Book excerpt: This book examines fundraising engagement and the university advancement and development professionals who make it happen at public regional universities in the United States. These institutions are disproportionately under-resourced by state and federal subsidies, and private fundraising has become increasingly relied upon by students attending these institutions while the actual fundraising departments remain understaffed, overworked, and struggling to capture the imaginations of private donors and corporate and family foundations. The book focuses on how advancement professionals at these institutions across the nation have overcome the aforementioned challenges to attain support for their universities unchanging missions in these ever-changing times—to educate a critical mass of United States’ future citizens, workforce, and leaders while providing a socioeconomic ladder to its most vulnerable students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes case studies of comprehensive campaigns at eight varied institutions of higher education. In each case, a campaign was part of an institutional strategy for growth and change. Many of the campaigns marked a turning point in the institution’s history. They are not just stories about campaigns, they are examples of institutional strategies for growth and change. The case studies include widely varied institutions: a relatively young private university campaigning to enhance its research standing; a distinguished private university moving beyond near-destruction to pursue bold goals; a prestigious public university aiming to sustain momentum in its third century; a public university raising funds to enhance its own programs and bring economic rejuvenation to its region; a public university focused on the economic mobility of its diverse students and undertaking its first campaign; a unique liberal arts college turning to philanthropy to implement an innovative new financial model; a distinguished historically Black college for women seeking resources to continue and increase its excellence; and a community college raising funds to help address urgent economic and social priorities of the city and county that it serves. Their campaign goals ranged from $40 million to $5 billion!

Book excerpt: In a world of uncertainties, particularly in higher education, one thing is certain: fundraising is vital to the operation, and even survival, of universities-private and public. Higher education leaders realize tuition revenue and legislative support alone will not build a great university, and only through private gift support can substantial endowments be built and scholarships provided for students, endowed faculty chairs and professorships created, and capital support to maintain bricks and mortar-not to mention the importance of annual giving which can provide unrestricted support for an institution. Private gift support is essential for any organization to advance in today's highly constrained resource environment. The case method of study has been around since the time of Cicero and can be in contrast to other teaching methods. These cases do not have 'right' and 'wrong' answers or easy solutions. They present team members and students with an opportunity to explore multiple avenues under difficult circumstances. The cases in this book are complex and difficult, and team members and students will need plenty of questioning to absorb the complexities and nuances of each case. Stovall and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine presidents' approaches to fundraising at four-year historically black colleges and universities. The study also explored presidential leadership and how it informs presidents' fundraising efforts. Both private and public institutions were represented in this study. Religious and non-religious affiliated colleges and universities were representative of private institutions. Institutional types for public institutions were land-grant and urban, comprehensive. This study employed a qualitative research method to gather data from the participating institutional leaders. A case study design and qualitative analytic procedures were utilized to derive meaning from collected data. Triangulation was used to retrieve data from various sources. Data sources consisted of semi-structured interviews, observations and documents. Four case studies were used for this study. The qualitative methodology of purposive sampling was utilized to select institutional leaders. Institutional leaders were selected from four-year historically black colleges and universities located in the Southeastern region of the United States. The Southeastern region of the United States was selected due to its high concentration of four-year historically black colleges and universities. Additionally, this study was guided by three research questions that centered on the approaches, role as institutional leader and leadership characteristics of presidents regarding fundraising at four-year, private and public historically black colleges and universities. There were variations among presidents in their approaches to fundraising. For the president of Lee University, fundraising was approached through the means of various types of campaigns. They were: traditional, continuing and interim. The use of each campaign was determined by specific institutional needs. The president of Monroe University approached fundraising from an individualistic perspective. He believed that major gift fundraising should be, solely, the responsibility of the institutional leader. There were similarities in the approach to fundraising for presidents of Verona and Wren Universities. They employed a more inclusive approach based on the notion that everyone is a fundraiser. There was a consensus in regard to the role of institutional leader in fundraising among presidents. Overall, there was unanimity in the belief that presidential leadership is essential to the success of fundraising. Furthermore, each president's perspective on the role as leader suggested that a president's ability to effectively articulate his or her institutional vision was also a shared belief. All four presidents exhibited a different leadership characteristic in relation to institutional fundraising. They were: situational (Lee University), authoritarian (Monroe University), democratic (Verona University), and charismatic (Wren University). Moreover, these varying leadership characteristics were reflective of each president's overall style of leadership.
