Unlike many 19th-century communal societies, Zoar did not discourage tourism and gawkers. As a result, there is an unusually rich photographic record of the community and its people as well as many descriptions and comments by writers who wished to share their impressions of this Old World town. Tourists snapped photos of themselves riding on haywagons, boating on Zoar Lake, and walking in the Zoar Separatists' symbolic garden. The Zoarites themselves got into the act as well, taking commercial photos of themselves and their town to be sold as postcards. She argues that women poets conceived of lyric as an intersubjective genre, one that seeks to establish relations between subjects rather than to constitute a subject in isolation. Moving away from canonical texts that contribute to the commonly held notion that lyric poetry is an utterance made in solitude, Harrington explores the work of Christina Rossetti, Augusta Webster, A. Mary F. Robinson, Alice Meynell, and Dollie Radford to show how nineteenth-century poetic conventions shaped and were shaped by concepts of intimacy. The purpose of a language is universal understand of what is said. In the case of the English language, make that what is said, how it is said, how it is written and even how it is pronounced. It is pointless for English-speaking people to wrongly interpret the intent of another of their kind or to answer in an equally obfuscating fashion. If I say something, I want to be universally understood in as clear a manner as possible!
