Book Synopsis Noise Pollution by : Clifford R. Bragdon
Download or read book Noise Pollution written by Clifford R. Bragdon and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this handbook on a growing public menace, Clifford R. Bragdon applies acoustical engineering and social science to the least understood—yet one of the most serious—environmental hazards of modern society. This book is a precision tool; it gives facts and figures, precise scientific measurements, and accurate data on what noise is, what it does, and how to combat it. The author pinpoints the noise levels—many of them illegal—of automobiles, buses, subways, airplanes, household appliances, and children's toys in numerous charts and tables and relates these data to the measurable social, physical, and psychological damage they do to human beings. He catalogues the "noise-free" claims of manufacturers of these products in an Appendix that speaks for itself. A thorough case study of an area near Philadelphia International Airport and other townships, including five hundred households, the author evaluates existing noise abatement programs on local, state, and federal levels, and finds most of them seriously inadequate. As steps toward the solution to the noise crisis, he proposes a system for rating environmental health, new approaches to community noise management, and a variety of architectural suggestions. The bibliography—probably the most complete and up-to-date source collection on the subject ever assembled—is an invaluable reference work in itself. It lists over five hundred sources, arranged in six major categories: Noise, General; Physical Effects; Psycho-Social Effects; Law; Noise Abatement; and Noise Sources. Noise Pollution is indispensable not only for the concerned citizen but for all those who can, and must, take immediate and effective action in our unquiet crisis: urban planners, architects, hospital administrators, public health officials, transportation executives, lawyers, realtors, sound engineers, manufacturers of transportation equipment and household appliances, and community leaders. It is a vital resource in dealing with the noise crisis that is destroying pleasure, lowering work performance, eroding health, causing physical injury, and even challenging basic human survival.
Book Synopsis A Study of the Magnitude of Transportation Noise Generation and Potential Abatement. Volume II. Measurement Criterion by : SERENDIPITY INC ARLINGTON VA EASTERN OPERATIONS DIV.
Download or read book A Study of the Magnitude of Transportation Noise Generation and Potential Abatement. Volume II. Measurement Criterion written by SERENDIPITY INC ARLINGTON VA EASTERN OPERATIONS DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluations of the effectiveness of transportation noise abatement require the use of a measure which relates individual and community reactions to transportation noise. Previous studies were examined to determine how well various measures predicted response to noise. A-weighted Sound Level (in dBA) and Noise Pollution Level (in dBA) were examined to determine their relationships to other measures and their prediction of reaction, i.e., loudness, annoyance, noisiness. The A-weighted sound level, on the average, correlated as well with subjective response as the other measures. Only for jet aircraft pure tones was there a significant predictive performance difference between Effective Perceived Noise Level (EPNL) and dBA, favoring EPNL. Average community response measures were developed for aircraft and motor vehicle noise. Using the aircraft Noise and Number Index and motor vehicle Traffic Noise Index data, the Noise Pollution Level was shown to correlate as well with average community response as both of the measures. Since Noise Pollution Level is compatible with the use of dBA for individual vehicles, its selection as a community measure complements the choice of dBA as a vehicle measure. (Author).

Book Synopsis Mitigation of Nighttime Construction Noise, Vibrations, and Other Nuisances by : Cliff J. Schexnayder
Download or read book Mitigation of Nighttime Construction Noise, Vibrations, and Other Nuisances written by Cliff J. Schexnayder and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report describes current practice in mitigating nighttime construction nuisances such as noise, vibration, light, and dust. Roadway construction work is increasingly done at night to mediate traffic congestion; however, this trend also increases the potential for disturbing adjacent property owners. This report will be of interest to department of transportation (DOT) construction, design, and project engineers, and to those responsible for community relations. This report of the Transportation Research Board stresses the importance of informing project neighbors and establishing cooperative relations with the community as a first measure of successful mitigation. Examples show how project design can address construction nuisances by locating and sequencing construction operations to minimize their impact. Current practices used in source control, path control, and receptor control are described and documented in examples from the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel project and projects in Arizona and Salt Lake City, Utah. Appended materials provide sample specifications for mitigation of noise and dust control.
