Book excerpt: A two-dimensional MHD free convection heat and mass transfer flow of viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid past a vertical flat plate embedded in porous medium in the presence of hall current under the influence of uniform magnetic field applied normal to the flow is studied analytically. In this research work, we make the governing equations dimensionless by usual non-dimensional variables and we obtained a set of ordinary differential equations. Then these obtained ordinary differential equations are solved analytically by using perturbation technique. The expressions for velocity field, temperature distribution, concentration field, skin friction, the rate of heat transfer and the rate of mass transfer are derived. Finally the results are discussed in detailed with the help of graphs and tables to observe the effect of different parameters like Magnetic parameter (M), radiation parameter (F), Grashof number (Gr), modified Grashof number (Gm), Prandtl number (Pr), permeability parameter (k), Eckert number (Ec) and the chemical reaction parameter (Kc).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of heat and mass transfer processes by means of external force effects is one of the most important problems in modern applied physics. This book is devoted to the study of the magnetic field effect as it bears on transfer phenomena: heat and mass transfer. In conducting media, this influence is mainly due to the induced electric current and the interaction of the current with the magnetic field, whereas in magnetizable fluids, molecular or colloidal solution, transfer phenomena are directly affected by the field. When analysing heat and mass transfer in multiphase magnetizing media, only those phenomena which could be described in terms of conventional quasi-stationary approximation are considered. The effects assoicated with the non-equilibrium magnetization of the system and particle interaction receive special attention here. The problem studied here have been considered with a view to possible applications, particularly in biology and medicine.

Book excerpt: This book presents a theoretical analysis of several problems in thermal and solutal convections in magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows. It provides a systemic discussion on the development of fluid dynamics, continuum hypothesis, Newton’s law of viscosity, heat transfer, mass transfer, thermal diffusion, diffusion-thermo-MHD, gray and non-gray gases, Fourier’s law of conduction, and Fick’s law of diffusion in such a way that readers with little knowledge in physics will find it easier to understand the contents. Some physical principles, such as those governing fluid motion, fluid temperature, and fluid concentration, are presented in vector form, allowing the corresponding form to be derived in any orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Laplace transform technique in closed form is used to obtain exact solutions to unsteady one-dimensional flow problems, an implicit finite difference method of Crank–Nicholson type is used to solve unsteady two-dimensional flow problems, and an asymptotic series expansion method is used to solve the governing equations of the steady three-dimensional flow problem analytically. Flow and transport phenomena are thoroughly treated in each chapter separately. This book emphasizes the influence of an induced magnetic field. The outcomes of the works are graphically depicted so that readers can gain a tangible understanding of the problems. It also includes a list of inverse Laplace transforms (ILTs) for several specific functions, some of which are not found in the existing literature. The ILTs of special functions are given in brief form and can further be utilized as standard formulae in finding those as special cases. Some new special functions are introduced in the book, along with appropriate definitions. As a result, the formulations for velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number have been appeared in brief and convenient forms that are uncommon in other literature. This book addresses numerous areas of contemporary magneto-fluid dynamics research that have major implications in engineering. It is primarily intended for researchers working in the field of heat and mass transfer in hydromagnetic flows.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of the book is to provide basic idea on fluid dynamics and its related properties and help to understand research work in the field of transport phenomena in MHD flow. The fluid model describing various aspects of boundary layer flow past a vertical flat surface embedded in Darcian porous media have been studied. An asymptotic periodic transformation is used to solve the dynamical equations. The influence of several physical effects like thermal radiation, chemical reaction, magnetic field, radiation absorption, heat sink etc. have been considered on various fluid properties. In this study some significant engineering properties of interest such as skin-friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also calculated and analyzed through graphs and tables. It is expected that, the governed exact closed form of solutions corresponding to different problems can be used for validating numerical treatment of certain critical flows with heat and mass transfer phenomena.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Mathematics - Applied Mathematics, , language: English, abstract: The unsteady free convection and mass transfer boundary layer flow past an accelerated infinite vertical porous plate by taking into account the viscous dissipation is considered when the plate accelerates in its own plane. The dimensionless momentum, energy and concentration equation in the presence of uniform transverse magnetic field has been solved analytically by perturbation technique. The usual similar transformations are applied to the steady momentum, energy and concentration equations and we obtained a set of ordinary differential equations. Then the solutions of the problem of the ordinary differential equations are obtained by using perturbation technique. The expression for velocity field, temperature field, concentration field, skin friction, Nusselt number (Nu) and Sherwood number (Sh) has been found. The results are discussed in detailed with the help of graphs to observe the effect of different parameters.

The variations in velocity, temperature and concentration under the effect of these rheological parameters have been studied and discussed with the help of graphs and tables. Also, the influences of some important parameters on Nusselt number, Sherwood number and skin friction are analyzed. The basic concepts of MHD, heat and mass transfer along with governing equations associated with energy, conservation of momentum, conservation of mass and molecular diffusion are presented in the chapter First. This chapter also explains fundamental concepts and their importance such as viscosity, pressure, density, heat absorption/generation, Hall current effect, porous medium, boundary layer theory, etc. The parameters like magnetic parameter, Grashof number, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also elucidated. The second chapter presents the l

Book excerpt: This book presents recent developments in our systematic studies of hydrodynamics and heat and mass transfer in laminar free convection, accelerating film boiling and condensation of Newtonian fluids, as well as accelerating film flow of non-Newtonian power-law fluids (FFNF). These new developments provided in this book are (i) novel system of analysis models based on the developed New Similarity Analysis Method; (ii) a system of advanced methods for treatment of gas temperature- dependent physical properties, and liquid temperature- dependent physical properties; (iii) the organically combined models of the governing mathematical models with those on treatment model of variable physical properties; (iv) rigorous approach of overcoming a challenge on accurate solution of three-point boundary value problem related to two-phase film boiling and condensation; and (v) A pseudo-similarity method of dealing with thermal boundary layer of FFNF for greatly simplifies the heat-transfer analysis and numerical calculation. A system of practical application equations on heat and mass transfer are provided in each chapter, which are formulated based on the rigorous numerical solutions with consideration of variable physical properties. In addition, in the second edition, other new research developments are further included on resolving an even big challenge associated with investigations of laminar free film condensation of vapour-gas mixture. They involve the novel methods for treatment of concentration- and temperature- dependent physical properties of vapour-gas mixture, and for rigorous solution of interfacial vapour saturation temperature, which have lead to rigorous analysis and calculation results on two-phase film flow velocity, temperature, and concentration fields, as well as condensate heat and mass transfer.
