Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eminent Women of the Age: Being Narratives of the Lives and Deeds of the Most Prominent Women of the Present Generation The world is full of books that narrate the deeds and utter the praises of men. The lives of eminent men of our own time are made familiar to us in newspapers and magazines, in individual sketches and autobiographies, as well as in histories, dictionaries of biography, cyclopedias and other works of greater. Or less range of subject and extent of information. But, While many things have been written both by and for women, and much information has been published in one form and another in respect to eminent women of our age, there is not in existence, so far as the publishers are aware, any work, or series of works, which supplies the information con tained in this volume, or preoccupies its field. Book Synopsis The Eminent and Heroic Women of America (Classic Reprint) by : Elizabeth F. Ellet

This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eminent and Heroic Women of America My success in these applications has not been such as to enable me to fill out entirely my own idea of the work I wished to present to the reader. Some of the sketches are necessarily brief and meagre, and perhaps few of them do full justice to their subjects. There is, also, inherent dith culty in delineating female character, which impresses itself on the memory of those who have known the individual by delicate traits, that may be felt but not described. The actions of men stand out in prominent relief, and are a safe guide in forming a judgment of them a woman's sphere, on the other hand, is secluded, and in very few instances does her personal history, even though she may fill a conspicuous position, afford sufficient incident to throw a strong light upon her character. This want of salient, points for description must be felt by all who have attempted a faithful portraiture of some beloved female relative. How much is the difficulty increased when a stranger essays a tribute to those who no longer among the living, and whose existence was passed for the most part in a quiet round of domestic duties! Book Synopsis Great Books by German Women in the Age of Emotion, 1770-1820 by : Margaretmary Daley
Download or read book Great Books by German Women in the Age of Emotion, 1770-1820 written by Margaretmary Daley and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2022 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Literature written by women in German during the period long known patriarchally as the Age of Goethe was largely lumped in with other unserious or artistically unworthy works under the category Trivialliteratur, literally 'trivial literature.' Using insights from Gender Studies yet acknowledging the need for a literary canon, Great Books by German Women offers a critical interpretation of six canon-worthy German novels written by women in the period, for which it coins the term 'Age of Emotion.' The novels are chosen because they depict women's ordinary yet interesting lives and, equally, because each displays formal strengths that yield prose particularly able to express emotion. The first, Sophie von La Roche's Die Geschichte des Frèauleins von Sternheim (The History of Lady von Sternheim), draws on the tradition of the epistolary novel while also finding new ways to depict empathetic emotions. The second, Friederike Unger's Julchen Grèunthal, brings to the Frauenroman or women's novel the use of irony to portray a heroine's emotions during her coming of age. The next novels add lyricism to their prose to capture sensual emotions: Sophie Mereau's Blèutenalter der Empfindung (The Blossoming of Feeling) imagines women's affinity for the philosophical sublime, while Caroline Wolzogen depicts female desire in her Agnes von Lilien. The fifth novel, Die Honigmonathe (The Honeymoon), by Karoline Fischer, explores the agony that extreme emotions cause--not only for women but also for men. The last novel, Caroline Pichler's Frauenwèurde (The Dignity of Women) expands the focus from a young heroine to multiple mature characters while maintaining the centrality of women's talents and emotions. Finally, this study accords honorable mention to some other women's novels before concluding that the influence of these six works was in no way trivial, either in portraying women's lives and emotions or in the history of German literature"--
Book Synopsis Notable Women in History by : Willis J. Abbot
Download or read book Notable Women in History written by Willis J. Abbot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notable Women in History: The Lives of Women Who in All Ages, All Lands, and in All Womanly Occupations Have Won Fame and Put Their Imprint on the World's History Lord Raglan or Florence Nightingale did the more to reanimate the drooping spirits of the English soldiers in the Crimea. And as a dashing leader, a beaux sabreur, Sheridan in no degree surpassed Joan of Arc. Her white armor and flowing tresses rallied her waver ing troops as effectively as did that terrible oath which Little Phil. Is practically reputed to have ripped out on the twenty - mile ride to Winchester. These are extreme instances of course - extreme as to men as well as to women. But I think no one can read these sketches of seventy Women of History - it would not have been hard to collect three times as many - without appreciating some of the heights to which the feminine mind is capable of rising and the infinite variety of its flights. Let it be remembered that in all times and amidst all peoples of which we have knowledge the woman has been held the weaker vessel and the study of man has been to keep her weak. Not necessarily physically weak by any means. Wit ness the lordly husband of the tropics lolling at ease while his various wives till the fields. But weak in all that makes for personal initiative and independence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wage-Earning Women The study of a wide field in industry cannot be ao complished by one person within a reasonable period, owing to obstacles of time and space. Therefore, the only practicable means of making such a study is to employ assistance. In the investigation which forms the subject of the following Chapters I was authorized to engage such help as I needed, and it gives me great pleasure to acknowledge here my indebtedness to the forty assistants who made this story of wage-earning women possible. Their work, as well as mine, appears in the following pages. Theirs was the task of collect ing material and furnishing reports on their respective fields, mine the task of planning and directing and editing.
