Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Parliament The idea of writing a short history of Parliament was first suggested to me by Mr. F. S. Pulling, of Exeter, who at one time I thought would have shared in the work. Circumstances, however, prevented this, and the book ultimately assumed a somewhat different form from that projected at first. The object with which it was written was the hope of imparting a certain amount of life to the dry bones which are strewn in the way of the constitutional student, and of combining instruction with a certain amount of amusement. Whether the effort has been successful or not the reader must judge for himself. I must here take the opportunity to render my acknowledgments to Mr. F. York Powell, Mr. C. H. Carmichael, and Mr. A. B. Beaven for the kind assistance which they have rendered me - especially the latter, who undertook the laborious task of revising the whole of the MS. dealing with the period after 1660. I am indebted to the kindness of Sir George Sitwell for a very early illustration of parliamentary corruption - an isolated evidence but sufficiently pregnant of meaning. Book Synopsis The Origins of the English Parliament, 924-1327 by : J. R. Maddicott
Download or read book The Origins of the English Parliament, 924-1327 written by J. R. Maddicott and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins of the English Parliament is a magisterial account of the evolution of parliament, from its earliest beginnings in the late Anglo-Saxon period. Starting with the national assemblies which began to meet in the reign of King Æthelstan, it carries the story through to the fully fledged parliament of lords and commons of the early fourteenth century, which came to be seen as representative of the whole nation and which eventually sanctioned the deposition of the king himself in 1327. Throughout, J. R. Maddicott emphasizes parliament's evolution as a continuous process, underpinned by some important common themes. Over the four hundred years covered by the book the chief business of the assembly was always the discussion of national affairs, together with other matters central to the running of the state, such as legislation and justice. It was always a resolutely political body. But its development was also shaped by a series of unforeseen events and episodes. Chief among these were the Norman Conquest, the wars of Richard I and John, and the minority of Henry III. A major turning-point was reached in 1215, when Magna Carta established the need for general consent to taxation - a vital step towards the establishment of parliament itself in the next generation. Covering an exceptionally long time span, The Origins of the English Parliament takes readers to the roots of the English state's central institution, showing how the more familiar parliament of late medieval and early modern England came into being and illuminating the close relationship between particular political episodes and the course of institutional change. Above all, it shows how the origins of parliament lie not in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, as has usually been argued, but in a much more distant past.

Book Synopsis Short History of Parliament, 1295-1642 (Classic Reprint) by : Faith Thompson
Download or read book Short History of Parliament, 1295-1642 (Classic Reprint) written by Faith Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of Parliament, 1295-1642 This little book is not a history of parliament in the usual sense. No attempt is made to discuss obscure points of origins nor to do justice to certain thorny questions upon which reputable historians still disagree. It does include the main facts to be found in standard constitutional texts, and some of the more technical data, figures, and dates are supplied in notes and appendices for those who want them. It is addressed to students of college age, and may serve as collateral reading for college courses in English history or literature. It is hoped that it may also have some value for a wider reading public, including those interested in parliamentary government wherever it may be found in the world today. The purpose is fivefold: (1) to make available the valuable results of recent research scattered through learned monographs, essays, and review articles; (2) to give something of the flavor and points of view of the eras concerned by some quotation from the contemporary sources; (3) to bridge the division, usually too sharply made, between "medieval" and "modern"; (4) to bring the "men of law" into the picture - the legal historian who illuminates the subject by a special approach and the man of law in parliament who made many a practical as well as theoretical contribution; (5) last but not least, to bring parliaments - even those of "medieval" times - and their members to life, to dramatize, as it were, their personnel and activities.
