If it does so appear, that is not because I could not easily have done otherwise, but it is part of an effort to create the atmosphere of war, for there are so many jagged edges there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Temporary Gentleman in France: Home Letters From an Officer at the Front I know there are very many thousands of them who are just like this particular Temporary Gentleman, - even as there must be many thousands of his like in America, -because there have been so many among those with whom I have lived and worked and fought, in the trenches. And it does seem to me, after study of the letters, that this statement forms something of a tribute to the spirit, the efficiency, and the devotion to their duty, of the whole tribe of the Temporary Officers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. He intends to accentuate what most of them already know, not to teach them any new thing. And if he appear to touch too much upon the trifles of life, it is because experience shows that it is the small things of our daily intercourse with our fellow-beings which make the difference between success and failure. He gratefully acknowledges his obligation to the Reverend editor of the/1715 Maria for permis sion to use in the last part of this volume several of the Chats with Good Listeners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, Vol. 2 But there is something which I cannot so easily pass over; he is pleased to upbraid me with my age; as if it had been in my power to stop the career of Time. Then he tells me of the loss of one of my hands, as if that maim had been got in a quarrel in some tavern, and not upon the most memorable occasion that either past or present ages have beheld, and which, perhaps, futurity will never parallel. If my wounds do not redound to my honour in the thoughts of some of those that look upon them, they will at least secure me the esteem of those that know how they were gotten. A soldier makes a nobler figure as he lies dead in battle, than safe in flight and I am so far from being ashamed of the loss of my hand, that were it possible to recall the same opportunity, I should think my wounds but a small price for sharing in that prodigious action. The scars in a soldier's face and breast are the stars that by a laudable imitation guide others to the port of honour and glory. Besides, it is not the grey hairs, but the understanding of a man, that may be said to write; and years are wont to improve the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gentlemen at Arms These stories, with the exception of the two chapters entitled The Husbandmen, are all based on the ex periences of the writer when serving in France and else where, or on those of fellow - officers with whom he has been brought into contact. The writer makes no claims and possesses none - to be considered a writer of fiction. Several of these stories deal with the battle of Mons, the Marne, the Aisne, Ypres, and the Somme; in each of these cases an attempt has been made to describe things as they actually occurred, though the art of camouflage has been practised to the extent of disguising the names of the characters and units concerned. Other and more strategical pens have described these mighty battles viewed at leisure as examples of the art of war; the writer has limited himself to describing them as they presented themselves in glimpses to the eyes of men who, being engaged in fighting them, had no time to speculate about them. The particular phases recorded in these pages are here made public for the first time; some day they will doubtless receive more orderly treatment in the records of certain West-country regiments and the his tory of two batteries of artillery. For the truth of the story called No Man's Land the author does not vouch; it is sufficient to say that it is based on a.
