Book Synopsis Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy and Carbonate Sedimentology of the Latest Permian to Early Triassic in the Western United States, Northern Iran and Southern China by : Alexa Ruth Clements Sedlacek
Download or read book Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy and Carbonate Sedimentology of the Latest Permian to Early Triassic in the Western United States, Northern Iran and Southern China written by Alexa Ruth Clements Sedlacek and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study improves the resolution of the seawater 87Sr/86Sr record of the late Permian through Early Triassic through analyses of whole rock samples collected from Zal, Iran and Dawen, South China. The carbonate succession at Zal, Iran preserves the entire Early Triassic and was previously analyzed for δ13C. Analyses of Sr isotopes at a resolution similar to the δ13C record enables direct comparison between these two records, and also allows for determinations in the changes in rate of strontium rise. The Permian-Triassic boundary interval was sampled at higher resolution by analyzing rocks from a biostratigraphically constrained sections deposited at Dawen on the Great Bank of Guizhou, South China. These results indicate that the rate of strontium rise increased during the latest Permian, possibly as a result of elevated weathering rates during the post-extinction interval.
Book Synopsis Isotopes in Palaeoenvironmental Research by : Melanie J. Leng
Download or read book Isotopes in Palaeoenvironmental Research written by Melanie J. Leng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thorough reference shows how stable isotopes can be applied to understanding the palaeoenvironment, with chapters on the interpretation of isotopes in water, tree rings, bones and teeth, lake sediments, speleothems and marine sediments. The book offers detailed advice on calibration, including a multi-proxy approach, using isotope signals from different materials or combined with other palaeoenvironmental techniques, to enhance the reliability of readings.

Book Synopsis Stable Isotope Studies of the Water Cycle and Terrestrial Environments by : A-V. Bojar
Download or read book Stable Isotope Studies of the Water Cycle and Terrestrial Environments written by A-V. Bojar and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to Earth surface environmental reconstructions and environmental changes that may be deciphered and modelled using stable isotopes along with mineralogical/chemical, sedimentological, palaeontological/biological and climatological methodologies. The book is divided into two sections, both using stable isotopes (see www.geolsoc.org.uk/SP507) in various samples and phases as the main research tool. The first section is devoted to studies focusing on the distribution of isotopes in precipitation, groundwater, lakes, rivers, springs, tap water, mine water and their relationship with terrestrial environments at regional to continental scale. In relation to this, the second section includes case studies from a range of continental settings, investigating cave deposits (stalagmites, bat guano), animal skeletons (dinosaurs, alligators, turtles, bivalves), present and past soils (palaeosols) and limestones. The sections focus on the interaction between the surficial water cycle and underground water storage with deposits acting as archives of short- to long-term climatic and environmental changes. Examples from the Early Cretaceous to present time come from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America.
Book Synopsis The Uranium Isotope Paleoredox Proxy by : Kimberly V. Lau
Download or read book The Uranium Isotope Paleoredox Proxy written by Kimberly V. Lau and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uranium isotopes (238U/235U) have emerged as a proxy to reconstruct the redox conditions of the Earth's oceans and atmosphere based upon the large isotopic fractionation between reduced U(IV) and oxidized U(VI). Variations in 238U/235U, particularly when recorded in carbonate sediments, can track global trends in marine oxygenation and de-oxygenation. It is unique from other proxies because reduction primarily occurs at the sediment-water interface, and this sensitivity makes U isotopes especially relevant for the habitability of benthic animals. This Element covers the background, methods, and case studies of this promising tool for understanding Earth's environmental transitions, as rapid development continues to refine the accuracy of interpretations of 238U/235U records.
