Book excerpt: Collisions of deformed uranium (238U) nuclei are studied using Glauber Monte-Carlo simulations in an effort to elucidate the effects of the non-symmetric rotations of prolate spheroid nucleus geometry and impact parameter. The nucleon density distribution is given by a three parameter Woods-Saxon density function and a Glauber Model is used in a Monte-Carlo simulation of U+U collisions. The number of participant nucleons and number of nucleon-nucleon collisions is determined and compared to the results found for gold using the same model. Simulations of uranium collisions shows that tip to tip U+U collisions increase energy density by 35% while body to body collisions decrease energy density by 10% compared to central Au+Au collisions. It is also shown that a cut on the top 5% of the charged multiplicity density per unit transverse area results in no significant increase or decrease in collision energy density. Finally, plots of predicted Upsilon production values show expected Upsilon production of collisions at various impact parameters and full overlap orientations.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the discussions by renown researchers on questions emerged during transition from the relativistic heavy-ion collider (RHIC) to the future electron ion collider (EIC). Over the past two decades, the RHIC has provided a vast amount of data over a wide range of the center of mass energies. What are the scientific priorities, after RHIC is shut down and turned to the future EIC? What should be the future focuses of the high-energy nuclear collisions? What are thermodynamic properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at large baryon density? Where is the phase boundary between quark-gluon-plasma and hadronic matter at high baryon density? How does one make connections from thermodynamics learned in high-energy nuclear collisions to astrophysical topics, to name few, the inner structure of compact stars, and perhaps more interestingly, the dynamical processes of the merging of neutron stars? While most particle physicists are interested in Dark Matter, we should focus on the issues of Visible Matter! Multiple heavy-ion accelerator complexes are under construction: NICA at JINR (4 ~ 11 GeV), FAIR at GSI (2 ~ 4.9 GeV SIS100), HIAF at IMP (2 ~ 4 GeV). In addition, the heavy-ion collision has been actively discussed at the J-PARC. The book is a collective work of top researchers from the field where some of the above-mentioned basic questions will be addressed. We believe that answering those questions will certainly advance our understanding of the phase transition in early universe as well as its evolution that leads to today's world of nature.

Book excerpt: Au+Au collisions at [square root of] [superscript]s nn = 130 and 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider have opened a new energy regime for studying nucleus-nucleus collisions. A search for the formation of a phase of matter in which quarks and gluons interact strongly over an extended deconfined volume is of primary importance. The PHOBOS detector was constructed to measure many observables at RHIC. The primary subsystem used in this analysis is the PHOBOS spectrometer. The spectrometer is a multiplane silicon pad detector which detects particles traversing its pads as they propagate through a strong magnetic field. The hit positions are used along with energy loss information in the silicon pads to determine both the momentum and velocity of the particles, allowing for the identification of the particle species. One of the most basic pieces of information to be determined is the baryochemical potential of the system. This information has been determined through the measurement of the relative yields of antiparticles to particles in RHIC collisions ... These values are compared to model predictions and are used to evaluate the contribution of baryon transport relative to particle production in determining the yields of baryon at midrapidity in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies.

Book excerpt: At sufficiently high temperatures and densities quarks and gluons exist in a deconfined state called Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). QGP existed in the Universe shortly after the Big Bang, and today is created in accelerator based experiments which collide heavy nuclei at high energies. Results from these experiments point to a hot, dense and strongly interacting state of deconfined quarks and gluons. The study of heavy flavor probes (those originating from $c$ and $b$ quarks) is an active area of research in heavy ion collisions. Heavy quarks are produced in the initial hard scatterings of collisions and thus are sensitive to the entire evolution of the medium. They also potentially have different sensitivity to medium induced energy loss compared to light flavors. This dissertation investigates the interactions of heavy flavor quarks with the medium by studying correlations between electrons from heavy flavor decays and hadrons. At high transverse momentum, the direction of the electron is highly correlated with the direction of the parent heavy flavor meson. We look for evidence of energy loss in the QGP as well as jet induced effects on the medium. We present electron-hadron correlations from Au+Au collisions in a wide range of centrality bins as well as correlations from p+p. The datasets used are the best currently available due to high statistics and low material in the detector. We also investigate the dependence on the orientation of the trigger particle to the event plane to look for path length dependent effects on the correlation as well as non-flow contributions to electron electron $v_2$.

