Personal relationships between professors and students were perceived acceptable at the same level as relationships between supervisors and supervisees with relationships between counselors and clients perceived as least acceptable. This study was designed to explore the acceptability of social, business, and romantic relationships in counselor-client, professor-student, and supervisor-supervisee relationships. In addition, the study sought to determine whether professors and doctoral students in CACREP-accredited counseling programs responded differently to ethical boundary issues, and whether the differences in relationships between professor-student, supervisor-supervisee, or counselor-client influenced their responses. The study examined and compared the responses of participants to boundary issues on three different surveys. This research study revealed a significant difference between perceptions of participants regarding the social, business, and romantic relationships. Participants perceived the social relationships to be most acceptable, the business relationships to be more acceptable at a moderate level, and the romantic relationships to be least acceptable. Counselor educators and counseling doctoral students agreed regarding personal relationships in counseling in all but one of the six areas that were studied. A significant difference was found between counselor educators and counseling doctoral students in relation to the perceptions of personal social relationships. Counselor educators perceived personal social relationships between counselors and clients, professors and students, and supervisors and supervisees to be more acceptable than did counseling doctoral students. This study found that, among counselor educators, as their ages increased, their mean score on the Counselor-Client Survey increased. This suggests that as the counselor educators2 age increased, their perceptions that counselor-client personal relationships were acceptable increased as well. In addition, older counselor educators perceived romantic relationships to be more acceptable between counselors and clients, professors and students, and supervisors and supervisees. This study provided information regarding the perceptions counselor educators and counseling doctoral students hold regarding the acceptability of personal relationships in counselor-client, professor-student, and supervisor-supervisee relationships. Additional research is needed to determine where the limits should be set for personal relationships (social, business, and romantic) between counselors and clients, professors and students, and supervisors and supervisees.

While senders and receivers often focus on verbal aspects of the messages they encounter, other aspects of communication, such as body language and voice inflection, serve to influence how messages are understood and, ultimately, how the receiver of the message responds. In clinical supervision settings, nonverbal communication occurs equally within the dyadic relationship between supervisor and supervisee. Often times, scholarship in this area reports from the perspective of the established professional with little input from the learner. As a result, a comprehensive understanding of the dyadic relationship is lost, despite several factors that influence the way nonverbal messages are communicated. In particular, counseling supervision dyads encounter many of the same social factors that occur in counseling relationships among clinician and client. Such factors are diverse and cover a wide range including gender identity, culture, and sexuality. Without an explicit awareness as to the existence of these influences, supervisors are not always cognizant of the ways in which their own nonverbal cues can influence the supervisory relationship. Thus, there has been no definitive research related to nonverbal communication in counseling supervision. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore nonverbal communication as it occurs in the dyadic clinical supervision relationship. Using a qualitative design, this study collected and analyzed data using constructivist grounded theory and Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) interviewing techniques. The study sought to elucidate (a) experiences of nonverbal communication in supervision sessions, (b) explore patterns of meaning based on nonverbal cues identified by the supervisor and supervisee, and (c) investigate supervisees' perceptions of the supervisory relationship in response to nonverbal communication cues rendered by the supervisor. Results suggest that, during supervision sessions, both supervisors and supervisees are affected by and react to nonverbal forms of communication, yet do not always disclose their thoughts as it relates to their experience. This effects the communication process and often leads to a sense of uneasiness in supervision followed by awkward periods of silence. Results further suggested that, the use of silence by supervisors contributed greatly in identifying effective and ineffective ways to incorporate silence into sessions as a supervision strategy. Finally, the dyadic effect further influenced nonverbal communication among dyads. However, when communication practices within the supervision relationship was poor, a supervision dyad often functioned using low context (LC) communication. Conversely, when communication was equally productive for both supervisor and supervisee, dyads functioned from a high context (HC) perspective, resulting in fewer missed communication cues and an increase in complex forms of nonverbal communication"--Pages xi-xii.

Book excerpt: The counseling relationship has long been considered an essential part of the foundation of positive client outcomes in counseling. While many factors play a role in the therapeutic relationship, the facilitative conditions of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness have been the most-researched components of the Person-Centered construct of the therapeutic relationship. The supervisory relationship parallels the therapeutic relationship in many ways, and as the therapeutic relationship is critical to counseling, the supervisory relationship is foundational to effective supervision. While the facilitative conditions are empirically proven to contribute to positive client outcomes within the therapeutic relationship, the role of the counselor's supervisory relationship has been largely unexplored in its association to client outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between the facilitative conditions perceived by the client during counseling, and the facilitative conditions perceived by the counselor-in-training during supervision. Additionally, these variables were tested for their ability to predict client outcomes. The sample of this study consisted of 88 clients and 55 counselors-in-training at a large university in the southeastern United States. Both clients and counselors-in-training completed two instruments to ascertain the quality of their counseling and supervision relationships. The Outcomes Questionnaire-45 was utilized to collect client outcomes data. Results validate a correlation between the client's perception of the therapeutic relationship and client outcomes, however there appears to be no relationship between the supervisory relationship and client outcomes. Further results of the study and limitations were discussed.
