Book Synopsis Austin Healey Sprite - The Complete Story by : Malcolm Thorne
Download or read book Austin Healey Sprite - The Complete Story written by Malcolm Thorne and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1958, one of the world's largest motor manufacturers unveiled a diminutive two-seater that would take the world by storm. Small in stature yet able to punch well above its weight, the Austin-Healey Sprite rapidly gained an enthusiastic following among keen drivers, as well as an impressive record in competition. Being neither expensive nor exotic, for many motorists the Sprite opened the door to sports car ownership and, in so doing, its commercial success was almost guaranteed. With over 250 photographs, this book includes: the genesis of the Sprite, from the Austin Seven and pre-war MG Midget, via Donald Healey's Riley- and Nash-engined models, to the Austin A30, A90 Atlantic and Healey Hundred. The development, launch and market reception is covered along with details of the evolution from Mk I to Mk IV, including the Frogeye and restyled ADO 41. Rallies, racing and record breaking details are given as well as information on modifications, special-bodied variants, replicas and finally, buying and restoring a Sprite today.

"It Came With Oil" is a euphemism for that jumping-off point from which we all leap when we want to learn the Art of Repair. By the chronicle of a young man's adventures in auto-repair-shop antics, road-trips, and with those peculiar but loveable British cars, an amusing backdrop is painted for invaluable lessons in automobile use and repair that all enjoy. This collection of true car-stories ranges everywhere from an explosion in a row of old English sports cars to tow-truck drivers' fears, from diagnostic technique to work habits, from race cars to motorcycles to lovers. This fun and practical look inside the journey from mending, toward repair, strikes a happy, meaningful, and lasting chord.

Book Synopsis Restoring Sprite & Midgets by : Trade Trade
Download or read book Restoring Sprite & Midgets written by Trade Trade and published by M-Y Books Limited. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical manual written with the home restorer in mind. Well illustrated & with clear instructions this manual guides the amateur through dismantling, repair & rebuilding. Special chapters on steering gear, suspension, brakes, electrics & trim by Grahame Bristow. Includes many diagrams. 216 pages. Whenever I see a rebuild guide I am impressed by how easy everything looks - every job seems to be so straightforward. Not surprisingly, since they have been written by seasoned professionals who have all the tools, own large workshops and have worked on the same cars for years. What they all have in common is that seasoned professionals are not the same as many of us. It's time that these guys started to think about real people. No, we don't own workshops, probably not even a double door garage - rarely even a single door garage. Many of us work on our cars outside on the road or a driveway, where a level surface is a dream. We are often tackling restoration problems for the first time. For example, a few years back, over the course of seven or eight months, I watched the slow building of a Peugeot 205 rally car. It was certainly an interesting and time consuming project; which included painting the bare shell inside and out. In fact I noticed that almost every day a bit more work had been done - as did many others amongst thousands of motorists who use the A316 Chertsey Road (one of the great London arteries) every single working day. The owner stripped and built the car on the rough grass verge outside his flat much to the admiration and enlightenment of many a humble commuter. Just like the rest of us, here was an enthusiast getting on with the job, without a workshop or garage, he just worked on the roadside. No power tools, no Blackhawk jig, nothing more than simple tools, four axle stands and his wits. Not only is working space at a premium, but so are specialist tools - even a trolley jack is a luxury for many. Also, surprisingly, many of us cannot weld or wish to learn that black art. Even if we could, where would we do it - on the grass verge outside our house, in a cramped garage, or in the yard? I didn't buy my MG with the intention of rebuilding it, I just wanted to drive it. The painful truth dawned later, and boy did I learn the hard way. I couldn't lay claim to being a great mechanic or being very knowledgeable about Midgets or Sprites. As you'll see, I made some fundamental errors building my own Midget, but I got there in the end, without much help and without being too adept in the spanner department. I simply intended to get it right, and if I got things wrong, well I just started again. Hopefully this guide, in conjunction with a little of your own research, will lead to a successful rebuild of your own. I've tried to cover as much as I can within these pages, but my knowledge is pretty shaky in some areas, especially with regard to the 1500 engine. If your car proves to be at variance with what has been written here, its not necessarily wrong, just that you will need to do some detective work of your own. Have fun. And when you've finished building the car, drive it - that's what they made it for...

Book Synopsis British Sports Cars of the 1950s and ’60s by : James Taylor
Download or read book British Sports Cars of the 1950s and ’60s written by James Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E-type Jaguar; Triumph Spitfire; MGA; Austin-Healey – nobody built sports cars like British manufacturers in the 1950s and '60s. There was something very special about the combination of low-slung open two-seater bodywork and spartan interior, a slick sporting gearchange and a throaty exhaust note. This was wind-in-the-hair motoring, and it was affordable by the average young man – at least, until he got married and had a family. MG and Triumph stood out as the market leaders, but many other c companies thrived, from luxury manufacturers like Jaguar and even daimler to other more affordable marques. This colourfully illustrated history tells the exciting story of the British sports car in the 1950s and '60s.
Book Synopsis The Car Lover's Guide to London by : Chris Randall
Download or read book The Car Lover's Guide to London written by Chris Randall and published by White Owl. This book was released on 2024-10-30 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are plenty of ways to delve into the history of a city like London, but it’s not often done through the world of the motor car. But that’s exactly what Chris Randall has done, exploring the links between the capital and its automotive past. That makes this book a somewhat unique approach to the subject, and readers will discover a fascinating history that involves some of the most famous names in motoring. Enthusiasts will certainly recognise the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley and Rolls-Royce but amongst those are names that might be less familiar today. The buildings that you’ll find within this book all exist today, which means you can see the motoring history for yourself. Some are now famous restaurants, others are offices and a few are private homes, but what they all have in common is the automobile and for those that love all things four-wheeled there are some real treasures to be found. Illustrated with photographs that show you what those places look like today, along with how some of them appeared in their motoring heyday, this is a very different look at the history of the famous city. It’s played a part in the very earliest days of the automobile’s story, and that’s something this books sets out to celebrate.
Download or read book Barn Find Road Trip written by Tom Cotter and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great collector cars are still out there--just waiting to be found! Sadly, there is very little reality in reality TV. That wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that these shows are the only TV shows for the barn-find collector car aficionado. Barn Find Road Trip is the antidote to all the manufactured collector "reality" shows. It's a real-world, barn-find banzai run in which auto archaeologist Tom Cotter, his car collector pal Brian Barr, and photographer Michael Alan Ross embarked on a 14-day collector-car-seeking adventure with no predetermined destinations. It's barn-find freestyle! Roaming the Southeast, they documented their day-to-day car search in photos and through stories and interviews. This trip is absolutely real and the same kind of junket any gearhead with the skills, knowledge, and time can undertake. Cotter and company hit the road in Cotter's 1939 Ford Woody, the kind of car that opened doors and started the conversations that revealed where interesting cars were squirreled away. The result? The discovery of over 1,000 collector cars and some of the most amazing barn-find stories Cotter has yet unearthed, all accompanied by Ross' evocative photography. If you love stories of automotive adventure, this is the book for you!
