Book excerpt: This study examined whether or not students that participated in a school sponsored instrumental music program had higher academic achievement and attendance than students that did not participate in a school sponsor instrumental music program. Units of measurement included standardized test scores and attendance, without taking into consideration variables such as gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. This study concentrated on participants from three middle schools (6-8) and three high schools (9-12) in Baltimore County, Maryland. Data were gathered on Maryland School Assessment (MSA) and Maryland High School Assessment (HSA) scores and federally reported school attendance rates were accessed based on the 2007-2008 school year. Four research questions were investigated and six null hypotheses were tested at the .05 level of significance. Independent samples t -tests were used to compare enrollment in instrumental music classes to student's academic achievement and attendance rate. There were statistically significant differences among the high school students enrolled in an instrumental music class and those that were not enrolled in instrumental music class on the English and algebra sections of the HSA, and in the attendance rates. The HSA scores of the students that were enrolled in an instrumental music class were significantly higher on both sections of the test. They also had significantly higher attendance rates than the students that were not enrolled in an instrumental music class. These findings suggest the high school students that participate in a school sponsored instrumental music program have higher academic achievement and attendance rates than high school students that do not participate in a school sponsored instrumental music program. The results of data analysis showed that in middle school there were no statistically significant differences among the students from the three middle schools that were enrolled in an instrumental music class and the middle school students that were not enrolled in an instrumental music class on the reading and mathematics sections of the MSA or in attendance rates. These findings suggest that participation in an instrumental music class on the middle school level had no significant impact on student achievement or attendance.

A West Phoenix, inner city school was studied were the majority of students are Hispanic and qualify for free and reduced lunch. The main purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the effects of instrumental music courses on the AZmerit assessment scores. AZMerit is a standardized assessment used to measure student growth during the given timeframe of one school year (AIMS A Science, n.d.). In this study, I compared a cohort of instrumental music students who studied performance against a cohort of comparable students who did not volunteer to participate in an instrumental music program. Many of these students are bilingual in English and Spanish. As such, students were divided into subcategories based on their level of language acquisition in sixth grade. The secondary purpose of this study was to determine if being a part of an instrumental music program affected students at different languages levels in different manners. Over a two-year period, the English Language Learners (ELL) students were examined to determine the effects of music education by focusing a large part of this research on ELL students' success within music education programs and academic content areas.

Many studies (mostly correlational research) suggest that music performance can impact student achievement and social environment. Much of the research has evaluated instrumental music performance and student achievement from a quantitative/statistical standpoint using student test scores and college admission records. This study investigated the underrepresented perspective of students in regards to the impact of instrumental performance on student achievement and social environment. The aim was to find out why students continue to enroll in instrumental performance classes. A survey was conducted with participants from four high school advanced music classes (156 students). From two of the surveyed classes, two small student groups were selected for interviews. The small groups were randomly selected from a group of students who had a minimum of five years of instrumental performance experience. The initial findings of the survey and interviews revealed that instrumental music performance is positively correlated with student achievement and social environment. More research is needed to explore student perspectives to account for student instrumental experience and/or gender. Public and private schools are recommended to invest heavily in their music programs, as music performance is a conduit for student achievement. Moreover, with the advances in technology and recent findings from studies in neuroscience, instrumental performance has been shown to have beneficial effects on the brain and neuro-functioning.

Yet many districts elect to eliminate these programs in times of budgetary crisis. During a period when our national education system is focused on test scores, educational reformists should focus on the implementation of courses that yield academic success. This study was designed to determine if there is a significant relationship between instrumental music class participation and Advanced Placement English Language and Composition exam scores. Data for the group comparison consisted of 529 samples from a large county school district in the upstate of South Carolina. Participants include Advanced Placement English Language and Composition course students and both instrumental music participants and non-instrumental music participants from the Parkwood County School District. The data gained from this study revealed that there is no significant relationship between Advanced Placement English Language and Composition exam scores and participation in instrumental music classes. This data was gathered through the use of three independent t-tests that sought to find a relationship between Advanced Placement English Language and Composition exam scores, instrumental music course participation, and the gender of the participants. Suggestions for further research are included.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to (1) examine the academic and demographic characteristics of 6th-grade instrumental music students attending selected public schools of contrasting socioeconomic backgrounds, (2) examine the retention patterns of students who were required to enroll in 6th-grade instrumental music compared to those who elected to do so, and (3) construct a predictive model of student retention in middle school instrumental music programs. Individual student data (N = 1052) were gathered from beginning instrumental 6th-grade programs at selected schools in a large, urban school district in Texas. Data included students' 5th and 6th standardized test results, 7th-grade class schedules, and demographic information. Data were analyzed according to the 6th-grade campus the students attended (Title I/non-Title I) and the type of school (elementary school with required music programs or middle school with elective music programs) to identify demographic and academic factors associated with 6th-and 7th-grade music participation. I examined students' schedules for retention patterns associated with individual school scheduling and academic remedial policies. I used logistic regression to develop predictive models of retention based on the following factors: gender, ethnicity, special education, at-risk, gifted, 5th and 6th-grade standardized test results, 5th-grade campus and pre-AP enrollment. Only the 6th-grade standardized tests, either math or reading, predicted retention in instrumental music in all of the school settings. Ethnicity, at-risk, and 5th-grade standardized tests did not predict retention in any school setting. Each school setting was unique in the factors that predicted instrumental music retention. For example, in the Title I setting, giftedness and 6th-grade reading test results predicted retention whereas in the non-Title I setting, gender, pre-AP enrollment and 6th-grade math results predicted retention. I also observed that 6th-grade required music programs were, by default, more inclusive than elective programs, and that the diversity in the student population of the 6th-grade required programs was maintained during the 7th-grade when music became elective. Results from this study suggest that offering only one elective choice per year may exclude access to music education for low academic achievers and reduce enrollment in music ensembles.

