Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem. The level of stress experienced by college students can be significant. It can be even more pronounced in nursing students as a result of the intense curriculum and clinical experiences. Stress can be the result of academic, personal, or interpersonal causes. It can affect physical, psychological, spiritual, and social well-being. Stress is not always avoidable but learning techniques to manage stress can improve overall well-being by decreasing the physical, psychological, spiritual, and social effects of stress. Learning to manage stress through holistic self-care with mindfulness stress reduction techniques could help alleviate the negative effects of stress, enabling the student to manage stress in a more appropriate and healthy manner. -- Purpose. The purpose of the project was to determine whether education on stress and the use of mindfulness stress reduction techniques for stress management purposes in first semester nursing students would decrease the level of perceived stress. Background. Nursing students can experience a high level of stress as the result of both academic and personal stressors. -- Project design. Students were recruited for voluntary participation in the mindfulness stress reduction (MSR) intervention. The MSR intervention took place over an eight week period with biweekly mindfulness practice sessions offered. Descriptive statistics and a non-randomized pre-test/post-test design were used to determine outcome measurements for the level of stress perception and mindfulness. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) was used for data collection. -- Sample. A non-randomized convenience sample was recruited from the undergraduate first semester nursing students in a pre-licensure traditional baccalaureate nursing program (BSN) in a private college. -- Findings. The pre and post intervention scores of mindfulness (MAAS) and perceived stress (PSS) were not significantly different. In part, this might have been related to the small pool of participants. The post intervention questionnaire did reveal a number of positive effects of the MSR intervention. -- Recommendations. Future studies could examine how to increase participation for a more effective MSR intervention in hopes of positively impacting nursing students’ levels of stress and mindfulness.

Abstract: 2 Abstract of thesis entitled Perceived stress and coping strategies of baccalaureate nursing students in clinical practice Submitted by Chan Kit Lin for the degree of Master of Nursing at the University of Hong Kong in August 2006 Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine Hong Kong baccalaureate nursing students' stress, physio-psycho-social health and their coping strategies in clinical practice. Design: A cross-sectional and descriptive study design was used. Sample: All baccalaureate nursing students studying at the University of Hong 3 Kong who have clinical experiences were invited to participate in this study. Among 342 eligible subjects, 205 completed and returned the survey (response rate was 60%). Methods: A self-administrative survey including demographics, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Physio-psycho-social Response Scale (PPSRS), and Coping Behaviour Inventory (CBI) was used. The researcher approached the eligible subjects at the end of lectures. Those who were willing to participate in the study were required to sign a consent form, fill in the questionnaire and then return it to the researcher immediately. Results: The findings revealed that students perceived a moderate level of stress [mean (SD) = 2.10 (0.44)] and were in good physio-psycho-social health [mean (SD) =1.40 (0.65)]. The most common stressor came from 'lack of professional knowledge and skills' [mean (SD) = 2.34 (0.63)]. Emotional symptoms commonly occurred in response to clinical stress. Students frequently used transference coping strategies, which they found most effective in dealing with stress in clinical practice. Furthermore, year of study and level of stress were the two factors affecting students' health. Year of study and stress from taking care of patients were the two predictors of the frequency of use of the problem-solving approach. Year of study, religion and stress from teachers and nursing staff affected the frequency of use of avoidance strategies. The frequency of four coping strategies, stress from peers and daily life, 4 stress from taking care of patients and religion predicted the effectiveness of coping. Conclusion: The results provided valuable information for clinical educators and clinical staff in identifying students' needs, facilitating their learning in the clinical setting and developing effective interventions to reduce the stress they encounter. Book excerpt: "Background: Strengthening attention-regulation efficiency of nurse graduates is important to the quality and safety of nursing practice in increasingly complex and cognitively distracting workplace environments (Burger & Lockhart, 2017). Academic and clinical stressors are experienced by most nursing students enrolled in a nursing program (Yuksel & Yilmaz, 2020). Local problem: Heavy academic workloads, stressors from clinical placements such as complex patient care and lack of effective coping strategies for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: The participant population for this project included 8 undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a traditional baccalaureate program at a Southern Louisiana University. (n=8). Participation in the project was voluntary. Intervention: The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to evaluate the stress perception of undergraduate nursing students utilizing mindfulness meditation. This would be done through an app from the participants' smartphone device 5 days per week for 8 weeks. Results: The evaluation of the project's outcomes after completion of the mindfulness meditation program revealed that there was a 43% decrease in mean scores from pre- to post-intervention. Evaluation of this EBP project was determined by setting a benchmark to see a 25% decrease in mean scores of participants' perceived stress. Conclusions: Given the connection between nurses' attention regulation capacity and safe patient care, the effectiveness of mindfulness techniques has proven to be a reliable tool when it comes to managing the stress perception of nursing students. Utilization of stress management techniques in nursing education could increase student performance and decrease attrition rates. Book excerpt: "Despite extensive research establishing that stress affects problem-solving ability and coping, and leads to decreased learning, academic performance, and retention in nursing students, a paucity of research explores specific factors that could enhance these learning processes and outcomes. This explanatory correlational study examines the mediating effect of learned resourcefulness, the ability to regulate emotions and cognitions, on the relationships of stressors--both personal and academic--to academic performance in baccalaureate nursing students. Gadzella's Student-life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Rosenbaum's Self-Control Scale (SCS), a measure of learned resourcefulness, were administered to 53 junior level baccalaureate nursing students (92.5% female; 84.9% Caucasian; 9.4% African-American or Black) at a large urban university in North Carolina. High levels of both personal and academic stressors were revealed, but were not significant predictors of academic performance (p = .90). Age was a significant predictor of academic performance (p