Book excerpt: Recent data from RHIC suggest novel nuclear effects in the production of high p{sub T} hadrons. We present results from the STAR detector on high p{sub T} angular correlations in Au+Au and p+p collisions at (square root)S = 200 GeV/c. These two-particle angular correlation measurements verify the presence of a partonic hard scattering and fragmentation component at high p{sub T} in both central and peripheral Au+Au collisions. When triggering on a leading hadron with p{sub T}>4 GeV, we observe a quantitative agreement between the jet cone properties in p+p and all centralities of Au+Au collisions. This quantitative agreement indicates that nearly all hadrons with p{sub T}>4 GeV/c come from jet fragmentation and that jet fragmentation properties are not substantially modified in Au+Au collisions. STAR has also measured the strength of back-to-back high p{sub T} charged hadron correlations, and observes a small suppression of the back-to-back correlation strength in peripheral collisions, and a nearly complete disappearance o f back-to-back correlations in central Au+Au events. These phenomena, together with the observed strong suppression of inclusive yields and large value of elliptic flow at high p{sub T}, are consistent with a model where high p{sub T} hadrons come from partons created near the surface of the collision region, and where partons that originate or propagate towards the center of the collision region are substantially slowed or completely absorbed.

Book excerpt: At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), Long Island, NY, the main goal of research into heavy-ion collisions has been to understand Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) in conditions of extreme temperature and energy density. At ordinary temperatures, the quarks and gluons are confined within particles like protons and neutrons, but at very high temperatures and densities, a new deconfined phase of quarks and gluons is created. This new phase is known as Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP).Quarks with the quantum numbers "charm" and "bottom" are relatively massive and are produced only rarely, and this category is called heavy flavor. Heavy-flavor measurements deepen our understanding of the properties and nature of the excited QGP state. Heavy-flavor particles are unique probes for studies of the hot and dense QGP medium created in high-energy collisions, as they are produced early in the evolution of the collision.STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC) is now the last operational detector at the RHIC facility, and was constructed and is operated by a large international collaboration. The STAR collaboration is composed of 68 institutions from 14 countries, with a total of 743 collaborators. In 2014, STAR employed a new silicon pixel technology detector named the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT). The HFT has separate layers of silicon to guide tracks reconstructed in the main tracking detector of STAR (the Time Projection Chamber) down to a spatial resolution of around 30 [mu]m in the region near the center of STAR where the collisions occur, which allows particles with very short lifetimes (notably heavy flavor particles) to be identified. In this dissertation, I use the HFT to measure particles with the charm quantum number. This work also involves using a pair of calorimeter detectors at a polar angle of zero degrees to estimate the azimuthal angle of the reaction plane in each collision. About 2.2 billion collisions are in the dataset being studied. These measurements allow the azimuthal anisotropy (flow) of charmed particles to be studied. The results are compared to similar studies involving light quarks and the predictions of several theoretical models. My results show a surprisingly large first Fourier harmonic in the anisotropy for particles with charm compared with particles with lighter flavors (strange, up, down). Specifically, the signal for charm is about 30 times larger, and no model comes anywhere close to predicting this pattern.

In the second year of RHIC running, design energy was achieved in the collisions of both Au+Au ions and proton+proton reactions. The production of the J/psi is measured by the PHENIX experiment in Au+Au collisions as well as in proton-proton collisions. The scientific goal is to investigate the nature of hot, dense nuclear matter capitalizing on the unique properties of the J/psi as a probe of this matter. Recent experimental results by the NA50 collaboration at CERN strongly deviate from the conventional picture that successfully describes data at lower energies. The importance of such a measurement is demonstrated by the wide spectrum of theoretical explanations concerning the existing data. The merits of these models will be explored in a systematic and comprehensive study of the J/psi and open charm in collisions of a variety of species and energy. A survey of the theoretical models is presented and the relevant open charm and J/psi PHENIX measurements are compared.

