Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a codification in two parts of conventional aircraft handling qualities criteria. The results of this effort are to serve as an intermediate design guide in the areas of lateral-directional oscillatory and roll control. The roll handling qualities portion of this report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. In the lateral oscillatory portion of this effort, in defining requirements for satisfactory Dutch roll characteristics, a fundamental consideration is the fact that the motions characterizing this mode are ordinarily not the pilot's chief objective. That is, he is not deliberately inducing Dutch roll motions in the sense that he induces rolling and longitudinal short-period motions. A worthwhile approach to establishment of Dutch roll damping requirements is to first establish the basic level, and then to study the varied influences of the disturbance parameters. This approach provides the basis for the material contained in this report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. Regulation of the bank angle to maintain heading is a close-loop tracking task in which the pilot applies aileron control as a function of observed bank angle error. For large heading changes, the steady-state bank angle consistent with available or desired load factor is attained in an open-loop fashion; it is then regulated in a closed-loop fashion throughout the remainder of the turn. For the transient entry and exit from the turn, the pilot is not concerned with bank angle per se, but rather with attaining a mentally commanded bank angle with tolerable accuracy in a reasonable time, and with an easily learned and comfortable program of aileron movements.

Book Synopsis An Examination of Handling Qualities Criteria for V/STOL Aircraft by : Seth B. Anderson
Download or read book An Examination of Handling Qualities Criteria for V/STOL Aircraft written by Seth B. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been undertaken to define hand-ling qualities criteria for V/STOL aircraft. With the current military requirements for helicopters and airplanes as a framework, modifications and additions were made for conversion to a preliminary set of V/STOL requirements using a broad background of flight experience and pilots' comments from VTOL and STOL aircraft, BLC (boundary-layer-control) equipped aircraft, variable stability aircraft, flight simulators and landing approach studies. The report contains a discussion of the reasoning behind and the sources of information leading to suggested requirements. The results of the study indicate that the majority of V/STOL requirements can be defined by modifications to the helicopter and/or airplane requirements by appropriate definition of reference speeds. Areas where a requirement is included but where the information is felt to be inadequate to establish a firm quantitative requirement include the following: Control power and damping relationships about all axes for various sizes and types of aircraft; control power, sensitivity, d-amping and response for height control; dynamic longitudinal and dynamic lateral- directional stability in the transition region, including emergency operation; hovering steadiness; acceleration and deceleration in transition; descent rates and flight-path angles in steep approaches, and thrust margin for approach.
Book Synopsis Aviation Safety and Pilot Control by : National Research Council
Download or read book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Book Synopsis Advances In Aircraft Flight Control by : MB Tischler
Download or read book Advances In Aircraft Flight Control written by MB Tischler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a single comprehensive resource that reviews many of the current aircraft flight control programmes from the perspective of experienced practitioners directly involved in the projects. Each chapter discusses a specific aircraft flight programme covering the control system design considerations, control law architecture, simulation and analysis, flight test optimization and handling qualities evaluations. The programmes described have widely exploited modern interdisciplinary tools and techniques and the discussions include extensive flight test results. Many important `lessons learned' are included from the experience gained when design methods and requirements were tested and optimized in actual flight demonstration.
Book Synopsis The Interpretation of Flying Qualities Requirements for Flight Control System Design by :
Download or read book The Interpretation of Flying Qualities Requirements for Flight Control System Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to design an experimental flight test program for the Total In-Flight Simulator CTIFS) directed toward the interface between flying qualities requirements and flight control system design criteria. The eventual goal is to provide an interpretation or translation of flying qualities requirements for use by the flight control system designer. Specifically, an angle of attack and pitch rate command system matrix involving both short term and long term dynamics are specified for evaluation. A major objective of the research was to demonstrate that flying qualities criteria and flight control system configuration or architecture can be independent. Finally, additional configurations are proposed to evaluate the efficacy of dynamic decoupling.

Download or read book Aircraft Handling Qualities written by MS. John Hodgkinson and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1999 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a readable introduction to handling qualities, the combination of pilot acceptability and piloted performance with stability and control. It adopts the analytical and qualitative standpoints needed for handling qualities analysis and design of fixed-wing aircraft. Although there are several texts on stability and control, until now none has provided insight into the piloting concerns that have affected the success of recent fly-by-wire aircraft developments.
Book Synopsis A Flight Determination of the Tolerable Range of Effective Dihedral on a Conventional Fighter Airplane by : Charles J. Liddell
Download or read book A Flight Determination of the Tolerable Range of Effective Dihedral on a Conventional Fighter Airplane written by Charles J. Liddell and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conventional fighter airplane was equipped with a special device for varying the effective dihedral in flight. A survey of pilot's opinions was made to determine which values of effective dihedral were intolerable. The relation between the findings and the present Air Force-Navy stability and control specifications is discussed.
