Unfortunately, many have not successfully reached their goal, which in turn has affected retention rates of colleges and universities. There are programs that provide academic support and advising to increase retention for first-generation college students. However, there are academic and nonacademic needs of the students that colleges, universities, and public policymakers have neglected to address. -- The purpose of this research study was to determine from 168 first-generation college students at 5 participating institutions, what factors impacted their enrollment after their first year in college. Tinto's Interactionalist Theory (1982) served as the study's theoretical foundation. Findings warranted the following conclusions: the academic factors that motivated first-generation students to enroll the subsequent year were having a positive rapport with faculty and staff, personal goal of degree completion, and support services provided by the institution. Data analysis revealed that the non-academic factors that motivated first-generation students to enroll the subsequent year were: family, peers, and a sense of community on campus. -- This research provides data for Student Support Services (SSS) programs in reference to services their eligible freshman participants deem necessary in order to enroll in college the subsequent year. This information can be used by the programs to evaluate the services currently provided to participants and to focus and build upon those areas most addressed by the students in this study. Public and private postsecondary institutions alike may also use the findings to further enhance current support programs as well as develop new initiatives to work towards increasing their student retention rates, while parents, high schools, and pre-college programs can use the information gathered to assist with preparing students for college, thus providing measures working toward increasing college enrollment, attrition, and graduation rates.

Although in many ways American higher education has fulfilled Jefferson's vision by achieving a widespread level of excellence, it has not achieved the objective of equity implicit in Jefferson's statement. In Equity and Excellence in American Higher Education, William G. Bowen, Martin A. Kurzweil, and Eugene M. Tobin explore the cause for this divide. Employing historical research, examination of the most recent social science and public policy scholarship, international comparisons, and detailed empirical analysis of rich new data, the authors study the intersection between "excellence" and "equity" objectives. Beginning with a time line tracing efforts to achieve equity and excellence in higher education from the American Revolution to the early Cold War years, this narrative reveals the halting, episodic progress in broadening access across the dividing lines of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The authors argue that despite our rhetoric of inclusiveness, a significant number of youth from poor families do not share equal access to America's elite colleges and universities. While America has achieved the highest level of educational attainment of any country, it runs the risk of losing this position unless it can markedly improve the precollegiate preparation of students from racial minorities and lower-income families. After identifying the "equity" problem at the national level and studying nineteen selective colleges and universities, the authors propose a set of potential actions to be taken at federal, state, local, and institutional levels. With recommendations ranging from reform of the admissions process, to restructuring of federal financial aid and state support of public universities, to addressing the various precollegiate obstacles that disadvantaged students face at home and in school, the authors urge all selective colleges and universities to continue race-sensitive admissions policies, while urging the most selective (and privileged) institutions to enroll more well-qualified students from families with low socioeconomic status.

In The Shape of the River, William Bowen and Derek Bok documented the benefits of affirmative action for minority students, their communities, and the nation at large. But they also found that too many failed to achieve academic success. In The Source of the River, Douglas Massey and his colleagues investigate the roots of minority underperformance in selective colleges and universities. They explain how such factors as neighborhood, family, peer group, and early schooling influence the academic performance of students from differing racial and ethnic origins and differing social classes. Drawing on a major new source of data--the National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen--the authors undertake a comprehensive analysis of the diverse pathways by which whites, African Americans, Latinos, and Asians enter American higher education. Theirs is the first study to document the different characteristics that students bring to campus and to trace out the influence of these differences on later academic performance. They show that black and Latino students do not enter college disadvantaged by a lack of self-esteem. In fact, overconfidence is more common than low self-confidence among some minority students. The literature suggests that some students from these populations—first-generation college students (FGCS)— have contributed to a decrease in college retention. To address persistence and retention concerns, institutions established student engagement programs (SEP) to assist FGCS in the academic and social integration needed to acclimate to college and persist through graduation. The purpose of this mixed-methods, descriptive case study was to explore the characteristics and experiences of FGCS of color attending a majority institution and participating in the institution’s student engagement program for FGCS. Quantitatively, the ex post facto data explored student characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, ACT admissions score, final high school GPA, cumulative institutional GPAs, and the athletic and housing status of the first-generation college freshmen participating in the SEP. The data were used also to discover associations among selected student characteristics. Qualitatively, the interview responses of senior-level, Hispanic and African American FGCS revealed the pre-college and college experiences that impacted their academic and social integration. The results of the study support most of the limited literature on first-generation college students of color and provide insight regarding the persistence and completion of FGCS of color to the institution under study as well as to similar institutions. ."--Page 2.
