Book excerpt: The focus of this research was to compare students' and their parents' mathematical attitudes using the Attitudes Towards Mathematics Instrument (ATMI). The sample consisted of 476 newly-enrolled students and 263 parents attending the New Student Orientation and Leadership program at a private historically black university. The sample was predominantly African American, with 96% of the students and 95% of the parents identifying themselves as African American. The ATMI total score and subscale scores of self-confidence, value, enjoyment, and motivation were explored to determine if there was a relationship between the mathematics attitudes of students enrolled at a private historically black university and their parents'. Analysis was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between the students' mathematics academic achievement as demonstrated on the ACT/SAT by the mathematics subset score and their mathematics attitude. Additional analysis was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between students' mathematics academic achievement as demonstrated on the ACT/SAT by the mathematics subset score and their parents' mathematics attitude.

It discusses the concepts and theories of mathematics-related affect along the lines of three dimensions. The first dimension identifies three broad categories of affect: motivation, emotions, and beliefs. There are two chapters that focus on beliefs and a chapter on attitude which cross-cuts through all these categories. The second dimension covers a rapidly fluctuating state to a more stable trait. All chapters in the book focus on trait-type affect and the chapter on motivation discusses both these dimensions. The third dimension regards the three main levels of theorizing: physiological (embodied), psychological (individual) and social. All chapters reflect that mathematics-related affect has mainly been studied using psychological theories.

This state of affairs is typically explained in terms of student ability, family background, differential treatment by teachers, and biased curricula. But what can explain disproportionately poor performance and persistence of African-American students who clearly possess the ability to do well, who come from varied family and socioeconomic backgrounds, who are taught by caring and concerned teachers, and who learn mathematics in the context of a reform-oriented mathematics curriculum? And, why do some African-American students succeed in mathematics when underachievement is the norm among their fellow students? Danny Martin addresses these questions in Mathematics Success and Failure Among African-American Youth, the results of a year-long ethnographic and observational study of African-American students and their parents and teachers. Mathematics Success and Failure Among African-American Youth goes beyond the conventional explanations of ability, socioeconomic status, differential treatment, and biased curricula to consider the effects of history, community, and peers--and the individual agency that allows some students to succeed despite these influences. Martin's analysis suggests that prior studies of mathematics achievement and persistence among African Americans have failed to link sociohistorical, community, school, and intrapersonal forces in sufficiently meaningful ways, and that they suffer from theoretical and methodological limitations that hinder the ability of mathematics educators to reverse the negative achievement and persistence trends that continue to afflict African-American students. The analyses and findings offered in Martin's book lead to exciting implications for future research and intervention efforts concerning African-American students--and other students for whom history and context play an important role. This book will be useful and informative to many groups: mathematics education researchers, education researchers interested in the social context of learning and teaching, policymakers, preservice and in-service teachers, students, parents, and community advocates. It will also be of interest to readers concerned with multicultural education, cross-cultural studies of mathematics learning, sociology of education, Black Studies, and issues of underrepresentation in science and mathematics.

Parting company with previous studies of the under-achievement of African American students, this study considered factors that have led to success in high school math achievement by listening to the voices of six African American male students. Using in-depth individual interviewing as a methodology, the study investigated the students' perspectives on the impact of the teacher, instructional strategies, and the students' own beliefs about their math abilities. The following themes were found to be significant to the success of these six African American males: a) Factors related to self (including ideas related to attitude towards math, view of own mathematical abilities, and the role of race). b) Factors related to the teacher (including engaging learning tasks, positive classroom environment, and a display of care for students). c) Factors related to the support of learning (including access to help, involvement in school, and other supporting adults). Contrary to other research findings, the role of race was not clearly identified as a significant factor.

Book excerpt: African American students continue to underperform and are underrepresented in areas, including mathematics (Heubert & Hauser, 1999; Jencks & Phillips, 1998; National Postsecondary Education Cooperative, Gandara, Bial, & Educational Resources Information Center, 2001). Students' aspirations and beliefs about the education they are receiving frequently do not match with the perceptions of their teachers, especially for African American students (Garibaldi, 1992). Teachers of these students often perceive these students' academic ability, attitudes, and motivation negatively even though African American students may experience them positively. Two competing theories regarding how others' view of a student's abilities influences that student's academic attitudes are stereotype threat and resiliency theory. The purpose of this study was to explore these questions and research topics. Results of the current study support resiliency theory, with African American students reporting significantly greater enjoyment of mathematics than White students and reporting self-perceptions in mathematics at about the same rate as White students regardless of teachers underrating them and overrating their White counterparts on both measures.

The chapters offered in this book demonstrate how mathematics instruction for African American students needs to take into account historical marginalization and present-day policies that do harm to Black students (Kunjufu, 2005). Empowering mathematics instruction for African American students needs to take into consideration and promote students’ cultural, spiritual, and historical identities. Furthermore, mathematics instruction for African American students should create opportunities for students to express themselves and the needs of their communities as a means to promote social justice both within their classrooms and communities.

Book excerpt: President Obama's 2014 "My Brother's Keeper" initiative responds to the continuing educational disparities that the No Child Left Behind Act was intended to have addressed. The preoccupation with standardized testing and accountability over the past decade has revealed evidence of disparities in achievement between Black male students and their White counterparts. Critical Race Theorists have framed these persistent disparities as evidence of the opportunity gap and have advocated culturally responsive pedagogy that would facilitate students' academic success. This study is contextualized in the particular concerns about the lack of preparation for college level mathematics among Black males. This multiple case study of eight first generation Black male college students examined students' perceptions of their attitudes towards and experiences in high school mathematics classes and their impact on their success in college. The eight participants, two representing each level of viii mathematics preparation at a demographically diverse college in Florida, were interviewed twice: at the beginning and at the end of their first college mathematics course. Data from these 16 interviews were analyzed to identify reasons for their differential preparation. Cross-case analysis revealed that students' attitudes towards mathematics were mediated by their perceptions of its relevance and their definitions of success in the subject. Students, especially those who were under-prepared for college mathematics, found math irrelevant to their lives. Students defined success in terms of grades and understanding. Student perceptions of their experiences in mathematics were impacted by test preparation, teacher-student relationships the race of the teacher, and perceived stereotyping by teacher. Framed within the perspective of culturally relevant pedagogy, this analysis reveals that the instructional patterns experienced by the students failed to interrupt practices that have traditionally marginalized Black male students. Finally, drawing on Critical Race Theory and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy to examine the disjunctions between high school graduation requirements and college preparation, the dominance of test preparation over conceptual understanding and the role of individual characteristics and parental influences in challenging deficit perspectives, the analysis reveals how the effects of the curriculum as a master script influenced participants' preparedness for college level mathematics.
