Book Synopsis A Strategy for a Metaphorical Reading of the Epistle of James by : S. H. Ong
Download or read book A Strategy for a Metaphorical Reading of the Epistle of James written by S. H. Ong and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines how metaphorical concepts hold together the epistle of James and how these concepts communicate meaning and present argument to the reader. The author looks at five strategies involved with the use of metaphors: (1) how the metaphors form the thematic or argumentative core of the text; (2) how they reflect the writer's argument; (3) how they take advantage of the audience's background; (4) how they are created by the use of intentional statements; and finally, (5) how metaphors create unity within various sections and how the pattern of metaphors provides a unity between various sections. A Strategy for a Metaphorical Reading of the Epistle of James provides a new view of the epistle by emphasizing the need to see the 'big picture.' This thorough and thought-provoking analysis is an excellent tool to be used alongside linguistic, historical and exegetical scrutiny of the epistle. It is highly appropriate for classes in biblical criticism or the Epistle of James, as well as classes on metaphoric criticism and textual criticism.
Book Synopsis Toward a Postcolonial Reading of the Epistle of James by : Ingeborg Mongstad-Kvammen
Download or read book Toward a Postcolonial Reading of the Epistle of James written by Ingeborg Mongstad-Kvammen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward a Postcolonial Reading of the Epistle of James offers an interpretation of Jas 2:1-13 putting the text in the midst of the Roman imperial system of rank. This study shows that the conflict of the text has more to do with differences of rank than poverty and wealth. The main problem is that the Christian assemblies are acting according to Roman cultural etiquette instead of their Jewish-Christian heritage when a Roman equestrian and a beggar visit the assembly. The members of the assemblies are accused of having become too Roman. From a postcolonial perspective, this is a typical case of hybrid identities. Additional key concepts from postcolonialism, such as diaspora, ‘othering’, naming of oppressors, and binarisms such as coloniser/colonised, centre/margin, honour/shame and power/powerless, are highlighted throughout the study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new and comprehensive chiastic structure as well as a new unifying theme for the Letter of James. In accord with this structure that organizes its oral performance, the words "worship to live by" express what the letter as a whole is exhorting its audience to adopt. "Worship" includes not only liturgical worship but also the ethical behavior that complements it, so that the result is a holistic way of worshiping God. And the words "to live by" embrace the worshipful conduct by which to live out presently one's birth to a new life as a believer before the final coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, with a view to the future eternal life to be granted at the last judgment as the outcome of such worship. In short, the Letter of James urges its audience to practice the worship to live by now in order to live eternally.

Book excerpt: In this fascinating book John Keenan offers a classical commentary on the New Testament Letter of James, section by section, informed by a thorough study of contemporary Jamesian scholarship. His approach is unique in theat it employs Mahayana Buddhist Philosophy as the interpretive lens to focus on this early Christian text. The author argues that the first chapter of James' letter presents wisdom as non-discriminative, in a manner very similar to Mahayana Buddhist teaching on wisdom. And James' insistence upon deeds of compasssion and justice recommends a notion of Christian practice that is quite close to the Mahayana ideal of Bodhisattva engagement in the world. Because of these areas of resonance, James in particularly amenable to a Mahayana reading-a reading that enables us to elicit fresh insights from the text.

Download or read book Bad Faith written by Tom Drake-Brockman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus was murdered by the Jewish religious leaders whose power base was the temple of Jerusalem. Saul of Tarsus—later the Paul of Christianity—was one of these, and his brand of faith theology mirrored their theology of covenantal entitlement. Thus, Christianity’s basic theological principles derive from those who killed Jesus. This is just one of many challenging propositions backed with strong evidence that appear in this book. Jesus, like most Jews, was attuned to faithfulness rather than pure faith, to ethical behavior based on human empathy rather than metaphysical beliefs and rituals. The central focus of Jesus was hesed, the heart of the Jewish covenant with God which linked God’s mercy to human compassion and forgiveness, making both mutually interactive. This hesed forgiveness was anathema to the temple’s faux forgiveness and threatened its very existence. Therefore, Jesus came not to save us, but to show us how to save ourselves. Reinterpreting a key parable of Jesus in this light, the Parable of the Tares, Jesus can be most plausibly understood as an incarnation of Adam, the original prototype human who God, in Genesis, appointed to oversee his creation and guide our spiritual evolution. His mission was not about any sacrificial death, but about establishing the spiritual humanism of Judaic hesed as the central purpose of human existence.
