examine the impact that teacher participation in a targeted home visitation program had on their attitudes, practices, and parent participation within their classrooms. One hundred elementary school teachers were randomly assigned to the treatment and control groups. The treatment group was asked to attend a 2-hour training and conduct 3 home visits during the implementation phase of the study. All participants were asked to complete the 25-item Likert researcher designed instrument. Selected participants from the treatment group were asked to participate in a focus group. The responses to the questionnaire and focus group were analyzed for quantitative and qualitative results. The overarching research question was: What is the impact of a targeted home visitation program on teacher attitudes, teacher practice, and parent participation in selected urban elementary school classrooms? Subordinate research questions that were investigated were: (a) What is the effect of the home visitation program on teacher attitude towards children's learning and towards parent involvement in selected urban elementary classrooms? (B) how does participation in the program change teacher instructional practice effectiveness in student engagement and teacher-parent interactions in these classrooms? (C) does the program increase a teacher's use of culturally responsive instructional strategies in classrooms? And (d) is there an increase in parent participation in classrooms after a teacher's visitation? The findings from this study indicated that teacher participation in the home visitation program significantly impacted student learning, parent involvement, and the use of cultural responsive strategies. Significant themes that emerged included feelings of empowerment, establishing parent partnerships, understanding of culture, and enhancing parental involvement.
