Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision of the 1987 silvicultural guide (Leak et al. 1987) includes updated and expanded silvicultural information on northern hardwoods as well as additional information on wildlife habitat and the management of mixed-wood and northern hardwood-oak stands. The prescription methodology is simpler and more field-oriented. This guide also includes an appendix of familiar tables and charts useful to practicing field foresters. Northern hardwood forest types can be managed as even- or uneven-aged stands using a variety of silvicultural practices. In planning these practices, there are many factors to consider including access, species composition, desired regeneration, wildlife habitat needs and environmental concerns. The aim of this document is to provide guidelines to assist the manager in choosing the right methods to meet the landowner objectives consistent with stand conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2SIMSAP and SlMTlM are computer programs that have been developed to simulate the stand growth and development of natural and treated even-aged northern hardwood stands. SIMSAP begins with species distributions by quality classes in sapling stands after regeneration. SIMTIM, the poletimber-sawtimber-harvest phase, uses stocking guides based on quadratic mean stand diameter, number of trees, and basal area per acre of trees in the main crown canopy. Using available data, the connecting phases of the models have been tebted to determine the effects of silvicultural treatments (or no treatment) on long-term stand response. The models are coded in FORTRAN 77 and are available on mainframe and IBM compatible microcomputers with a minimum of 256 K.S3.

Book excerpt: S2Revegetation was studied during the first 10 years after clearcutting two sites in the northern hardwood forest of New Hampshire. One site was a 12-ha block clearcut; the other was a 36-ha progressive strip cut harvested in three phases. Permanent plots on each site were measured at 140 4-year intervals. Changes in the density and biomass of trees, shrubs, and herbs are presented with emphasis on the major commercial species and their primary noncommercial competitors. S3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of precommercial crop tree thinning was investigated by thinning crop trees of paper birch, yellow birch, and sugar maple to two intensity levels at 8 years of age. Analysis of covariance on post thinning growth measurements taken 7 years later indicated a significant increase in diameter and crown-diameter growth, with the pattern of response varying by species. The study suggests that a uniform crop-tree thinning treatment for a stand composed of species with varying tolerances will rarely produce the best response for all the species.

Both the establishment of new stands and the culture of existing stands are covered. Background information on paper birch silvics, silviculture, and management is followed with a set of prescriptions describing specific treatments to be applied for a range of stand conditions and management objectives. A limited amount of information is also provided on the management of paper birch stands for aesthetic and other purposes (fig 1).S3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.

Book excerpt: The current trend toward the establishment and care of forests for a wide combination of uses requires flexibility in forest culture and a knowledge of the silvicultural choices available to the resource manager. This publication summarizes the silvicultural systems that appear biologically feasible, on the basis of present knowledge, for each of 48 major forest types in the United States. Supporting information is given on the occurrence of the 48 forest types, the cultural requirements of the component species, and the biological factors that control the choice of silvicultural options.
