Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins of a Southern Mosaic explores the distinct, individual, and separate states that made up the colonial South. This volume contains four expanded lectures delivered in 1974 by Clarence L. Ver Steeg, professor of history at Northwestern University, as part of the annual Lamar Memorial Lectures at Mercer University. These lectures offer insight into the unique political and social backgrounds of Georgia and the Carolinas and the ways in which the individual backgrounds of these states come together to form a “quilt-like mosaic,” with identifiable enclaves that contribute a special quality to the whole. The Georgia Open History Library has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this collection, do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like Trotsky, I did not leave home with the proverbial one-and-six in my pocket. I come from a family of landed gentry . . . [and] could have chosen the path of comfort and safety, for even in apartheid South Africa, there is still that path for those who will collaborate. But I chose the path of struggle and uncertainty."--from the Preface Born into the small social elite of black South Africa, Phyllis Ntantala did not face the grinding poverty so familiar to other South African blacks. Instead, her struggle was that of a creative, articulate woman seeking fulfillment and justice in a land that tried to deny her both. The widow of Xhosa writer and historian A.C. Jordan and mother of African National Congress leader Z. Pallo Jordan, she and her family experienced a period of tremendous change in South Africa and also in the United States, where they moved during the 1960s. She discovers similarities in the two countries, including the arrogance of power. Anchored in history and culture, A Life's Mosaic sharply reveals the world and the people of South Africa. As the story of a political exile, it represents the dislocations that have caused universal suffering in the second half of the twentieth century. Phyllis Ntantala discusses the cruelty of racism, the cynicism of political solutions, and the hopes of those who live in both a world of exile and a world of dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the important, mainly Roman, buildings at the east end of the Corinthian Agora; the Julian Basilica and the Southeast Building, the South Basilica (immediately behind the South Stoa), and the Mosaic House adjoining it. The Southeast Building is described first in its present state, and then as it must have looked in its two main periods of use, soon after 44 B.C. and in the second quarter of the 1st century A.D. It was probably known in ancient times as the Tabularium or Library of Corinth. The adjoining Julian Basilica was, with the South Basilica, built about A.D. 40; the interior colonnades of both were rebuilt in marble in the Hadrianic period. These basilicas have a cryptoporticus on the ground floor and on the main floor an interior colonnade supporting a clerestory and three exedras. Detailed descriptions of each building are followed by a reconstruction of the pair and by a comparative discussion of floor plans. Finally, the Mosaic House is discussed and analysis of the mosaics date it about 200 A.D.

Gerardo Marti shows us how this unusual church has achieved multiethnicity, not by targeting specific groups, but by providing multiple havens of inclusion that play down ethnic differences. He reveals a congregation aiming to reconstruct evangelical theology, personal identity, member involvement, and church governance to create an institution with greater relevance to the social reality of a new generation.

Book excerpt: Carrying forward the legacy of original author Terry Jordan-Bychkov, Mona Domosh and new coauthors Roderick Neumann and Patricia Price offer this thoroughly updated new edition of the acclaimed introduction to the cultural geography of the world today. The result is a text that maintains its original distinctive style while addressing contemporary issues and situations that students care about, most importantly, the continuing phenomenon of globalization. The Thematic Approach of The Human Mosaic The Human Mosaic introduces five themes in the opening chapter--culture region, cultural diffusion, cultural ecology, cultural interaction, and cultural landscape--then uses those themes as a framework for the topical chapters that follow. Each theme is applied to a variety of geographical topics: demography, agriculture, the city, religion, language, ethnicity, politics, industry, folk and popular culture. Through this organization, students are able to relate to the most important aspects of cultural geography at every point in the text.

Book excerpt: Illustrated in color throughout, this handsome volume presents selected papers from an international symposium held in June 2001 marking the completion of a ten-year project to conserve the Last Judgment mosaic, at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The project was a partnership between the Office of the President of the Czech Republic, the Prague Castle Administration, and the Getty Conservation Institute. The goal of the symposium was to present the methodology, research, and results of the project, which involved conserving one of the finest examples of monumental medieval mosaic art in Europe. The volume's essays are divided into three parts, which cover the historical and art-historical context, conservation planning and methodology, and project implementation and maintenance. Topics addressed include the history, iconography, and visual documentation of the mosaic; the development and application of surface cleaning and protective coating techniques for the mosaic's glass tesserae; and post-treatment monitoring and maintenance.
