Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction of North Carolina, Vol. 1: For the Scholastic Years 1933-1934 and 1935-1936; Summary and Recommendations Chapter I contains my recommendations to the General Assembly. The other chapters present briefly information largely in statistical form rela tive to the historical development of public education in North Carolina. A large part of the several chapters was prepared by staff members and printed in the February, 1936, number of N orth Carolina, Education, official organ of The North Carolina Education Association. These articles have been slightly rewritten and reprinted here for historical purposes. This treatise is not presumed to be complete, but is intended Simply to touch some of the recorded facts which happened largely during the present century. It is to be hoped that this effort has been worthwhile, and that when the historian comes to-tell the story of public education for this period, he will find this report of some value. I am sure that anyone read ing these pages will be impressed with the remarkable progress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Public Education in the South (Classic Reprint) by : Edgar W. Knight
Download or read book Public Education in the South (Classic Reprint) written by Edgar W. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in the South This book is the outgrowth of several years' study of public educational problems in the United States, especially in the South, through courses in the history of education given at Trinity College and the University of North Carolina for teachers and prospective teachers and administrators. In such courses the aim has been to consider the principal problems of administration, support, and supervision of present-day education in the Southern States and to seek an understanding of their meaning in the light of their historical growth. The book is therefore a study of actual educational progress in the South rather than of educational theories; and the relation between education and economic, social, political, and religious influences is given emphasis. The book attempts to give the first general survey yet published in a single volume of the growth of public educational organization and practices in those eleven States which formed the Confederacy. The study seeks to trace the development of the democratic principles of education in the South, to explain their apparently slow application or practical acceptance, and to point out from the past certain valuable lessons for the educational problems of the present. The book has been prepared for the purpose of assisting the teacher, the educational administrator, and the public to a more intelligent understanding of the present educational situation in the Southern States and of their respective tasks in meeting it. As far as possible, therefore, the public educational problems of today are set forth in the light of their historical development.
