Book excerpt: This volume launches the book series of “Inquire – International Centre for Research on Inquisitions” of the University of Bologna, a research network that engages with the history of religious justice from the 13th to the 20th century. This first publication offers twenty chapters that take stock of the current historiography on medieval and early modern Inquisitions (the Spanish, Portuguese and Roman Inquisitions) and their modern continuations. Through the analysis of specific questions related to religious repression in Europe and the Iberian colonial territories extending from the Middle Ages to today, the contributions here examine the history of the perception of tribunals and the most recent historiographical trends. New research perspectives thus emerge on a subject that continues to intrigue those interested in the practices of justice and censorship, the history of religious dissent and the genesis of intolerance in the Western world and beyond.

Book excerpt: This is a study of the history and function of the highest ecclesiastical tribunal, the Sacra Romana Rota, from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries. Despite its importance for Christendom and in contrast with other important papal offices, the activity of the Rota has never been thoroughly investigated on the basis of archival sources, in large part due to the vast source material and the perceived "difficulty" of the subject. This book fills this significant gap by explaining how the Rota functioned-its organization, the phases of a Rota process, everyday practices at the tribunal-and the kinds of issues it handled, where the processes originated from and how long they lasted. The study demonstrates that the Rota dealt with a range of cases much broader than has previously been acknowledged, whilst also confirming that the tribunal mainly oversaw litigation over benefices. The results of this research reveal the true role of the Rota and its significance for Christians from the middle ages to the dawn of the Reformation.

Book excerpt: This book is one woman's report from the front lines of digital dating. Grace Anderson, a novelist with grown children, an ex-husband, an age beginning with the number "4" and an acute case of writer's block, turns to cyberspace for diversion/inspiration. She finds it in the form of a bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished man she meets in a chat room late one evening. The two of them begin to build a relationship the old-fashioned way - with their words and their imaginations. When her cyberspace swain turns three-dimensional, the good news is that he is indeed bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished, and better yet, drop-dead handsome. The more, interesting news is that he is a Princeton University Wunderkind, twenty-eight years her junior--younger than both of Grace's sons. So, just what happens when the perfect love meets a most socially unacceptable age gap? The road to finding that out will captivate you. The storyline is timely... and the romance... timeless.

Book excerpt: Grace, following the death of her husband Hank, was forced to carry on with her life as best she could. Raising an inquisitive boy, Georgie, as a single mother and running the law firm and other endeavors that she and Hank had begun was a huge challenge that demanded all of her time. Jack, her half-brother, was helpful with Georgie but often added to her burdens when he became periodically unpredictable. As life moved on, she was able to balance all of this until she met two men. Adam, a ranch hand with an easy living style and smooth moves, and Jerry, a long-time supportive friend who hides his true feelings, both challenged her to introspection and the need to discover what sort of future she wished for herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Steve McVey’s books—beginning with the 225,000–selling Grace Walk—testifies to readers’ hunger to get free of performance–focused Christianity and rediscover the grace–filled, relational God of the Scriptures. The issue of God’s will confuses and frustrates many believers. Steve McVey helps and encourages them with key biblical principles: Focusing on rules, Christians end up anxious, hesitant, and distant from their compassionate Father. Focusing on God’s relationship with them, Christians will feel assured He is a Person to trust, not a formula to figure out. Believers can relax, knowing that God wants to guide them and has given them the life and mind of Christ. The result of the grace–based relationship? A bold, no–regrets life, lived in light of God’s complete dependability. This kind of life—the kind of life every Christian desires—is revealed in Walking in the Will of God.

This is my favourite Juliet Madison novel yet and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a sweet, character driven story.' - Sam Still Reading From Escape's queen of ro–magic comedy comes a sweet, emotional contemporary romance about the pleasures of making a wish and seeing it come true. When Dr Sylvia Greene makes an impromptu wish at the Tarrin's Bay Wishing Festival, it's the most out of character action she can think of. Hers is not a life of wishes. Hers is a controlled life of order, plans and preparation...of science and research and diagnosis and treatment. But her past has been weighing on her mind, and decisions made long ago have far–reaching consequences. A week later, the daughter she secretly gave up for adoption at sixteen arrives in Sylvia's small coastal town with secrets that can't be shared. Between feelings of guilt, gossip, and a growing attraction to an emotionally unavailable colleague, Sylvia's well–ordered life is soon thrown into chaos. She is no longer alone, and for the first time she feels as if her world is open to possibilities. They say be careful what you wish for, but, for Sylvia, the unexpected consequences may be just what the doctor ordered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A warm, spellbinding tale about a witch and the secrets her coven has been keeping from her, with echoes of the classic Hades and Persephone story, in the tradition of Practical Magic and Witch of Wild Things. Hecate Goodwin, Kate to her friends, has curated the perfect life as a hedge witch, living in a secluded cottage with only a black cat for company. She spends her days foraging herbs from the Ipswich forest, gardening, and creating tinctures to sell at the apothecary she owns. Most evenings pass without her speaking to another human being, an arrangement she quite prefers. Kate’s solitude is thrown into disarray when her older sister, Miranda, reaches out and asks her to host their coven’s annual Halloween gathering. The day marks the beginning of the new year for witches and is also Kate’s birthday. The pressure from her coven to make the evening memorable mounts as the event draws near. To complicate things further, a handsome man from Kate’s past turns up at her cottage, asking for sanctuary. It is Kate’s duty as a hedge witch to honor this request, much to her dismay. Matthew Cypher is no ordinary lost soul–he’s a practitioner of forbidden magic who’s tricked Kate once before, and her guard is up. As she juggles Matthew’s arrival and the preparations for Halloween, Kate comes across an old tome shrouded in dark magic. She is horrified when she realizes the blood-red inscription is written in familiar handwriting: her recently deceased mother’s. Afraid to even touch the dark magic her mother secretly studied, Kate can turn only to Matthew for help. Her idealized memory of her mother begins to distort, and as she and Matthew grow closer, Kate has to reevaluate whom she can really trust. A Dark and Secret Magic is a celebration of the Halloween season and a love letter to anyone who drinks pumpkin spice in August and carries the spirit of a witch inside their heart all year long.
