Book Synopsis Sex Work and Social Movement in India by : Toorjo Ghose
Download or read book Sex Work and Social Movement in India written by Toorjo Ghose and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines and theorizes about the emergence, growth, impact, collapse, and rejuvenation of a sex worker movement in India, exploring the manner in which the two pandemics – HIV and COVID-19 – bookended a feminist movement through more than a quarter of a century, shaping its trajectory over the course of that time. Focusing on the sex workers’ collective Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC) in Kolkata, the book asks these questions: How did a sex workers’ collective rise from the margins of Indian society during the HIV pandemic, to become the vanguard of a global sex work movement, with half a million members, and partner collectives stretching across the world? What were the strategies deployed by the collective to engage with the health, social, and political landscapes surrounding it? Moreover, what were the factors that led to the splintering of a solidarity that had endured for a quarter of a century? Finally, what does the DMSC story tell us about social movements that rise from the extreme margins of society in postcolonial contexts? Drawing on empirical research, the author explores the conceptual and practice implications for the fields of social movement, feminist, public health, and postcolonial political scholarship. The book suggests that activist, public health, social work, and policy initiatives in poor women’s communities in postcolonial contexts need to be informed by the temporal, community, organizational, institutional, and affective markers that emerge in the research. The first book to examine the DMSC sex work movement in India as a significant feminist movement of our times, this book will be of interest to researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including South Asian Studies, Sociology, Social Work, Public Health, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Political Science.

Book Synopsis Himalayan Journeys Along the Ancient Silk Roads by : Pamala Wayland
Download or read book Himalayan Journeys Along the Ancient Silk Roads written by Pamala Wayland and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In choosing this manuscript, you are entering into the realm of adventure, travel, synchronicity, and enlightenment. It is a rich read with stories of high altitude adventures and deep cultural immersion. It is the story of my journeys that unfolded in the Himalayas and the Asian landscapes of the Silk Roads over decades of travel which sculpted a complex worldview. It offers a looking glass into a serpentine and deeply philosophical world filled with the textures, tastes, and splendor of the Asian continent. It is an opportunity to visit this part of our human heritage, to hold a gem in your hand. The text is lined with maps and gorgeous photos that place the far flung cultures of Asia in context where they live, where they have evolved with the philosophies and the exchange of ideas along the trade routes that have reshaped my own worldview. It is an account of what it is possible to learn when you travel with purpose, describing encounters with shamans, hermits, and wise people. The book refers to how synchronicities flow with ease when deeply engaged in the world and as I set foot on the Buddhist path to compassion, understanding, and awakening. As I criss-crossed the Silk Roads, I photographed the cultures that I was moving through and gathered an understanding of life as it is lived in indigenous sustainable cultures. The beauty, the pageantry and the symbolism I have explained in detail intending to impart an understanding of the ancient cultures that so richly offer us a path back to ourselves, back to our true nature. It is a beautiful read and has been described as, “Stunning and gorgeous writing.”
