Book excerpt: We assessed whether the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) has been properly planned, deployed and managed. ERTMS is designed to replace the diverse railway signaling systems around Europe with a single system that enables trains to travel uninterrupted across different countries and facilitates rail competitiveness. We found that deployment so far is at a low level and represents a patchwork, despite the fact that the ERTMS concept to enhance interoperability is not generally questioned by the rail sector. Infrastructure managers and railway undertakings are reluctant to invest due to the expenses entailed and the lack of an individual business case (for example in the Member States with well performing national systems and significant remaining lifetime). EU funding can only cover a limited amount of the investments. We make a number of recommendations to the European Commission, the Member States and the European Union Agency for Railways to help improve the deployment and financing of the system.

Book Synopsis Intelligent Transportation Systems – Problems and Perspectives by : Aleksander Sładkowski
Download or read book Intelligent Transportation Systems – Problems and Perspectives written by Aleksander Sładkowski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a discussion of problems encountered in the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). It puts emphasis on the early tasks of designing and proofing the concept of integration of technologies in Intelligent Transport Systems. In its first part the book concentrates on the design problems of urban ITS. The second part of the book features case studies representative for the different modes of transport. These are freight transport, rail transport and aerospace transport encompassing also space stations. The book provides ideas for deployment which may be developed by scientists and engineers engaged in the design of Intelligent Transport Systems. It can also be used in the training of specialists, students and post-graduate students in universities and transport high schools.

Book excerpt: ERTMS 'European rail traffic management system') is a major industrial project being implemented by Europe, a project that will serve to make rail transport safer and more competitive. The fundamental objective of ERTMS is to develop and to deploy a single harmonised control, command, signalling and communication system that is fully interoperable across borders, that can be sourced from a broad supply base, and whose evolution is based on compatibility. ERTMS is the backbone for a digital railway system.
Book Synopsis Operating Rules and Interoperability in Trans-National High-Speed Rail by : Simon Collart-Dutilleul
Download or read book Operating Rules and Interoperability in Trans-National High-Speed Rail written by Simon Collart-Dutilleul and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the problem of interoperability related to operating rules and gives an overview of the formal method approaches related to this subject. The book examines the interoperability issues concerning implementation of European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) while crossing a boarder. It also looks at the implementing of the ERTMS and provides solutions regarding operating rules for ERTMS lines, using formal methods and simulation tools. The contributors will also discuss operating rule validation and formal methods for safety assessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of RAMS in Railway Systems: Theory and Practice addresses the complexity in today's railway systems, which use computers and electromechanical components to increase efficiency while ensuring a high level of safety. RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability) addresses the specifications and standards that manufacturers and operators have to meet. Modeling, implementation, and assessment of RAM and safety requires the integration of railway engineering systems; mathematical and statistical methods; standards compliance; and financial/economic factors. This Handbook brings together a group of experts to present RAM and safety in a modern, comprehensive manner.
Book Synopsis How Europe Shapes British Public Policy by : Morphet, Janice
Download or read book How Europe Shapes British Public Policy written by Morphet, Janice and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain's relationship with the European Union (EU) is frequently viewed as simple by the media and politicians. In ways - never really explained - the EU has managed to 'take away' Britain's sovereign powers and has the ability to determine much of its legislation. The history of how this has occurred is never discussed, unlike other countries in Europe. How Europe shapes British public policy examines the development of the EU as a sectarian issue in the UK. It discusses the effects of disengagement through the political practices of policy making and the implications that this has had for depoliticisation in government and the civil service. It considers the effects of EU membership in shaping key policy areas - trade and privatisation, the single market and the environment, and subsidiarity in the development and implementation of devolved and decentralised governance. This book gives new and essential insights for students and practitioners of politics, governance and international relations.
