Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with roots of Indian geographical thoughts with reference to its historical base, cultural context and visionary message. As a consequence of long cultural history the resultant lifeworld in India converges like a drama and dance of space-time function with transference and transformation. In the passage of time emerged a metaphysical frame of thought, the varieties of heritagescapes, and simultaneously grown the senses to heritage ecology. Of course, attempts have been scanty but the richness always portrayed in literature and literary geography. Historical and cultural geographies in India have not caught that much attention in the academia; however on micro-level distinct attributes are interpreted in the recent literature. Going back to the ancient notions of nature theology, religioscapes and rituals have developed a complex network of belief systems in the Hindu traditions. In these traditions the motherly river Ganga serves as symbol, system and metaphor in the Indian culture. Continuity of cultural manifestations is actively maintained and continued in the Indian villages, where lives three-fourths of India’s population, and serve like a ‘place ballet’. India’s catastrophic march on the road of development and technology is entangled with obstacles and socio-spatial gaps that need to be re-considered in the light of cultural background and historical legacy. All these issues are examined, emphasising dualistic and complimentary perspectives in the West and the East. Download or read book A Source-book of Indian Archaeology: Settlements, technology and trade written by Frank Raymond Allchin and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous B/w Illustrations & Maps Description: The articles selected for this anthology are meant to act as a guide to the changing ramifications and some major foci of Indian archaeology up to the mid-eighties. The subsequent publications are still too close to us for a clear historical assessment. Although published some eighteen years later than the first volume, compiled with the same intention this is a definitive 'source-book' in its own right and will further help people to turn to some major studies which have become over the years difficult of access. Like archaeology elsewhere, Indian archaeology too is getting increasingly complex and perhaps polarized. In a sense the articles incorporated in the present volume serve as a reminder of some of the issues which confronted Indian archaeology before the current phase of complexity and politicization. The relevant literature, right from the beginning of Indian archaeological studies, was carefully scrutinized in its entirety before the present volume was compiled.

Book Synopsis An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology by : Amalananda Ghosh
Download or read book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology written by Amalananda Ghosh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1990 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology" is a significant reference work on archaeology in India. It is an authoritative work of permanent value in which the knowledge and expertise of Indian archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India, universities and other institutes have been pooled together under the editorship of the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The "Encyclopaedia" has been planned in an ambitious manner; it is not merely an alphabetical listing of entries with sketchy information on topics. Volume 1, which deals with certain broad subjects relating to Indian Archaeology, is divided into twenty chapters, alphabetically arranged. Each chapter is further divided into sections and subsections containing independent and self-contained essays. For example, in the chapter on "Cultures," detailed information can be found on various cultures in India; the chapter on "Basis of dating" contains articles on archaeological dating, archaeomagnetic dating, 14C radio-carbon dating, numismatic dating, palaeographic and epigraphic dating, thermoluminescent dating, etc. For those interested in getting further information on the subjects and in looking into the original sources and references, each entry also carries an exhaustive bibliography. Volume II is the Gazetteer. It contains basic data and information on all the explored and excavated sites in India along with reference to published reports and/or notices on each.

It provides a theoretical framework to understand these processes, and offers illustrative case studies in which the agency of ancient peoples, rather than the desires of antiquarians and archaeologists, is brought to the fore.

Book Synopsis Source Book of Indian Archaeology by : F. Raymond Allchin
Download or read book Source Book of Indian Archaeology written by F. Raymond Allchin and published by . This book was released on 1979-01-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 31 B/w Illustrations and 9 Maps Description: This is the first of a projected three volumes. It has been compiled with two aims: (1) to indicate the development of archaeological research in India and the emergence of a specifically Indian approach to archaeology and prehistory; (2) and to provide a source-book for students both in India and outside, which will give a selection and excerpts from the significant writings on Indian archaeology to date. As many of the articles are from widely scattered sources and consequently difficult to obtain, it is hoped that students will find the selection useful. The basic themes of this volume are: the background to Indian archaeology, including some of the earliest and most important writings, some examples of the early methods employed; and sections on the relevance of geography and climate for early man, and the cultures of early man himself; finally there is a section on the domestication of plants and animals. The selection is based on careful research and planning and without doubt this is the first work of its kind in Indian archaeology.
Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Ancient Indian Cities by : Dilip K. Chakrabarti
Download or read book The Archaeology of Ancient Indian Cities written by Dilip K. Chakrabarti and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a definitive archaeological perspective on the history of early urban growth in India. It does this by looking at both the protohistoric and the early historic periods, coming down to about AD 300 and later. Geographically, it covers all the major areas of the subcontinent. The existing archaeological data have been synthesized to yield a comprehensive picture of the morphology of ancient sites and their place within what is currently known of their settlement perspectives. This book addresses itself to some of the cardinal issues of South Asian archaeology - the origin and decline of the Indus civilization; the issue of its merger in the main flow of India's later cultural development; the archaeological basis of its long chronology; aspects of Indus urbanism; the reasons for the growth of neolithic-chalcolithic inner India; and the patterns and problems of urban growth in the early historic period on the subcontinental scale. In each case the author's concern is with understanding the situation at the grassroots level within an essentially South Asian framework. The hypotheses offered in this book should lead to some major rethinking about the story of archaeological development in the subcontinent.
