Book Synopsis Mozart's Symphonies by : Neal Zaslaw
Download or read book Mozart's Symphonies written by Neal Zaslaw and published by Oxford : Clarendon Press ; Toronto : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mozart's symphonies have received rather less critical attention than his operas and piano concertos, and this book is the first serious attempt in any language to survey the entire panorama of his symphonic works. Accounting for every symphony associated with Mozart involves the identification and evaluation of nearly 100 symphonies. Professor Zaslaw places each symphony in its mu-sical and cultural context, and addresses such questions as how and why the symphonies were written, how they were disseminated, who paid for them, who played them, who listened to them, and what those involved thought of them. The role of the symphony in Mozart's creative life and his contribution to the genre are also examined. An important element of the book is the consideration given to what is known about how Mozart's symphonies and those of his contemporaries were per-formed. An entire chapter is devoted to the whole question of orchestral perform-ance practice in the eighteenth century, and information that might clarify the nature of the performances documented is given throughout the book. Although Mozart's Symphonies is neither a biography as conventionally understood nor a study in musical analysis or criticism, those interested in Mozart's life and the music itself will find here much that is new in the way of fact and interpretation."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three volumes of The Masterwork in Music present complete English translations of major works by Austrian music theorist Heinrich Schenker, one of the twentieth century's leading figures in the field. First published in German between 1925 and 1930, these essays represent Schenker's greatest writings in analysis prior to the 1935 definitive formulation of his theory of music in Der freie Satz (Free Composition). This new publication of the long-awaited English translation, which first appeared in the distinguished Cambridge University Press edition, provides a valuable resource for scholars. Editorial annotations and elucidations by Dr. William Drabkin and his translators offer additional insights. This volume features a major essay on Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor; studies of Bach keyboard and solo cello pieces; works by Haydn and Reger; theoretical writings on sonata form and fugue; and many examples of Schenkerian theory. Volume One includes analyses of keyboard works by Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin, Beethoven, and Handel and solo violin music by Bach, along with studies of other works. Volume Three's contents include Schenker's celebrated analysis of Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony and other works.

Book excerpt: The studies collected in this volume deal with the interpretation of opera. In most cases the results are based on structural analysis, a concept which may require some clarification in this context. During the past de cade 'structure' and 'structural' have become particularly fashionable terms lacking exact denotation and used for the most divergent purposes. As employed here, structural analysis is concerned with such concepts as 'relationship', 'coherence' and 'continuity', more or less in contrast to formal analysis which deals with measurable material. In other words, I have analysed the structure of an opera by seeking and examining factors in the musico-dramatic process, whereas analysts of form are generally preoccupied with the study of elements contained in the musical object. Though admittedly artificial, the dichotomy of form and structure may elucidate the present situation with regard to the study of opera. Today, nearly one hundred years after the death of Wagner, the proclaimed anti thesis of Oper und Drama is generally taken for what it really was: a means to propagate the philosophy of its inventor. The conception of opera (whether 'continuous' or composed of 'numbers') as a special form of drama is no longer contested. Nevertheless musical scholarship has failed to draw the consequences from this view and few scholars realize the need to study general theory of drama and more specifically the dramatic experience.
Download or read book Life of Mozart written by Otto Jahn and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 1286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life of Mozart in three volumes is a biography of famous Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart written for the centenary of his birth. It was written by German scholar Otto Jahn who collected the written sources on the life of the composer for the first time and evaluated them using philological methods. The book is basically an Encyclopedia of musical art and biography. It presents, not only the narrative of Mozart's life in the smallest details, with a thorough examination of each work, but it also deals with the rise and progress of each branch of music that Mozart touched. Jahn also provides a detailed account of the social and musical state of the numerous cities visited by Mozart, such as Paris, Munich, and Vienna, and biographical sketches of people in Mozart's life. Jahn's biography of Mozart is of great importance for musicology and remains fundamental to Mozart research.
