Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the old aphorism is to be believed, «Spain begins at the Pyrenees». This European and Spanish proclamation of difference or uniqueness is born out, in a sense, but also turned on its head by this collection of essays by an eminent group of American Hispanicists. These articles focus on various aspects of medieval Iberian society, economy, and religion as well as the Peninsula's rich and diverse literature of the era. This essay collection thus provides a valuable introduction to the study of the Spanish «national character», which is indeed unique but rooted in general European traditions.
Book Synopsis Embodying Argentina by : Nancy Hanway
Download or read book Embodying Argentina written by Nancy Hanway and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001 Argentina faced its most serious economic crisis in years. At this turbulent time in Argentina's history, the question "What is argentinidad?" is more important than ever. The symbols of Argentina's national culture that are now revered came about during another time of economic and political unrest in the second half of the nineteenth century and were captured by writers who understood authorship as a political matter. This book examines Argentine literary narratives from 1850 to 1880, including Amalia (1851) by Jose Marmol, Recuerdos de provincia (1850) by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Una excursion a los indios ranqueles (1870) by Lucio V. Mansilla and Martin Fierro (1872, 1879) by Jose Hernandez, and the changing relationship between ideas of citizenship, the body, and national space. The author argues that in each of the literary narratives she discusses, the ideas embodied by the emblematic citizen are articulated clearly in scenes in which the relationship between the gendered body and concepts of nation-space--the spaces, lands or territories where struggles over national identity are represented--comes into play. The work of Rosa Guerra and Eduarda Mansilla de Garcia, who do not have canonical status but were widely read in their time and dealt with the colonial-era myth of the "first" white women held captive by native Argentines, is also explored.

Book Synopsis Stonewall Jackson and Religious Faith in Military Command by : Kenneth E. Hall
Download or read book Stonewall Jackson and Religious Faith in Military Command written by Kenneth E. Hall and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-04-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between war and religion is nothing new. For millennia, humankind has waged war over religion and derived religion from war. It is not surprising, then, that military leadership and religious conviction frequently coincide. This study documents the long tradition of the religious warrior in Western history and literature, with a special focus on Civil War general Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. It also provides a general survey of the religious antecedents of Jackson and other more modern American military heroes. The book begins with an introduction to the Confederate general, largely from the perspective of those who lived with and served under him, whose testimonies attest to his courage, initiative, innate tactical talent, deep religious faith, and eccentric personal habits. The author analyzes the extent to which Jackson's national zeal has elevated him to the status of a religious martyr, remembered today within an epic frame of sainthood and heroism. Concise comparisons are drawn between Jackson and his Old World predecessors, including Ulrich Zwingli, John Knox and Oliver Cromwell. Similar associations are made between Jackson and such Civil War contemporaries as William Dorsey Pender and Oliver Otis Howard. A chapter addressing the representation of "Stonewall" in modern Civil War literature and film, particularly in the novel and subsequent motion picture Gods and Generals, provides an insightful juxtaposition of Jackson's status among the "gods" of the Civil War and his own reverence for the God of his Presbyterian faith.
Book Synopsis Women in the Medieval Spanish Epic and Lyric Traditions by : Lucy A. Sponsler
Download or read book Women in the Medieval Spanish Epic and Lyric Traditions written by Lucy A. Sponsler and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culture of medieval Spain was anything nut homogeneous. It varied not only through time, with the approach of the Renaissance, but also geographically, with great differences between north and south. In this study, author Lucy A. Sponsler illuminates the role of women during this interesting period by exploring their portrayal in literature. Women in the Medieval Spanish Epic and Lyric Traditions examines the various ways in which women were portrayed in the formative years of medieval society, as well as the development of these views as new social mores evolved. Employing a thorough examination of the literature, Sponsler reveals that a high degree of respect was demonstrated toward women in Spanish prose and poetry of this period. Her study sheds new light on the role of women in relation to men, family, and social organization in medieval Spain.

Book Synopsis A Companion to the Poema de mio Cid by :
Download or read book A Companion to the Poema de mio Cid written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a number of distinguished scholars in the field of Poema de mio Cid studies. It provides an informed introduction to key literary aspects of the poem, and thoroughly examines many of the complex issues that are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the work (historical context, ideological motivations, prosification in medieval chronicles, the poem’s place in the canon of Spanish literature). Equally important are the new findings that have been put forward since the 1970s, when scholars started to challenge Ramón Menéndez Pidal’s theories that had dominated the philological discourse since the beginning of the twentieth century. Contributors are Matthew Bailey, Simon Barton, Francisco Bautista, Juan Carlos Bayo Julve, Federico Corriente, Leonardo Funes, Luis Galván, Fernando Gómez Redondo, Eukene Lacarra Lanz, Salvatore Luongo, Georges Martin, Alberto Montaner, Javier Rodríguez Molina, Mercedes Vaquero, Roger Wright, and Irene Zaderenko.
Book Synopsis Practical Horsemanship in Medieval Arthurian Romance by : Anastasija Ropa
Download or read book Practical Horsemanship in Medieval Arthurian Romance written by Anastasija Ropa and published by Trivent Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of a knight on horseback is the emblem of medieval chivalry. Much has been written on the ideology and practicalities of knighthood as portrayed in medieval romance, especially Arthurian romance, and it is surprising that so little attention was hitherto granted to the knight's closest companion, the horse. This study examines the horse as a social indicator, as the knight's animal alter ego in his spiritual peregrinations and earthly adventures, the ups and downs of chivalric adventure, as well as the relations between the lady and her palfrey in romance. Both medieval authors and their audiences knew more about the symbolism and practice of horsemanship than most readers do today. By providing the background to the descriptions of horses and horsemanship in Arthurian romance, this study deepens the readers' appreciation of these texts. At the same time, critical reading of romance supplies information about the ideology and daily practice of horsemanship in the Middle Ages that is otherwise impossible to obtain from other sources, be it archaeology, chronicles or administrative documentation.