Book excerpt: Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of the strong interaction between quarks and gluons, predicts that at extreme conditions of high temperature and/or density, quarks and gluons are no longer confined within individual hadrons. This new deconfined state of quarks and gluons is called Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). The Universe was in this QGP state a few microseconds after the Big Bang. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) on Long Island, NY was built to create and study the properties of QGP.Due to their heavy masses, quarks with heavy flavor (charm and bottom) are mainly created during the early, energetic stages of the collisions. Heavy flavor is considered to be a unique probe for QGP studies, since it propagates through all phases of a collision, and is affected by the hot and dense medium throughout its evolution. Initial studies, via indirect reconstruction of heavy flavor using their decay electrons, indicated a much higher energy loss by these quarks compared to model predictions, with a magnitude comparable to that of light quarks. Mesons such as D0 could provide information about the interaction of heavy quarks with the surrounding medium through measurements such as elliptic flow. Such data help constrain the transport parameters of the QGP medium and reveal its degree of thermalization.Because heavy hadrons have a low production yield and short lifetime (e.g. ct = 120μm for D0), it is very challenging to obtain accurate measurements of open heavy flavor in heavy-ion collisions, especially since the collisions also produce large quantities of light-flavor particles. Also due to their short lifetime, it is difficult to distinguish heavy-flavor decay vertices from the primary collision vertex; one needs a very high precision vertex detector in order to separate and reconstruct the decay of the heavy flavor particles in the presence of thousands of other particles produced in each collision. The STAR collaboration built a new micro-vertex detector and installed it in the experiment in 2014. This state-of-the-art silicon pixel technology is named the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT). The HFT was designed in order to perform direct topological reconstruction of the weak decay products from hadrons that include a heavy quark. The HFT consists of four layers of silicon, and it improves the track pointing resolution of the STAR experiment from a few mm to around 30 ℗æm for charged pions at a momentum of 1 GeV/c.In this dissertation, I focus on one of the main goals of the HFT detector, which is to study the elliptic flow v2 (a type of azimuthal anisotropy) for D0 mesons in Au+Au collisions at vsNN = 200 GeV. My analysis is based on the 2014 data set (about 1.2 billion collisions covering all impact parameters) that include data from the HFT detector. There are two new and unique analysis elements used in this dissertation. First, I performed the analysis using a Kalman filter algorithm to reconstruct the charmed-meson candidates. The standard reconstruction is via a simple helix-swim method. The advantage of using the Kalman algorithm is in the use of the full error matrix of each track in the vertex estimation and reconstruction of the properties of the heavy-flavor parent particle. Second, I also used the Tool for Multivariate Analysis (TMVA), a ROOT-environment tool, to its full potential for signal significance optimization, instead of the previous approach based on a set of fixed cuts for separating signal from background. This dissertation presents the elliptic component (v2) of azimuthal anisotropy of D0 mesons as a function of transverse momentum, pT . The centrality (impact parameter) dependence of D0 v2(pT) is also studied. Results are compared with similar studies involving light quarks, and with the predictions of several theoretical models.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predictions of elliptic flow (v2) and nuclear modification factor (R{sub AA}) are provided as a function of centrality in U + U collisions at (square root)s{sub NN} = 200 GeV. Since the 238U nucleus is naturally deformed, one could adjust the properties of the fireball, density and duration of the hot and dense system, for example, in high energy nuclear collisions by carefully selecting the colliding geometry. Within our Monte Carlo Glauber based approach, the v2 with respect to the reaction plane v2{sup RP} in U + U collisions is consistent with that in Au + Au collisions, while the v2 with respect to the participant plane v2{sup PP} increases (almost equal to)30-60% at top 10% centrality which is attributed to the larger participant eccentricity at most central U + U collisions. The suppression of R{sub AA} increases and reaches (almost equal to)0.1 at most central U + U collisions that is by a factor of 2 more suppression compared to the central Au + Au collisions due to large size and deformation of Uranium nucleus.
