Book Synopsis Alexey Yermolov's Memoirs by : Alexander Mikaberidze
Download or read book Alexey Yermolov's Memoirs written by Alexander Mikaberidze and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yermolov is a legend in Russia. A man who rose from obscurity to command armies and conquer provinces, he was the epitome of a military man of action. To his enemies he was a byword for brutality, but, to his homeland, a hero. His memoirs are as dramatic as his rise to fame and fortune. Disgraced and exiled by Emperor Paul he was brought back into service only to witness Russian defeat at the battle of Austerlitz in 1805. Honoured and advanced by his new patron, the dashing Emperor Alexander, Yermolov then made rapid progress. He witnessed firsthand Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 and went on to see revenge completed when the Russians marched into Paris in April 1814. Yermolov was a talented general who captured the spirit of his times in his engaging memoirs. His acidic wit, acute powers of observation and grasp of drama make his memoirs stand out as a unique source on the Napoleonic Wars.
Book Synopsis The A to Z of Moldova by : Andrei Brezianu
Download or read book The A to Z of Moldova written by Andrei Brezianu and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Moldova claims a European lineage reaching back in time long before its 14th century accession to statehood. In the 15th century, it managed against all odds to avoid being conquered by Islam and-albeit an intermittent vassal after 1485-it maintained its autonomy and was never turned into a province of the Ottoman Empire. After this period, however, Moldova would not be so fortunate, as it altered between Russian, Romanian, and Soviet control until it finally gained its independence in 1991 from the Soviet Union. The A to Z of Moldova, through its chronology, introduction, appendixes, maps, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects, traces the history of this small, but densely populated country, providing a compass for the direction it is heading.

Book Synopsis The Modernisation of Russia, 1676-1825 by : Simon Dixon
Download or read book The Modernisation of Russia, 1676-1825 written by Simon Dixon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-07-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to place Russia's 'long' eighteenth century squarely in its European context. The conceptual framework is set out in an opening critique of modernisation which, while rejecting its linear implications, maintains its focus on the relationship between government, economy and society. Following a chronological introduction, a series of thematic chapters (covering topics such as finance and taxation, society, government and politics, culture, ideology, and economy) emphasise the ways in which Russia's international ambitions as an emerging great power provoked administrative and fiscal reforms with wide-ranging (and often unanticipated) social consequences. This thematic analysis allows Simon Dixon to demonstrate that the more the tsars tried to modernise their state, the more backward their empire became. A chronology and critical bibliography are also provided to allow students to discover more about this colourful period of Russian history.

Book Synopsis The Grand Strategy of the Russian Empire, 1650-1831 by : John P. LeDonne
Download or read book The Grand Strategy of the Russian Empire, 1650-1831 written by John P. LeDonne and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its height, the Russian empire covered eleven time zones and stretched from Scandinavia to the Pacific Ocean. Arguing against the traditional historical view that Russia, surrounded and threatened by enemies, was always on the defensive, John P. LeDonne contends that Russia developed a long-term strategy not in response to immediate threats but in line with its own expansionist urges to control the Eurasian Heartland. LeDonne narrates how the government from Moscow and Petersburg expanded the empire by deploying its army as well as by extending its patronage to frontier societies in return for their serving the interests of the empire. He considers three theaters on which the Russians expanded: the Western (Baltic, Germany, Poland); the Southern (Ottoman and Persian Empires); and the Eastern (China, Siberia, Central Asia). In his analysis of military power, he weighs the role of geography and locale, as well as economic issues, in the evolution of a larger imperial strategy. Rather than viewing Russia as peripheral to European Great Power politics, LeDonne makes a powerful case for Russia as an expansionist, militaristic, and authoritarian regime that challenged the great states and empires of its time.

Book Synopsis Napoleon Absent, Coalition Ascendant by : Carl von Clausewitz
Download or read book Napoleon Absent, Coalition Ascendant written by Carl von Clausewitz and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831) is best known for his masterpiece of military theory On War, yet that work formed only the first three of his ten-volume published writings. The others, historical analyses of the wars that roiled Europe from 1789 through 1815, informed and shaped Clausewitz’s military thought, so they offer invaluable insight into his dialectical, often difficult theoretical masterwork. Among these historical works, one of the most important is Der Feldzug von 1799 in Italien und der Schweiz, which covers an important phase of the French Revolutionary Wars. Napoleon Absent, Coalition Ascendant covers the period of Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt and focuses on the Second Coalition’s campaign in Italy and their victories under Suvorov’s dynamic leadership that carried the tide of battle up against the French frontier Moving from strategy to battle scene to analysis, this first English translation of volume 5 of Clausewitz’s collected works nimbly conveys the character of Clausewitz’s writing in all its registers: the brisk, often powerful description of events as they unfolded and the critical reflections on strategic theory and its implications. Napoleon Absent, Coalition Ascendant includes the major battles of Trebbia and Novi and will expand readers’ experience and understanding of not only this critical moment in European history but also the thought and writings of the modern master of military philosophy.
