Book excerpt: It was meant that each prayer contained something special. With attention, the reader will immediately notice this, despite the apparently similarity of prayer turns of speech. But for someone to whom other prayers seem the same, it should not be boring to read them, just as it is not boring for a lover to pray to repeat an uncountable number of times: "Lord, have mercy" or: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner." We accompany this Psalter with a sincere desire, so that everyone who opens it will always find in it what is necessary for themselves according to the state of their spirit: now enlightenment, now contrition, now inspiration, now consolation. Through the prayers of our holy father Ephraim the Syrian, may the Lord grant this to all of us!

Book Synopsis Praying the Psalms in Christ by : Laurence Kriegshauser O.S.B.
Download or read book Praying the Psalms in Christ written by Laurence Kriegshauser O.S.B. and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2009-03-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written centuries before Christ, the Psalms of the Hebrew Bible have been prayed by Christians since the founding of the Church. The early church fathers expounded the psalms in the light of the mystery of Christ, his death and resurrection, and his saving redemption. In this book, a Benedictine monk examines the Christian praying of the Psalms, taking into account modern and contemporary research on the Psalms. Working from the Hebrew text, Fr. Laurence Kriegshauser offers a verse-by-verse commentary on each of the one hundred and fifty psalms, highlighting poetic features such as imagery, rhythm, structure, and vocabulary, as well as theological and spiritual dimensions and the relation of psalms to each other in the smaller collections that make up the whole. The book attempts to integrate modern scholarship on the Psalms with the act of prayer and help Christians pray the psalms with greater understanding of their Christological meaning. The book contains an introduction, a glossary of terms, an index of topics, a table of English renderings of selected Hebrew words, and an index of biblical citations. Praying the Psalms in Christ will be welcomed by students of theology and liturgy, by priests, religious, and laypeople who pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and by all Christians who seek to pray the Psalms with greater profit and fervor.

Book Synopsis Hymns on Paradise by : Saint Ephraem (Syrus)
Download or read book Hymns on Paradise written by Saint Ephraem (Syrus) and published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Ephrem the Syrian's cycle of fifteen hymns on paradise offers a fine example of Christian poetry, in which the author weaves a profound theological synthesis around a particular Biblical narrative. Centered on Genesis 2 and 3, he expresses his awareness of the sacramental character of the created world, and of the potential of everything in the created world to act as a witness and pointer to the creator. God's two witnesses, says Ephrem, are: 'Nature, through man's use of it, [and] Scripture, through his reading it." In his writing, Ephrem posits an inherent link between the material and spiritual worlds. St Ephrem's mode of theological discussion is essentially Biblical and Semitic in character. He uses types and symbols to express connections or relationships to 'reveal' something that is otherwise 'hidden,' particularly expressing meanings between the Old Testament and the New, between this world and the heavenly, between the New Testament and the sacraments, and between the sacraments and the eschaton. His theology is not tied to a particular cultural or philosophical background, but operates by means of imagery and symbolism basic to all human experience.
