Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational and causal comparative research design was to discover the existing relationships between students' self-efficacy and three other variables: (a) achievement, (b) gender, and (c) socioeconomic status. Approximately 257 eighth grade students participated in the study. The study was conducted in a non-diverse public school located in the northeastern mountains of Georgia. Over 55% of the students receive free/reduced price lunches. The findings from this study contribute to the growing knowledge about how the factors of achievement, gender, and socioeconomic status (SES) are related to a student's self-efficacy. A correlational design was used to analyze the relationship between self-efficacy and student achievement, and a comparative design was used to analyze the relationship between SES and gender of the students, and how those variables affect student self-efficacy. All participants completed a 37-question survey, Children's Perceived Self-Efficacy Scale, which was used to measure the self-efficacy of students. Student achievement ability was measured with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Whether a student was eligible for free or reduced price lunches determined the SES of each student. The findings from this study can be used to help improve students' desire to learn by the development of programs within schools to address different areas of self-efficacy.

Administrators, school counselors, teachers, and community leader's work together to increase success levels among students K-12. Various studies throughout history have sought to determine the many variables that contribute to academic success. The purpose of this study was to continue adding to the literature base in an effort to identify areas that could impact student academic success. In particular, this study examined whether academic self-efficacy, ethnic identity, sex, and socioeconomic status reliably predicted academic performance among students in Grades 6, 7, and 8. Using a non-experimental, quantitative design, this correlational research study explored the relationships of several variables (academic self-efficacy, ethnic identity, sex, and socioeconomic status) with academic performance of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade adolescents. Grade point averages and scores from the Mississippi Curriculum Test, Second Edition (MCT-2) were obtained from each student's cumulative record. Students completed the Morgan-Jinks Student Efficacy Scale (Jinks & Morgan, 1999) and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney, 1999). Scores from these two assessments, grade point averages, and scores from the MCT-2 were entered into SPSS. After analyzing results with a multiple linear regression analysis, the researcher concluded that a final model, with the two variables of academic self-efficacy and sex, was statistically significant. The researcher concluded that academic self-efficacy and sex might act as buffers for the impact of ethnic identity and socioeconomic status on student academic performance. Results indicated that those students who had higher academic self-efficacy levels had higher grade point averages and MCT-2 levels. Furthermore, differences in sex also play a pertinent part in student academic performance, with girls demonstrating both higher grade point averages and MCT2 scores than boys. Using information gained from this study, school counselors may want to specifically address academic self-efficacy when working with students who are performing poorly academically. Classroom guidance, individual counseling, and small group counseling are the perfect avenues to specifically target this area with students. School counselors may also wish to host developmental workshops geared towards faculty, staff, and parents so that additional revisions can be made in other environments.

Book excerpt: It has been argued by some that boys are inherently better in mathematics than girls (Halpern, 2012; Summers, 2005). However, according to international assessments such as the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study’s (TIMSS) and Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), boys do not always outperform girls in mathematics (Mullis, Martin, Foy, & Arora, 2012; OECD, 2014). As such, something other than biology might better explain variations in mathematics performance. One explanation may be self-efficacy, a label used to describe judgments people make about themselves in terms of whether or not they have the capability of doing something (Bandura, 1995; Bandura 1997). Self-efficacy has been found to have a significant effect on academic achievement (Bandura, 1995; Bandura 1997); Borman & Overman, 2004; Fast, Lewis, Bryant, Bocian, Cardullo, Rettig, & Hammond, 2010; Pietsch, Walker & Chapman, 2003). This dissertation explored the relationship of gender, self-efficacy, and mathematics achievement on the TIMSS assessment as a way to change biological arguments that boys are inherently better than girls in mathematics. The country of focus is the United States and the students studied were fourth grade participants who took the 2007 TIMSS test (n = 7,896) and eighth grade participants who took the TIMSS 2011 (n = 10, 477). Self-efficacy was examined through responses to selected TIMSS student background questionnaire statements that represented self-efficacy. Results of this study show that gender on its own is not a significant predictor of mathematics achievement. A positive relationship exists between self-efficacy and mathematics achievement. Further, high self-efficacy is the greatest predictor of mathematics achievement studied in this dissertation. High self-efficacy gave boys a greater advantage in mathematics than girls at both grade levels. This work supports the importance of self-efficacy to mathematics achievement and diminishes the significance of gender to the same end. -- Abstract.

Cultural diversity could lead to better learning and democracy outcomes. However, it also poses challenges for educators and schools. For example, research has revealed marked cultural differences in motivation, learning attitudes, thinking styles and school achievement. Attempts have been made to assure teaching and learning quality by designing standardized curricula and giving standardized tests. However, it is questionable whether standardized tests could capture the diverse aptitudes and skills students with different cultural experiences bring to the classroom. It is also question-able whether a standardized curriculum would lead to positive learningoutcomes for all. In 1998, we convened a conference in the University of Hong Kong, and invited experts from different parts of globe to discuss how to apply psychology to enhance learning and teaching quality. Probably because of the cultural diversity of the conference participants, multicultural education emerged as one of the dominant themes in the conference. For example, in the Opening Address, Robert Sternberg argued for the importance of cultural sensitivity in ability testing. In another keynote address, Martin Maehr discussed the implications of motivation research for designing an optimal achievement environment for culturally diverse students. Professor Sternberg’s paper is included in this volume, and Professor Maehr’s article was published in a previous volume we edited (Student Motivation: The Culture and Context of Learning, Plenum, 2001). The contributors of this volume include psychologists and education researchers from Africa, Asia, Australia and North, and some of them have extensive experiences in multicultural education. Despite their diverse cultural and professional background, the contributors agree that to meet the challenges posed by cultural diversity, educators need to have the sensitivity to multiplicity of student abilities in aptitude and achievement assessment.

Book excerpt: Research reveals that gifted students at Springfield Middle School in Williamsport, Maryland possess stronger levels of self-efficacy than average students. For the purpose of this study, the term "gifted students" refers to students who are enrolled in above-grade-level classes at Springfield Middle School. Students must score high in tests and interviews in order to be placed in above-grade-level classes. According to Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory, increased levels of self-efficacy contribute to a person's ability to complete a task. Using the Children's Perceived Academic Self-Efficacy subscale from The Morgan-Jinks Student Efficacy Scale (MJSES), the study conducted at Springfield Middle School examined the correlation between students' self-efficacy level and their self-reported academic grades in English, math, science, and social studies. Also, the correlation between above-grade-level students' self-efficacy and their self-reported grades was compared to those of general students. The sample included 56 6th, 7th, and 8th grade middle school students from a suburban area in Williamsport, Maryland. Through the use of a Chi Square Test of Independence, the results indicated that regardless of class level, students' self-efficacy in math and science are related to their grades in those subjects. Using independent t tests, no significant difference between the self-efficacy composite of grade-level and above-grade-level students was discovered.