Book excerpt: During the past decade urban American schools saw a decline in music programs due to value-based decisions favoring investment in subjects with high stakes testing. At the same time advances in neuroscience research point to a link between playing a musical instrument and increased literacy skills. The purpose of this case study was to understand how playing a musical instrument for five consecutive years relates to measures of literacy achievement for urban middle school students. Furthermore, how the perceptions and beliefs of educators about this relationship affect their value-based decisions was explored. The findings indicate that in seven out of eight independent t-tests of eighth grade scores from the 2014 English Language Arts MCAS exam, a statistically significant difference was found suggesting that instrumental students outscore their non-instrumental peers. Focus groups of administrators, music educators and English Language Arts educators were conducted separately and findings yielded nine major themes relating to educators' perceptions, beliefs and values. They indicate that educators have a belief system that is built on personal experiences and research. Across all three focus groups the belief was expressed that students who study a musical instrument have higher achievement on measures of literacy. This belief paired with the parallel belief that band builds skills for success, guided educators to advocate for decisions that allocate resources to increase opportunity for instrumental instruction in the studied district. Recommendations for practice include increasing opportunity for sequential instrumental instruction in urban public schools and convening small discussion groups of educators, parents or other to discuss perceptions, beliefs and values..

Book excerpt: Gaps in achievement test scores continue to exist in students depending upon race, gender, income, and ethnicity according to the Center on Education Policy (CEP), an advocate for public schools. School districts and schools are struggling to close the achievement gap that exists. In the 2010-2011 school years, 34.4% of African American students in the third grade failed to pass the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in the research school. The participants in this study were enrolled in a Title I elementary school located in south east Georgia. The school system was comprised of one comprehensive high school (grades 9 through 12), one middle school (grades 4 through 8), two elementary schools, and one alternative school. The school district served approximately 1,689 students with 144 employees. Mathematics-related music did not have a significant effect on basic mathematics fact fluency. GRASP Mathematic Computational Fluency pre and posttest results were used to determine if there was academic growth for the treatment group when compared to the control group. According to the results from the study, mathematics-related music was not a valid intervention. The students in Group B who participated in the intervention did not make significant gains when comparing their pre (M = 21.95, SD = 7.62) and posttest (M = 23.89, SD = 8.23) scores to the control groups pre (M = 18.84, SD = 8.96) and posttest (M = 20.53, SD = 8.62) scores. Fourteen students in Group B only slightly improved their achievement scores while three students' scores decreased, and two students' scores stayed the same. In Group A, 15 students increased their achievement scores, while three students' scores decreased, and one student's score remained the same. To determine the effect size of mathematics-related music on students' basic mathematic fluency scores, Cohen's d calculations indicated the intervention had a medium effect (d = 0.41) on Mathematic Computational Fluency scores. An average student in the treatment group would be expected to outscore about 66% of the students in the control group. Mathematics-related music increased scores approximately 16%. The hypothesis was that students who participate in an instrumental music program will display increased levels of achievement, and that this relationship will be more pronounced among students who receive free and reduced lunches. Participants in this study were 320 students in grades 5 and 6 from an intermediate school in a rural south central Kansas school district. Students ranged in age from 10-12 years. A total of 172 fifth grade students and 148 sixth grade students participated. The Two-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was the main analytical method employed in this study. Separate ANOVAs were conducted for each of the two dependent measures, reading and mathematics, subscales of the Kansas State Assessment, for both grade levels with music status and lunch status as factors. Some of the findings from this study are consistent with previous research. Results show were no significant interactions found between instrumental music status and lunch status in any of the four ANOVAs. A statistically significant relationship was found between sixth grade instrumental music participation and reading scores, as well as sixth grade instrumental music participation and math scores. These results suggest that duration (i.e., months of instruction) in instrumental music class may be important to increases in academic achievement. Also consistent with previous research, fifth grade results showed a statistically significant relationship between lunch status and reading scores as well as lunch status and mathematics scores; free and reduced lunch students scored significantly lower than their peers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the policy implications allowing administrators to exempt a student from required arts instruction if the student obtained unsatisfactory scores on the high-stake state mandated tests in English and mathematics. This study examined English language arts and math test scores for 37,222 eighth grade students enrolled in music and/or visual arts classes and those students not enrolled in arts courses. There were more than 12,000 students who were eligible, but not enrolled in arts courses. Methodology consisted of comparing the mean scores of students receiving music and visual arts instruction with the mean scores of students excluded from this instruction. The sample consisted of all non-special education students who took the statewide assessment spring 2008 in public schools. Students enrolled in music had significantly higher mean scores than those not enrolled in music where (p less than 0.001). Music enrollment was a positive predictor of academic achievement. Results for visual arts and dual arts were not as conclusive. The study found a lack of evidence supporting the exclusion of students from required arts instruction for the purpose of increasing test scores in English and math. The conclusions were that students enrolled in music perform significantly better; there is an access gap; and arts should be included in the curriculum of all middle school students. More study is required for visual arts, dual arts study, as well as, dance and theatre effects. Future research is required as to academic effectiveness of remediation implemented during the instructional day, thereby denying arts instruction to students. School Performance Scores must reflect all components of the curriculum to be valid. Instructional time in the arts must be enforced if all students are to receive a whole, effective, and relevant education. The practice of recommending more time in English and math in lieu of music for students should be reexamined. Administrators should construct schedules, including appropriate attention, so that all students receive a balanced whole education.
