Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depending on the mechanism of particle production, the resultant particle size and velocity distribution may range over several orders of magnitude. In general, if particle size information is desired from a given type generator, one must resort to some form of experimental determination of the distribution. If the source of particle production is a dynamic one involving a reasonable volume, holography provides a tailor-made particle size and velocity distribution detector. This is evidenced by the fact that holography allows the entire volume to be recorded on one exposure without any interference with the volume of interest. Herein lies a very important characteristic of the holographic particle detection technique: It provides a holographic nondestructive testing technique in the fullest sense of the definition of nondestructive testing. This report provides a description of three different systems useful in this technique and includes the experimental results from one of the holographic systems which was used to detect particle size and velocity distribution from the Skylab waste tank.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a thorough and systematic description of the entire subject of particle field holography. The use of holography to study very small objects in a dynamic volume is a technique of importance for scientists and engineers across a variety of disciplines for obtaining information about the size, shape and velocity of small objects, such as dust particles, fuel droplets, raindrops, pollen, and bubbles. Professor Vikram has made major contributions to the field, and here provides a coherent, comprehensive and self-contained treatment of the theory, practice and applications. The volume is written to satisfy the needs of researchers in the technique, practicing engineers dealing with applications, and advanced students in science or engineering departments. All the necessary mathematical formulations, figures and photographs, experimental procedures and results, and literature citations are therefore included.

Book excerpt: Optical Holography deals with the use of optical holography to solve technical problems, with emphasis on the properties of holograms formed with visible light. Topics covered include the Fourier transform, propagation and diffraction, pulsed-laser holography, and optical systems with spherical lenses. A geometric analysis of point-source holograms is also presented, and holograms and hologram spatial filters formed with spatially modulated reference waves are described. This book is comprised of 20 chapters and begins with an introduction to concepts that are basic to understanding holography, from interference patterns and diffraction to hologram formation, basic holography equations, and partial coherence. The next chapter focuses on early developments in holography, paying particular attention to Bragg's X-ray microscope, X-ray holography, and the beginnings of optical holography. The discussion then turns to light sources for hologram formation; analysis of plane holograms; diffraction from volume holograms; and real-image applications of holographic methods. The remaining chapters explore holographic interferometry, color holography, and computer-generated holograms. The final chapter deals with hologram replication, television transmission of holograms, and formation of holograms using spatially incoherent subject light. This monograph will be a useful resource for electron microscopists, electrical engineers, opticists, physicists, chemists, and others interested in optical holography.

Book excerpt: This book presents a self-contained treatment of the principles, techniques and applications of optical holography, with particular emphasis on recent developments. The first part deals with the theory of holographic imaging, the characteristics of the reconstructed image and the different types of holograms. The next section covers the practical aspects of holography - optical systems, light sources and recording media - as well as the production of holograms for display, colour holography and computer-generated holograms. Finally, there is a detailed description of the most important applications of holography. These include particle-size analysis, high-resolution imaging, holographic optical elements and information storage and processing, as well as holographic interferometry and its use in stress analysis, vibration studies and contouring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book series on Optical Sciences, holography has been the subject of three previous volumes. In particular, Vol. 16, written by one of us (W. S. ) and Dr. M. Dubas, treated holographic interferometry of opaque bodies from the standpoint of deformation analysis. However, the fundamental principles of holography are developed there only briefly in preparation for a discussion of interference fringe modifications. This new volume in the series is intended to consider in detail many topics which were previously omitted, such as the deformation or distortion of holo graphic images, the theory of volume holograms, composite or multiplex holo graphy, holographic interferometry of transparent media, time dependent effects, holographic contouring, and applications of fringe modifications to the deformation of opaque bodies. In addition, these and other subjects will be treated with the same unifying concept developed in Vol. 16, but with an addi tional emphasis on those features that have their origins in classical optics, espe cially the small-wavelength approach, the coupled-wave theory, and the Seidel aberrations. Since the field of holography and its various applications is growing rapidly, it is impossible to be comprehensive in a single book. Every effort has beep. made to avoid unnecessary duplication of Vol. 16. For example, displace ment and fringe localization problems are only briefly discussed, while some modification techniques (e. g. , sandwich holography) are not included. When needed, however, the reader is directly referred to complementary publications.

Book excerpt: A complete description of holography is provided, both for the time-dependent case of moving scene holography and for the time-independent case of stationary holography. Further, a specific holographic arrangement is proposed for application to the detection of particle size distribution in an atmospheric simulation cloud chamber. In this chamber particle growth rate is investigated; therefore, the proposed holographic system must capture continuous particle motion in real time. Such a system is described.

Book excerpt: The only all-inclusive treatment of holography—from fundamental principles to the most advanced concepts While several existing texts cover different aspects of the field of holography, none provides a complete, up-to-date, and accessible view of its popular, scientific, and engineering aspects. Now, from an author team that includes one of the world's pioneers in the field, Holographic Imaging fills this need with a single, comprehensive text that covers the subject from traditional holography to the cutting-edge development of the world's most advanced three-dimensional holographic images, holographic printing, and holographic video. Written in an engaging and easy-to-follow style, Holographic Imaging promotes a hands-on approach to making holograms and provides readers with a working understanding of how and why they work. Following a brief introduction to the fundamentals of light and diffraction, coverage includes: the diffraction efficiency of gratings, "platonic" holography, a ray-tracing analysis of holography, holographic lenses and in-line "Gabor" holography, off-axis "Leith & Upatnieks" holography, non-laser illumination of holograms, phase conjunction and real image projection, full-aperture transfer holography, white-light transmission "rainbow" holography, practical issues in rainbow holography, in-line "Denisyuk" reflection holography, off-axis reflection holography, edge-lit holography, computational display holography, holographic printing, and holographic television. Helpful diagrams and equations that summarize the mathematical and physical principles for each technique discussed make this an approachable resource for readers from a variety of backgrounds, including undergraduate and postgraduate students with an interest in optics, optoelectronics, and information display, as well as researchers, scientists, engineers, and technology-savvy artists.
