Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author Bill Little introduces the reader to the seven divisions of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Sonora and Baja California, and then takes you on a tour to discover desert plants from Nogales to Kino Bay with side trips to Puerto Libertad and Tastiota - all in the state of Sonora. Along the way you'll see the weird, the exotic, the rare, and many other beautiful plants of this unique piece of the Sonoran Desert. Written in an easy-to-understand manner, the Sonoran Desert Scrapbook has close-up and general view color photos for each plant, a complete description, including flowering time, and a location where each plant can be seen. Sonora is also the ancient homeland of the Seri Indians, and this book covers the ethnobotany and supernatural beliefs of the Seri for many of the plants they used. The detail and photography in this book will be enjoyed by tourists as well as the more serious native plant enthusiast. William J. Little has a degree in Forest-Range Management from Colorado State University. During a thirty year career with the U.S. Forest Service, he worked in Oregon, Idaho, and Utah, serving as either a forester, forest ranger, or range specialist. After retiring from the Forest Service, he was a range and environmental consultant. Bill has now turned his attention to one of the more fascinating desert areas of the world and has spent the past fifteen years roaming the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Sonora, and Baja California to study and photograph its unique variety of plants. The result is this guide to some of the most interesting and unusual plants found in the deserts lining the Sea of Cortes near Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico.

Book excerpt: Reading is all about understanding. How do we know our kids are getting it—and what do we do when they don't get it? Authors Juli Kendall and Outey Khuon believe that small group comprehension lessons have a key role to play in advancing students' understanding of texts. Making Sense: Small-Group Comprehension Lessons for English Language Learners , they provide answers to many common questions asked by teachers of ELL. It is an easy-to-use, practical resource for ELD, ESL, and ESOL teachers. The book's five main sections are geared to the stages of language proficiency, and lessons span kindergarten through grade 8. The authors outline 52 lessons that teach students how to make connections, visualize, infer, and determine importance. Each lesson follows a four-part teaching framework: Start Up/Connection: Helping students build background and use prior knowledge to connect to the lesson Give Information : Explicitly telling students what they are going to learn and why they are learning it Active Involvement : Students practice what they are learning while the teacher monitors and adjusts instruction accordingly Off-You-Go!: Opportunities for students to practice what they learned with peers or independently. Making Sense will appeal to experienced teachers seeking to expand their repertoire of lessons, as well as new teachers just beginning the adventure of teaching comprehension to English language learners.

Book excerpt: Writing is all about making meaning. The prospect of teaching writing to a classroom full of students—some who speak English and some who don't, can be overwhelming. When students learning English are at different levels, the task is even more challenging. Writing Sense: Integrated Reading and Writing Lessons for English Language Learners outlines the classroom conditions necessary for successful writing instruction with English language learners, whether in writing workshop and/or small-group instruction. It includes 68 classroom-tested lessons for grades K 8 that show kids at all levels of language acquisition how to make connections, ask questions, visualize (make mental images), infer, determine importance, synthesize, monitor meaning and comprehension, and use fix-up strategies. The five main sections are geared to the stages of language proficiency, and lessons are divided into younger and older students, spanning kindergarten through to grade eight. There are extensive lists of suggested books for mentor texts as well as lists of mentor authors to facilitate teachers' planning and instruction.

Book excerpt: Since 1952, Bill Carr and Arthur Pack, the founders of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, have inspired visitors to live in harmony with the natural world by fostering love, appreciation, and understanding of the Sonoran Desert. When the museum opened it had only four employees. Today it has more than 100 paid employees, nearly 200 docents, and close to 300 volunteers. About 85 percent of the museum is outside, where visitors can enjoy native and the endangered animals exhibited in award-winning naturalistic habitat enclosures, an innovation in exhibitory developed by the museum. Most visitors spend between two and three hours touring the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, but as the museum continues to grow, it is becoming harder and harder to see it all in such a short amount of time. Visitors should plan to come early and stay late!

Book excerpt: HIDDEN LIFE OF THE DESERT: And Our Future in the Drying Southwest is a greatly expanded, 120-page 2022/Third Edition, co-published by Wild Horizons and Mountain Press. Part 2 offers an up-to-date, well-researched, thought-provoking, non-technical synthesis of ideas for a future based on “desert thinking for desert living.” In the context of explosive population growth and climate change, consider outdated laws that govern land and water use in the Southwest, how water and energy are connected, pros and cons of desalination, crops suitable for arid lands, agri-solar studies, solar canals, rainwater harvesting, ASU’s exciting new project with “mechanical trees” that collect CO2 from the atmosphere, and more. This book is packed with useful information for students, teachers, and parents. As in his 2nd Edition (2010) of HIDDEN LIFE, Author-Photographer Thomas Wiewandt brightens every page of Part 1 with stunning color photographs of plants and animals that thrive in seemingly barren landscapes of the Sonoran Desert. This book has also served as an educational companion to his award-winning film DESERT DREAMS: Celebrating Five Seasons in the Sonoran Desert, a popular film with no narration that has aired as a pledge drive program on national Public Television since 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America's most distinguished poets now shares his fascination with a distinctive corner of our country. Richard Shelton first came to southeastern Arizona in the 1950s as a soldier stationed at Fort Huachuca. He soon fell in love with the region and upon his discharge found a job as a schoolteacher in nearby Bisbee. Now a university professor and respected poet living in Tucson, still in love with the Southwestern deserts, Shelton sets off for Bisbee on a not-uncommon day trip. Along the way, he reflects on the history of the area, on the beauty of the landscape, and on his own life. Couched within the narrative of his journey are passages revealing Shelton's deep familiarity with the region's natural and human history. Whether conveying the mystique of tarantulas or describing the mountain-studded topography, he brings a poet's eye to this seemingly desolate country. His observations on human habitation touch on Tombstone, "the town too tough to die," on ghost towns that perhaps weren't as tough, and on Bisbee itself, a once prosperous mining town now an outpost for the arts and a destination for tourists. What he finds there is both a broad view of his past and a glimpse of that city's possible future. Going Back to Bisbee explores a part of America with which many readers may not be familiar. A rich store of information embedded in splendid prose, it shows that there are more than miles on the road to Bisbee.
